Dr. V. Wallace McCarlie Receives Prestigious Fellowship – Twice

Row, Row, Row Our Boat: We Gotta Regatta! On Sept. 19, the IUPUI Alumni Council and 2 other alumni groups are sponsoring their INAUGURAL REGATTA: A CANOE RACE ON THE DOWNTOWN CANAL, and you can join in this new adventure if you are an IUPUI student, grad, faculty, or staff. The competition will be a half-mile race from the Admiral Spruance Basin to the USS Indianapolis Basin and back. Four paddlers will be permitted, 2 at a time, and the paddlers must switch off at the half-way point. Proceeds will support student scholarships. There will also be food, music, and other games to play. IUPUI is encouraging all the schools and units to organize teams (and multiple teams from each unit are fine). For info about registration fees and to register your team, go to www.alumni.iupui.edu.

Johnny’s Take on John. The movie Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp as the 1930s Hoosier outlaw John Dillinger premieres today, telling the tale of the man who led an Indianapolis gang called the Dirty Dozen when he was a kid, and who was named America’s first Public Enemy Number One by the time he was 31. Dillinger grew up in Indianapolis and Mooresville, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. Part of the film was shot in Crown Point, Ind., at the old Lake County jail, which Dillinger escaped from a few months before his death in 1934. You can see the film’s trailer at this New York Times Website:

I Declare: Our Founding Fathers Were the Kings of Coincidence. Thomas Jefferson was the brilliant primary author of the Declaration of Independence, and noted orator John Adams served as the Declaration’s dynamic voice and passionate defender. The two men had a complicated, on again off again friendship, and often were bitter rivals. (Adams, who followed George Washington in the presidency, lost his bid for a second term to his own vice president, Jefferson – ouch!) Jefferson retired to his Monticello estate in Virginia, and lived to be 83. Adams retired to Quincy, Mass., and lived to be 90. They died, each in his own home, within a few hours of one another on the very same day – which also happened to be July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Charles in Charge. 40 years ago on this night and the following evening, Charles Manson masterminded one of America’s most brutal and senseless killing sprees, which resulted in the murder in Los Angeles of actress Sharon Tate, her unborn son, and 6 others. Early failed attempts to rehabilitate Manson in his childhood took place right here in central Indiana. He ran away from the Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute after 10 months, and took off from a juvenile center in Indianapolis after just one day. When he robbed a grocery store at age 13, he was sent to the Indiana Boys School at Plainfield. He ran away 18 times, and for good when he was 16, heading across the country with 2 other boys by stealing cars for transportation and burglarizing gas stations for pocket money.

People, Places, and Things

McCarlie, Van Wallace - Portait Dr. McCarlie

DR. V. WALLACE McCARLIE AWARDED TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP. He has just completed a year as one of the first scholars to receive a prestigious Young Investigator Award in Translational Research from the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), and now PhD candidate Dr. V. Wallace McCarlie has learned that he will spend yet another year pursuing a second CTSI fellowship, beginning July 1.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the CTSI supports research efforts throughout Indiana (www.indianactsi.org). The institute has partnered with Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame as well as Eli Lilly & Company and other key community and business organizations. Dean Lawrence Goldblatt represents the School of Dentistry on CTSI’s internal advisory committee.

A native of Las Vegas and a dental graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, McCarlie entered IU’s PhD degree program in Dental Science in 2007. “I seek to understand how a person’s genetic makeup relates to oral bacteria that lead to dental caries,” he says. “In other words, I’m looking at how certain genes make some of us susceptible and some of us resistant to dental caries.”

The CTSI training positions are designed to provide promising students with the opportunity to be mentored in research-intensive multidisciplinary settings, toward the goal of developing careers in translational research.

Translational research is the fascinating process by which discoveries in the lab transition into the everyday practice of healthcare. The NIH describes it best on its Website: “To improve human health, scientific discoveries must be translated into practical applications. Such discoveries typically begin at ‘the bench’ with basic research — in which scientists study disease at a molecular or cellular level — then progress to the clinical level, or the patient's ‘bedside.’ ”

McCarlie’s research is mentored by Dr. Margherita Fontana, Preventive and Community Dentistry, and co-mentored by Dr. Richard Gregory, Oral Biology, and former IU professor Dr. James Hartsfield Jr., now of the University of Kentucky.

McCarlie says he’s enjoying his research for two main reasons: First, it’s a chance to get to the bottom of a scientific mystery in an important field of dentistry. “There remain unexplained variables with regard to dental caries, leading us to understand that the answer is not purely environmental,” he says. “I have always sought after what’s underneath it all. So, how our DNA affects what disease we get and how we respond to that disease, is about as fundamental as you can get.

“Caries is a ubiquitous disease worldwide and, in many cases, causes severe quality of life issues,” he continues. “To combat the disease by more fully understanding its nature is something that inspires me.”

McCarlie’s second reason for choosing this avenue of study is for the exciting multidisciplinary approach it offers him. “My research spans the fields of genetics, immunology, microbiology, cariology, dental medicine, and medicine in general,” he says. “This is the direction science has gone: If you do not understand multiple fields at some depth, your understanding of any disease will lack the potential that’s out there. What’s funny is that since I’ve been working in this research area, more people than I might have expected have voluntarily told me that they already knew that genetics played a significant part in the disease.”

McCarlie’s multidisciplinary interests are not limited to research – they have played out in other ways within the academic community at large. He’s been very active in organizational work that crosses the disciplines, including service as chair of IUSD’s Advanced Graduate Committee and as a representative (and current vice president) of the IUPUI Graduate Student Organization (GSO), which serves more than 8,000 graduate and professional students. Also during 2009-2010, he will chair the IUPUI Review Committee for Graduate Student Educational Enhancement Grants, and he will serve on the IUPUI Preparing Future Faculty Oversight Committee.

PROMOTION AND TENURE. Congratulations to IUSD Librarian Janice Cox, who has been awarded tenure, effective July 1, 2010, and to Dr. Carmen Paez de Mendoza, who has been promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry.

DENTAL PROFS ACCEPT IUPUI FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS. The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties has announced the appointment of Professor Gail Williamson of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology and Dr. Richard Jackson of Preventive and Community Dentistry as Faculty Fellows in the Office of Academic Affairs. You can read the full announcement in this IUPUI news release: http://newscenter.iupui.edu/?id=3992.

CONSUMER REPORTS. Keep your eyes peeled for the August issue of Consumer Reports, which is planning to include an article about tooth whiteners. Our own Dr. Bruce Matis, Restorative Dentistry, was interviewed by the magazine as an expert in this field.

HIP HEALTH HOORAY. Dental and dental hygiene volunteers from the IU School of Dentistry Kids Club once again played a significant role in the production of the annual Hip Health Hooray Fair, held at the Ruth Lilly Education Center on May 30. About 85 children received oral health education, including demonstrations of an intraoral camera. The 10 student volunteers led a discussion of tooth friendly foods, used puppets to conduct tooth-brushing lessons, and dispensed goody bags to the kids. Volunteers for this event included Marissa Kish (DH Class of 2010); Jennifer Sitjar and Miriam Viernes (DDS Class of 2012); Megan Davenport (DDS Class of 2011); and Rachel Dunlop, Joe Jackson, Katie Nichols, Carly Rauch, Aaron Stump, and David Wagner (DDS Class of 2010). Also participating was Dr. Joan Kowolik of Pediatric Dentistry.

NOTES – AND TV TAPE – FROM BRAZIL. The IU School of Dentistry’s 3rd annual service-learning trip in June to the city of Mandirituba in the Brazilian state of Paraná was a big success, says faculty mentor Dr. Andréa Ferreira Zandoná of Preventive and Community Dentistry. This year she was accompanied by new IUSD graduate Dr. John Jeppson as well as Robert Brandt and Aaron Layton of the DDS Class of 2010. They treated patients at a community clinic, including children from a local home for boys. Once again they were joined in their patient care efforts by dental students from Brazil’s Positivo University. This year, Positivo’s med students participated, too. “We were featured on the news on the main television broadcast in the state, and we also made the cover of the state’s largest newspaper,” says Ferreira Zandoná. “Hopefully this media exposure will bring about some donations to the boys home.”

Check out the clever front-page newspaper photo: That’s Brandt holding the giant toothbrush, Jeppson is seated at left, Ferreira Zandoná is standing at right, and Layton is in the center of the back row, in the dark-colored scrubs. Those of you who have brushed up on your Portuguese will also enjoy the article:

http://portal.rpc.com.br/gazetadopovo/vidaecidadania/conteudo.phtml?tl=1&id=897912&tit=Pelo-sorriso-dos-meninos.

Being interviewed by a television reporter while the cameras roll can be an intimidating experience even when you’re speaking your own language, but the IUSD volunteers looked cool and collected under pressure as they gave their interviews in Portuguese! The TV station has clustered the IU video clip with 2 other news items at the paper’s online site, but you can fast forward through the first 2 items, which are brief (1.44 min. and 3.03 min., respectively), to get to the IU story: http://portal.rpc.com.br/tv/paranaense/video.phtml?Video_ID=&assistaIntegraPorDataTopo=true&data=2009-06-18&Progra_ID=5.

13 BUDDING RESEARCHERS IN ORAL BIOLOGY THIS SUMMER. A dozen IUPUI students and one from a college in Kentucky have received awards that paved the way for the undergrads to conduct research projects with dental faculty this summer. All of the research is associated with the dental school’s Tobacco Cessation and Biobehavioral Center, and is under the mentorship of Oral Biology faculty.

Recipients of the IUPUI campus’s MURI stipends (Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute) are Anna Jouravlev and Inessa Levitt of IUPUI and Danielle Cory of Ashbury College in Wilmore, Ky. IUPUI student Kathryn Delacruz is conducting her research as a recipient of a Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation award (LSAMP). Mentor is Dr. Richard Gregory.

IUPUI students also receiving MURI awards are Mia Recupito and Elizabeth Smith (Dr. L. Jack Windsor, mentor); Boniface Nganga and Milan Patel (Dr. Fengyu Song, mentor); Rachel Falknor, Mariam Hanna, and Lauren Schummer (Dr. Laura Romito, mentor); and Delnaaz Daruwala and Han Shih (Drs. Gregory, Windsor, and Karen Gregson, mentors).

DOCTOR WHO SAVED HER OWN LIFE DIES OF CANCER. The physician who became famous for heroically saving her own life while stationed at the South Pole died of cancer on June 23. As the only doctor at the National Science Foundation’s remote Amundsen-Scott South Pole Research Station in 1999, Dr. Jerri Nielsen (Nielsen FitzGerald at the time of her death) had to perform a biopsy on herself when she was stricken with breast cancer. During the Antarctic’s winter months, it’s impossible for outsiders to reach the station for any purpose, including a rescue mission. Reaching out to Nielsen from afar was IU School of Medicine cancer specialist Dr. Kathy Miller, who used telemedicine (videoconferencing and the Internet) to help manage Nielsen’s treatment for several months, until the weather finally made it possible for her to leave the station. Nielsen’s cancer went into remission after she received further treatment at IU Hospital. She lived life fully during the next decade, returning to Antarctica several times and writing a best-selling book about her experience.
