DENTAL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NEW IU STUDENT OUTREACH
CLINIC
A small group of volunteer-minded fourth-year Indiana
University medical students saw their dreams for a student-run community clinic
come true in August, when they held the grand opening of the IU Student
Outreach Clinic, a near eastside healthcare facility that will provide free
urgent care to the needy.
The medical students decided to team up with IUs dental
students and others to broaden the scope of the clinic, which operate from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays at the Neighborhood Fellowship Church, 3102 E. 10th
Street. Also participating are Clarian Health and students from the med
schools Department of Public Health and Butler Universitys College of
Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Its the first clinic in Indiana that is fully
operated by students, with care given under the guidance of volunteer staff
doctors from IUSMs departments of family medicine, internal medicine, and
pediatrics.
Treatment is currently limited to urgent medical care and
medical screenings. Initially, the dental school will be providing dental
supplies and patient education, although the students hope to eventually
include dental screenings and more advanced care.
Dentistry faculty and students participating in the
grand opening included Dr. Jeffrey Dean, executive associate dean; Dr. Lawrence
Garetto, associate dean for Dental Education; Dr. Timothy Carlson, Restorative
Dentistry; Prof. Melinda Meadows and Dr. Joan Kowolik, Pediatric Dentistry; D4
students Ben Ahlbrecht, Carly Rouch and Kira McCoy; D3 students Megan
Davenport, Susie Shim, Cory Timbers, Carter McCrea, Emily Sadler, and Emily
Noble; and D2 students Clayton Craig, Laura Davila, Jessica Grams, Daniel
OCallaghan, John Rapp, and Miriam Viernes.
