62nd FALL DENTAL ALUMNI CONFERENCE, a special celebration marking 125 years of dental education in the Hoosier state. Since the focus is on the dental school this year, the campus (University Place Hotel) is serving as conference headquarters. Please do whatever you can to help IUSD Alumni Association President Dr. Ron Ditto, Lafayette, and his board of directors welcome IUSD's graduates back to the school. Tours are scheduled for Saturday, but alums will be attending a CE program in the building on Friday, and we can expect some of our alumni to be touring informally on their own during their free time at any point in the conference. Please be prepared to roll out the red carpet for these folks should they happen to grace the doorway of your clinic, your lab, your office, or your classroom. Friday's CE course is being presented by a very special guest: Capt. Carol Turner, who last November became the first woman in history to be named chief of the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. Capt. Turner is also one of IU's own -- she's an alumna from the DDS Class of 1975 (and a former classmate of Dr. Jack Schaaf, associate professor of dental diagnostic sciences). Capt. Turner will discuss the challenges of dentistry in the military. She'll receive the 2004 IUSD Distinguished Alumna Award at the conference banquet Friday evening.

People, Places, and Things

STILL RECEIVING DIPLOMAS, EVEN IN RETIREMENT. Congratulations to Dr. Charles Tomich, professor emeritus of oral pathology, who recently was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Montreal Faculty of Dentistry in Quebec, Canada. The "honoris causa doctorate" was bestowed during a ceremony in conjunction with the Montreal dental school's 2004 graduation exercises and 100th anniversary celebration. The award recognizes Dr. Tomich's many career achievements and in particular acknowledges the role he played in educating students at IU who eventually became faculty members at the University of Montreal.

"We were very happy to have Chuck with us," reported University of Montreal faculty member Dr. Monique Michaud, a 1976 graduate of IU's master's degree program in oral diagnosis/oral medicine. Dr. Michaud is the Faculty of Dentistry's registrar and chair of the school's Department of Stomatology. "The honorary degree was conferred upon him because our Faculty of Dentistry feels a special bond with IU since at least nine of our professors trained at IU between 1964 and 1976. Chuck taught us all."

Although he retired from IU in 2001 Dr. Tomich continues to volunteer his services, teaching a seminar to the oral and maxillofacial surgery residents. The year 2004 has brought him much-deserved recognition both locally and abroad: In addition to this honorary degree, he received the Indiana Dental Association's Maynard K. Hine Award, the association's highest honor.

ROOT-LOSS STUDY BY DR. KATONA FUNDED BY NIH. For the next three years, Dr. Thomas Katona will be using a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study root resorption, a frequent result of orthodontic treatment. An associate professor of orthodontics at the School of Dentistry and of mechanical engineering at the School of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Katona was awarded a grant in the amount of $790,000 from the NIH's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Funding for the grant, titled "Root Deformation and Root Resorption," began on August 1. Dr. Katona is the primary investigator, and his co-investigators are Dr. Jie Chen, associate professor of mechanical engineering and orthodontics; Dr. Eugene Roberts, the Joseph R. and Louise Ada Jarabak Professor of Orthodontics; and Dr. Edwin Parks, professor of dental diagnostic sciences.

It has been estimated that 90% of patients experience detectable root loss after being treated orthodontically, with up to 58% having severe loss (greater than 5 mm). Dr. Katona proposes that root injury is caused in two ways during treatment: first, by the tension and compression a root undergoes as it flexes; and second, by the accompanying shear stresses within the cementum-dentin interface. He also hypothesizes that normal physiological defects act as stress concentrators that intensify local root damage, in turn leaving the damaged root more vulnerable to resorption.

The research team will study these phenomena on cadaveric teeth by using mechanical testing, histology, finite element computer models, and a novel application of three-dimensional x-ray microtomography (microCT). The multidisciplinary project is expected to contribute to the understanding of the mechanism of orthodontics-associated root resorption, and also to demonstrate the potential of 3D microCT imaging to become the new "gold standard" in the assessment of calcified tissue damage.

DR. MILLER BRINGS HOME A "BRONZE" AND A "SILVER" (FROM PHILLY, NOT ATHENS). Congratulations to Executive Associate Dean Dr. Chris Miller, whose talents as a columnist for the publication Dental Products Report were recognized by the American Society of Business Publication Editors during an awards ceremony in Philadelphia, Pa., in June. Dr. Miller, a contributing editor for the magazine, and his colleague Eileen White, an associate editor, won a bronze award for their monthly column, "Infection Control Report," placing third nationally in the category for regular columns appearing in publications with distribution greater than 80,000. Dr. Miller, a national authority on infection control, writes the column and Ms. White edits it. In addition to the bronze, they won a silver award in the Midwest regional category. The awards were based on two sample DPR columns published in 2003 titled "Keep It Clean! What You Don't See Can Hurt You" and "Hand Hygiene Guide."

DENTAL ASSSISTING FACULTY ADDRESS DISTANCE LEARNING AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE. Two members of IU's Dental Assisting faculty assumed high profiles at the National Dental Assisting Educators Conference by accepting an invitation to speak on distance learning. Held in August at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, the meeting featured a presentation by Prof. Patricia Capps, director of Dental Assisting, and Teresa Macauley, clinical lecturer in dental assisting, titled "Distance Learning in the Dental Assisting Curriculum." There was a follow-up panel discussion including teachers from the University of North Carolina; East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.; and Washtenaw Community College, Ann Arbor, Mich. IU's Dental Assisting division is currently laying early groundwork for a state-of-the-art distance-learning certificate program that could become active as early as 2007.

NEW PERIO GRAD IS A NATIONAL AWARD CONTENDER. When it comes to prestigious honors, the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs is hopeful that Dr. Gary Yip, a 2004 graduate of the periodontics program, will soon follow in the footsteps of 2002 IU perio grad Dr. Robert DePoi. Dr. Yip, who now practices in Kew, Australia, has received word that he is one of only three finalists in the country for the American Academy of Periodontology's Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholar Award, which honors the nation's most outstanding third-year graduate student in periodontics. Dr. DePoi, of Melbourne, Australia, received the top honor in 2002. Dr. Yip and the other finalists will be interviewed by the AAP selection committee during the academy's annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., in November. The winner of the $10,000 prize will also be announced at that meeting and honored at a reception. For his master's degree research at IU, Dr. Yip wrote and defended a thesis titled "Digital Microradiography: In Vitro Validation of a Novel Imaging Technique."
