12th ANNUAL IUSD GROUP PHOTO with Dean Lawrence Goldblatt,
12:15 p.m. in the yard east of the dental school. Dean Goldblatt invites all
students, staff, and faculty to participate with him in this annual photo
tradition. (Can you believe we've already been "striking the pose" for a dozen
years?) The medical school photographers will once again take a vertical ride in
a cherry picker in order to fit all of us into their camera frame. The more of
us, the better -- let's push the cherry picker to its limit. Don't push your
eyeballs to the limit, though -- protect them with your sunglasses as you tilt
your head to smile into the sky. The photo will take only a few minutes of your
time. Please join us if you can.

People, Places & Things
ELECTED TO THE BOARD. Dr. Jeffrey Dean, acting chair of the Department
of Oral Facial Development, was recently elected by the American Academy of
Pediatric Dentistry to a five-year term as a director of the American Board of
Pediatric Dentistry.
AAP HONORS DR. HANCOCK. Dr. E. Brady Hancock, chair of the Department
of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, has received a Fellowship Award from
the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). Given in recognition of
distinguished service to the academy in more than one area, the award was
presented at the AAP's annual meeting in San Francisco last month. Dr. Hancock
has served the academy as chair of the Ethics Committee and the Subcommittee for
the Research Forum, as a reviewer for the Journal of Periodontology, and
as a consultant to the ADA's Commission on Dental Accreditation. He is a
diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, which he served as a director
for from 1994 to 1999.
FORMER PROF STILL ON A ROLL. Congratulations to Dr. Charles Moll for
once again taking a leading position in the U.S. Cycling Federation's Masters
National Championships. Dr. Moll, an assistant professor of oral and
maxillofacial surgery who served on the part-time faculty from 1970 to 2002, has
long been one of the "guys to beat" in the world of cycling. At the
championships held in Louisville, Ky., in August, Dr. Moll won the National
Criterium Championship in the 60-64 age group. He also wheeled his way into 2nd
place in the Road Race and into 6th in the 25-mile Time Trial. "These
results were good for 2nd in the best overall competition," he says.
The wins are especially meaningful to Dr. Moll this time because they come after
his recovery from open heart surgery, which he underwent just one year and one
month before the race. "I was able to accomplish a goal that a year ago I
thought would not be possible," he says.
IDA AWARDS. The Indiana Dental Association's annual faculty awards were
presented during the Faculty Conference in September.
Dr. Marguerita Fontana, assistant professor of preventive and
community dentistry, received the IDA's Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award
for excellence in teaching during the 2002-2003 academic year. A member of the
IU faculty since 1992, Dr. Fontana carries a heavy teaching load. She presents
lectures in 9 courses and serves as a module director, clinic instructor,
Problem-Based Learning tutor, PBL case writer and trainer, and triple-jump
examiner. She has received very good student evaluations and has used them to
further hone her teaching skills. Dr. Fontana directs the undergraduate
curriculum in her department and also the Microbial Caries Research Facility,
where she teaches in part by drawing upon the experiences she is acquiring as a
contributor to peer-reviewed dental journals, as principal investigator on three
grants, and as the manager of additional contract testing projects. She mentors
several dental and master's degree students, and serves on the graduate
committees of several more students in the advanced programs. Dr. Fontana is a
member of the dental school's Admissions, Curriculum Progress, and Research
Committees.
The IDA's Outstanding Faculty Award went to Dr. Richard Gregory,
professor of oral biology, pathology, and laboratory medicine, and director of
the PhD Program, for his ongoing record of quality teaching, scholarly activity,
and service. Joining the IUSD faculty in 1991, Dr. Gregory balances a full
teaching load with a significant amount of time devoted to nurturing the
research interests of students at every level. He's served as primary mentor to
dozens of individuals, including high schoolers, undergrads, dental students,
candidates for master's and PhD degrees, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting
scientists. And as IUSD director of Student Research, he routinely advises many
more students. Dr. Gregory is pursuing active grants and contracts and as an
author or co-author has published more than 70 refereed papers, 190 research
abstracts, and additional review articles and book chapters. He is engaged in
the professional societies within his field, serving as a journal reviewer,
grant reviewer, and consulting editor. In 2001, Dr. Gregory agreed to step in as
IUSD's acting director of research while a search was under way for a new
associate dean for research. He has earned several teaching awards at IU,
including the IUSD Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Award for
Research.
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS. The contributions of two professors and one staff
member to community oral health through IUSD linked community-based programs
were recognized during the faculty and staff conferences in September.
Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier, assistant professor of preventive and
community dentistry, and Dr. Timothy Carlson, professor of operative
dentistry, received the school's Faculty Community Service Award, which is
supported by the Johnson Public Health Fund, named for IUSD graduate and retired
public health dentist Donald Johnson (DDS'56), of Carmel. Drs. Martinez-Mier
and Carlson are the on-site architects of the IUSD Alternative Spring Break
healthcare missions to rural Mexico and Haiti, respectively. Dr. Martinez-Mier
created a dental program that now serves as a strong component of the medical
school's annual mission to Calnali, Mexico, and Dr. Carlson built his program at
the Christianville Mission in Haiti in part by leaning on knowledge he acquired
first-hand as a volunteer dentist in Haiti for two years in the late 1970s. Both
have annually traveled to the treatment sites as mentors of the student
volunteers since this invaluable service-learning program's inception in 2001.
Success can be measured in part by student participation, which increases every
year, and by the fact that so many students return to Indiana feeling
personally, professionally, and educationally enriched by their opportunity to
provide care to persons so much in need of it.
Elvia Reyes-Martinez, a dental assistant in the Department of Oral Facial
Development, received the first Staff Community Service Award, which is also
supported by the Johnson Public Health Fund. During her 9 years of employment at
IUSD, Elvia has contributed in countless ways to the school's community outreach
efforts. Time and time again, she has stepped forward to serve as a volunteer
for such programs as the annual Shelter Dental Sealant Program, which provides
treatment to children living in city shelters housing the homeless and victims
of domestic violence; the ADA's Give Kids a Smile program; and the Indiana State
Special Olympics. Elvia's skills at assisting persons in need are equally
matched by her generous donation of time, since most of the school's community
programs are held in the evenings and on weekends. Elvia is always willing to
help IUSD employees and students communicate with Spanish-speaking dental
patients. In the late 1990s, she became certified by Wishard Health Services as
a medical Spanish interpreter after she completed three months of training as
part of the Nursing Education's Hispanic Health Project.
STAFF SCHOLARSHIPS. Elvia Reyes-Martinez was also one of two IUSD
staff members to be presented with a Staff Scholarship Award during the staff
conference. The other recipient is Dianne Heid, quality assurance
coordinator in clinical affairs. The scholarships are sponsored by the IUSD
Staff Council. Both Elvia and Dianne are pursuing degree programs at IUPUI.
STAFF EXCELLENCE. Deborah Komlanc, assistant to the chair in the
Department of Oral Biology, is the latest winner of the IUSD Staff Council's
Staff Excellence Award. She has served the dental school with excellence for
nearly 9 years. Described as an employee who "seizes opportunites to get the job
done" and one who makes "intelligent decisions under stress," Deborah was
already a highly experienced IU employee by the time she joined the dental
school. She had previously been working since 1973 at the School of Medicine,
first in pathology, then in anatomy, and from 1984 to 1994 in the Department of
Medicine.
Cited for her managerial skills in the oral biology department, Deborah
oversees three department accounts with a total annual budget of about $800,000.
"She also serves as the data and course manager of three major and complex DDS
courses relating to the basic sciences," says a nominator. "She has great
interaction with and serves as a troubleshooter for literally dozens of students
each semester regarding the grades in each course. She is courteous and
well-mannered and has the rare ability to defuse emotionally laden situations."
Deborah also receives kudos for her computer skills, which she continually
adds to. She administers the department's Web pages, and she is adept at using
the Oncourse system. As a nominator puts it: "Her expertise in computer skills
is recognized by the fact that others around IUSD come to her office to ‘see how
it should be done.' "
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS. Four individuals were singled out for awards by
the IUSD Alumni Association during ceremonies at the 61st Fall Dental
Alumni Conference, held in Indianapolis in September.
James Roche (DDS'47), IU professor emeritus of pediatric dentistry,
Carmel, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his stellar career as a
practitioner, educator, administrator, and national leader in pediatric
dentistry. Dr. Roche served the IU dental school with excellence in many key
roles, including a stint as associate dean for academic affairs. He retired in
1988, after a distinguished IUSD career spanning 40 years, the last 20 as a
full-time professor.
Additionally: A Distinguished Service Award went to Barry Ray
(DDS'80), a practitioner in Evansville, for his outstanding and longtime support
of Indiana University and the IUSD Alumni Association. He is a former president
of the IUSDAA board of directors. Dr. Clyde Parker, a retired Evansville
practitioner, received the IUSDAA Honorary Member Award for his leadership
efforts in healthcare in the state of Indiana, including a term in the 1960s as
president of the IDA. He is a dental graduate of the University of Louisville.
Finally, our own Pamela Lovejoy, director of annual funds and special
events, received a Certificate of Appreciation for all the work she does behind
the scenes throughout the year to assist the association with the programs and
events it produces for the dental school's alumni. As an ex officio member of
the IUSDAA board of directors, Pam keeps the board apprised of financial details
associated with the organization's scholarship programs.
