Dean Goldblatt invites all students, staff, and faculty to participate with him in this time-honored photo tradition. And have a sweater or jacket handy in case we're having a "frost on the pumpkin" kind of day. Let's get as many people as possible to pose for the 2004 version of the IU dental school team, since with this shot we go down in history as the school's 125th Anniversary Group. The photo will take only a few minutes of your time. Please join us if your schedule permits.

James Dean was a rebel when he wore his in 1955. Venus was a walkin' talkin' work of art when she wore hers in 1962. And you can be a symbol of the fight against breast cancer by wearing yours today.

The LEE NATIONAL DENIM DAY fund drive supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and staff member Debra Lanning is once again asking you to play a role in this important project. As coordinator of IUSD's participation in the annual drive, Debra is hopeful that donations from the school's students, staff, and faculty will push us past the 2003 total of nearly $1,500.

For a minimum donation of only $5, you receive a pink ribbon pin that entitles you to wear blue jeans to work today. (All infection control guidelines must be followed as usual.) Donations can be made with cash or by checks payable to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. See one of the campaign representatives to donate: lst floor -- Kim Fields (rm 102) and T.C. Calvert (S107); 2nd floor -- Deborah Komlanc and Deanna Henderson (266), Margie Beiswanger (280B), and Julie Lewis (280); 3rd floor -- Karen Liford (Clinic A), Tonjia Cauley (Clinic D), and Brenda Hartman (302); 4th floor -- Kay Rossok (S409) and Debra Lanning (S422A); Oral Health Research Institute -- Susan Boggs; IU Hospital -- Charity Key; and Riley Hospital Dental Clinic -- Donna Bumgardner. Donations at Cottage Corner should be sent care of the department, and representatives at Regenstrief and Grassy Creek are yet to be announced.

People, Places & Things

A CASCADE OF AWARDS IN SEPTEMBER. Congratulations to the following individuals who were singled out for awards and other recognition at various events in the past month.

IUSD Alumni Association Awards (presented at the Fall Dental Alumni Conference):

Capt. Carol Turner (DDS'75), who in 2003 became the first woman to hold the title of Chief of the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, received the Distinguished Alumna Award.

ADA presidential candidate Dr. Lloyd Hagedorn received the Distinguished Service Award. He is a past member of the IUSD Alumni Association's board of directors.

Dr. Steven Dixon, clinical assistant professor of operative dentistry, received the Certificate of Appreciation. Dr. Dixon, a 1973 IU dental graduate, manages the dental school's Comprehensive Care program and directs the Comprehensive Care Clinics.

Dr. Steven Holm, a dental graduate of Loyola University and a practitioner in Portage, received the Honorary Member Award. He has served as an adjunct dental faculty member on the IU Northwest (Gary) campus since 1977, teaching oral pathology and anatomy.

Community Service Awards (presented at the Faculty Conference and Staff Conference and supported by the Johnson Public Health Fund, which is named for Class of '56 IU dental graduate and retired public health dentist Donald Johnson, Carmel):

Melinda Meadows, visiting clinical lecturer in the Dental Hygiene division of the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, received the Faculty Community Service Award for her extensive record of involvement with community projects, including those that help expose students to volunteerism and service-learning opportunities. Since 2001, she has coordinated the school's ongoing sealant program for children who reside in several of the city's shelters for homeless persons and victims of domestic violence. She has also served as a volunteer for Marion County's project S.H.A.P.E., an annual screening and education program for children from low-income families, and as the patient coordinator for the IUSD treatment site of the annual ADA Give Kids a Smile program.

Staff Community Service Awards were presented to Karla Newman, assistant to the chair, Department of Oral Facial Development; Elizabeth (Beth) Wyeth, a dental hygienist at Cottage Corner; and Debra Lanning, senior administrative secretary for the Comprehensive Care Clinics. These staff members have devoted much of their energy and volunteered many hours of their time to the annual fund drives that support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Deb was recognized for her work with Lee National Denim Day, and Karla and Beth for their efforts with the Race for the Cure. Thanks in large measure to their leadership, commitment, and enthusiasm, IUPUI can count on the School of Dentistry to be a generous participant in these community fundraising projects.

Staff Scholarships (presented at the Staff Conference):

Recipients are A.J. Beiswanger, a research technician in Restorative Dentistry, and Katherine English, a senior administrative secretary in Dental Education. Sponsored by the IUSD Staff Council, this scholarship program was established to assist staff members who are balancing full-time careers with their roles as students of higher education. Both A.J. and Kathy are enrolled as students on the IUPUI campus.

Indiana Dental Association Faculty Awards (presented during the Faculty Conference);

Dr. Henry Lancaster Jr., clinical assistant professor of oral medicine in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology, received the IDA's Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for academic year 2003-2004.

Dr. Lancaster spent the past year deeply engaged in most facets of education at IUSD, teaching dental and allied dental students as well as general practice residents. For the dental classes alone he has lectured, provided clinical instruction, directed a module on the respiratory system, tutored problem-based learning sessions, written PBL cases, and conducted triple-jump exams. He also makes effective and creative use of computer technology in his teaching. He receives excellent feedback from students and uses their evaluations to continue improving upon his skills. Members of the DDS Class of 2004 showed their appreciation of Dr. Lancaster by inviting him to be the guest speaker at Post-Commencement last spring, and previous classes have chosen him to participate in the Post-Commencement hooding exercises.

In recent years, Dr. Lancaster has played a role on the school's executive, teaching, admissions, and curriculum committees and on the IUPUI Institutional Review Board for research. He recently accepted an appointment as director of one of the school's Comprehensive Care Clinics.

Dr. James Hartsfield Jr., professor of oral facial genetics and orthodontics (School of Dentistry) and medical and molecular genetics (School of Medicine), received the Outstanding Faculty Award for his long record of quality teaching, scholarly activity, and service.

Dr. Hartsfield directs the division of Oral Facial Genetics in the Department of Oral Facial Development, and serves as a clinical geneticist in Riley Hospital's internationally respected Oral Facial Clinic. He lectures in both dental and graduate courses, and chairs a number of research committees for candidates of PhD and MSD degrees.

He has acquired extensive editorial experience as a reviewer for refereed journals in his field, and has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences. He is a past recipient of an NIH Physician-Scientist award, and from 1996 to 2001 he was the principal investigator on an NIH-supported project titled "Epoxide Hydrolase Studies and Phenytoin-Induced Clefting." In 2001, he received a $15,000 B.F. Dewell Memorial Biomedical Research Award from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation to study genetic factors in external apical root resorption associated with orthodontic treatment. He is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics and a past president of the Society of Craniofacial Genetics.

Dr. Hartsfield was the 2003 recipient of the IUSD Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Award for Research. Also that year, he was elected vice president of the International Association for Dental Research's Craniofacial Biology Group for 2003-2004. As president-elect, he will chair the Craniofacial Biology portion of the 2005 IADR/American Association for Dental Research meeting in Baltimore, Md., and will then serve as the group's president during the 2006 AADR meeting in Orlando, Fla., and IADR meeting in Brisbane, Australia.

IUSD Staff Council Staff Excellence Award (presented at the Staff Conference):

Charlene Childers, coordinator of Comprehensive Care Clinic B, is the latest award recipient in a staff recognition program that has been saluting IUSD's finest since 1998. In the case of Charlene Childers, a dedicated IUSD employee for 11 years, it was the dental students' voices that came through loud and clear during the nomination process. Their descriptions of her add up to a dream candidate for any dental practice team: helpful, pleasant, caring, knowledgeable, resourceful, and the type of employee whose talents reach well beyond the confines of a job description.

Anyone acquainted with the non-stop action in a Comp Care clinic when it's running at full capacity can appreciate Charlene's outstanding ability to oversee all of the activity with her exceptionally calm and professional demeanor.

The nomination letters are filled with anecdotes about the thoughtfulness and kindness that Charlene routinely extends not only to students but also to their patients. A student recalls when Charlene gave a "thinking of you" card to one of the student's patients when that patient was having health problems. And then there's the ever-popular celebration that Charlene holds once a month in recognition of students' birthdays.

But from the student perspective, there is perhaps no greater praise than these straightforward remarks from a third-year student. Charlene "treats you with respect," he says simply, and she makes sure "that our experience in clinic is a good one."
