Recognition Month for IUSD's
Patient Services Employees

September's calendar contains a lot more items than usual about other IUPUI school events and activities, all of which are potentially of interest to you. These entries are being included in the dental calendar this month only so that those of you who do not already subscribe to JAG NEWS can get an idea of the type of information you'll find in this campuswide electronic messaging system, which is available to any IUPUI employee or student who has an e-mail account. Jag News is jointly managed by Communications and Marketing, and University Information Technology Services. Subscribers automatically receive messages every few days. All of the messages are related to campus news and are sponsored by IUPUI schools, organizations, or departments. Jag News is a great way to keep abreast of IUPUI's rich variety of seminars, research studies, workshops, sporting events, and entertainment. To subscribe, go to http://www.iupui.edu/~extaff/jagnews.htm, where you can also learn more about Jag News. Click on "JAGNEWS-L archives page" in the second paragraph on that page, and then choose "join or leave the list." target="_blank"

Stand tall. Throw back your shoulders. Flash your best toothy smile. And remember, there's strength in numbers. The 11th annual IUSD GROUP PHOTO for staff, students, and faculty is to be taken today at 12:15 p.m. Dean Lawrence Goldblatt invites you to join him at our usual site, the yard east of the dental school. We are once again enlisting the help of the medical school's photographers, who will rise to the occasion in a cherry picker in order to squeeze all of us into the photo. We had a great turnout last fall, but we can do much, much better. Frankly, we haven't presented these guys with much of a photographic challenge the last couple of years. Let's double our numbers today--and test the outer limits of the camera's wide-angle lens. Don't forget to bring along your sunglasses if your eyes are sensitive. The photo shoot will take only a few minutes of your time--please join us if you can. Rain date (same place and time) is Tuesday, Oct. 1.

People, Places & Things

HELP OTHERS EXPLORE IUPUI. On Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the campus is opening its doors for Explore IUPUI, a unique event that will inspire community residents, prospective students, alumni, and current students and staff to explore and discover this leading urban university. With more than 300 interactive activities planned for the day, there is a great need for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are abundant--you can help staff the Family FunFest area, serve as a tour guide, staff an information station, or assist in many other ways. Early volunteer registrants will receive a free Explore IUPUI team tee shirt during the volunteer training. Sign-up today at www.explore.iupui.edu. You can also contact Andrea Engler, volunteer chair, at aengler@iupui.edu. For all other questions regarding Explore IUPUI please contact Kelly Young, kryoung@iupui.edu.

SCHOLARSHIP. Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Slaven, a first-year student in the graduate periodontics program who has received one of the 5 scholarships for new students that are awarded nationally each year by the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Slaven is a 2002 dental graduate of the University of Michigan.

ANOTHER JARABAK HONOR. He's just getting used to being known as the Jarabak Professor, and now Dr. Gene Roberts has learned that he will soon be accepting yet another prestigious award that bears the Jarabak name. Dr. Roberts, director of the Division of Orthodontics, was recently informed that he and Dr. Hall Perry of Northwestern University have been chosen as the 2003 co-recipients of the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award, which is bestowed by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) through its foundation. The award honors distinguished educators and researchers for their contributions to the field of orthodontics. It is named for the wife of the late Dr. Joseph Jarabak, who was a well-known figure in dental education and within the orthodontic community as well as a benefactor of the IU dental school. Dr. Roberts was appointed by Indiana University as the Joseph R. and Louise Ada Jarabak Professor of Orthodontics last fall. He will accept his most recent honor during the AAO's annual meeting in Hawaii in May.

NEW OFFICERS. The votes are tallied, with the following dental students now elected as the new officers of the dental school's Student Research Group: President--David Swiderski, 4th year; Vice President--Caroline Derrow, 3rd year; and Secretary/Treasurer--Erin Cox, 4th year.

SALUTING THE VOLUNTEERS. A word of thanks is in order for 18 IUSD faculty and staff members and others who served as volunteer screeners and recorders during the second annual Summer Health Assessment Program and Education known as S.H.A.P.E. This community-sponsored program provided health screenings and education to more than 1,000 youngsters in Marion County who attended summer youth camps during June, July, and August. Helping make the project a success in 2002 were Dr. Lawrence Garetto, Dr. Charles Hazelrigg, Dr. William Hohlt, and clinics administrator Judith Rose, all of the Department of Oral Facial Development; Dr. Henry Lancaster, Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology; Prof. Lorinda Coan, Prof. Joyce Hudson, lecturer Melinda Meadows, Dr. Sybil Niemann, Dr. James Oldham, Prof. Pamela Rettig, and Prof. Nancy Young, Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs; Dr. Margherita Fontana, Dr. Mark Mallatt, Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier, Dr. Karen Yoder, and Dr. Paul Zitterbart, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. Larry Ryan, Department of Restorative Dentistry; Nicole Weddell, daughter of pediatric dentistry faculty member Dr. James Weddell; and private practitioner Dr. Donald Newman.

SEMINARS ON HEALTH LITERACY. The IU School of Nursing was recently awarded a grant to carry out a series of seminars on health literacy, which refers to the ability of patients to obtain, interpret, and understand health information. Patients with low health literacy skills are more likely to be hospitalized and have poor health outcomes, and are less likely to obtain preventive care. Dr. Feleta Wilson, visiting lecturer from Wayne State University, will kick off the seminar series on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Riley Outpatient Auditorium. Other speakers will include medical school faculty member Dr. J. Dennis Fortenberry, Clarian Health nurses Maureen Battles and Cindy Latty, and Shalom Health Care Center coordinator of Latino Services, Liz Farfan. Other sessions on the topic will be scheduled throughout the academic year.

Dr. Rose Mays, IU School of Nursing associate dean for community affairs and developer of the grant proposal, says the goal for the seminars is to increase health professionals' awareness and competency in addressing health literacy with patients. " We must look at how effectively we are giving care from the standpoint of the pamphlets and other written tools we use for patient education," she says. "For people who don't read well, there can be huge barriers to getting the care they need."

The seminars are free and are open to faculty, staff, and students. No preregistration is required. For more details, contact Dr. Mays (274-3470; rmays@iupui.edu).

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR INFANT LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT STUDY. The IU School of Medicine's Department of Otolaryngology is seeking infants between 2 and 18 months of age or 28 to 30 months of age to participate in groundbreaking language-development research. The research involves both infants who are deaf and use cochlear implants and those who have normal hearing. The department is currently recruiting infants who have normal hearing. You and your child may participate in one or more 45-minute sessions, arranged at your convenience. Testing is non-invasive, and parents are with their children at all times. Participants are paid $10 per session. Contact the Infant Speech Perception Lab for more details: 278-1350, babytalk@iupui.edu, http://www.iupui.edu/~iuoto/babytalk.htm

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DIABETIC RESEARCH. Do you have diabetes? Are you having trouble controlling your blood sugar with diet and exercise? Do you have a family history and want to be tested for diabetes? You may be eligible to participate in a research study and to receive, at no cost, active diabetes medication, glucose monitoring supplies, study-related medical care and testing, and diabetes and nutritional education. IU's Department of Endocrinology is looking for patients who are 20-75 years of age and who have had diabetes less than 5 years. For more information, call 274-7679.
