Maynard K. Hine Posthumously Inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy
Hall of Fame
Indiana University’s longest-serving dean of dentistry was posthumously
inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA) International Hall of Fame of
Dentistry in the fall of 2007, becoming only the 20th person to
receive this prestigious recognition. The honor places Dr. Maynard Hine, who
served as dean (1945-68) and as first chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue
University Indianapolis (1969-73), in the company of such legendary figures in
dentistry as Dr. Fauchard and Dr. G.V. Black. The academy chooses candidates
whose distinguished records of service are known by the dental profession
throughout the world. The Hall of Fame actually has two locations: at the French
Federation of Dentistry in Paris and at the Samuel D. Harris National Museum of
Dentistry in Baltimore, Md. In addition to honoring Dr. Hine at these sites, the
PFA has given the IU School of Dentistry a plaque for permanent display at the
school. It was presented in October at the Fall Dental Alumni Conference, with
Dr. Hine’s son, Dr. William Hine, Terre Haute, Ind., and grandsons, IUSD
Professors William Hine Jr. and Charles Hine, among the family members who
participated in the Indianapolis event. The Pierre Fauchard Academy pays tribute
to Dr. Hine and his extraordinary career at
