Think Pink. Give Green. Wear Blue. LEE NATIONAL DENIM DAY salutes America's fight against breast cancer by annually supporting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Debra Lanning, administrative support specialist in Dental Education, is coordinating IUSD's participation this year. About 35 percent of IUSD's students, staff, and faculty raised just under $2,000 in 2000, and Debra's hoping we can top that by at least 10 percent in 2001. For a minimum donation of just $5, you receive a pink ribbon pin that entitles you to wear blue jeans to work today. You must be wearing a pink ribbon in order to wear blue jeans. (And all infection control guidelines must be followed as usual.) For the first time this year, if you'd like to honor or pay tribute to the memory of someone in your life who has battled breast cancer, you can write that person's name on a ribbon that will be placed on an "In Honor Of, In Memory Of" ribbon board for display in the dental school's main lobby. Donations can be either cash or check, with checks payable to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The following campaign representatives are collecting the donations: basement--Amanda Marlett; lst floor--Pamela Elliott and Debra Lanning; 2nd floor--Claudette Maurer; 3rd floor--Anita Cook and Misty Areal; 4th floor--Kim Fields and Regina Einberger; 5th floor--Janice Warrick; OHRI--Beverly Spriggs; IU Hospital--Charity Key; and Regenstrief--Nicole Guerrettaz.

During the social hour/practice opportunity segment, some of the dentist participants will be using table-top displays to promote associate and partner opportunities in their offices. HALLOWEEN

People, Places & Things

ELECTIONS. Gail Williamson, professor of dental diagnostic sciences, has been elected to one of the 7 officer positions in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. She will serve a 4-year term as the Councilor for Academy Affairs. The new officers will be installed during the academy's annual session in Portland, Ore., this month.

Dr. Carl Andres, professor of prosthodontics, has been elected president of the Indianapolis District Dental Society. He assumed office in July.

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR. An article written by second-year dental student Matthew Hebert took 2nd Place honors in an annual competition sponsored by the American Academy of the History of Dentistry. Matthew's paper, titled "Joe Weber, DDS: Dental Practitioner Jumps to Extreme Adventure," chronicles an IUSD graduate's experiences as a BASE jumper. The award will be announced at the academy's annual meeting in Kansas City, Mo., this month.

LECTURE CIRCUIT. Dr. Michael Kowolik, professor of periodontics, gave an invited seminar in Guatemala last month to a group of dentists, physicians, and others including scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The seminar, titled "Oral and Systemic Disease Research in Guatemala," included a discussion of the need for, and a pathway for developing, postgraduate research training in Guatemala. Dr. Kowolik has conducted research in this Central American country for several years and has established collaborative ties with colleagues at Guatemala's La Universidad Mariano Galvez.

SCHOLARSHIPS. Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha has bestowed scholarships on second-year dental hygiene students Amanda Murphy and Brooke Spurgeon.

"YO WILL KNOW." "I overheard two first-year dental hygiene students commenting about something they weren't sure of," reads the nomination letter. "One told the other: 'Yo will know.' So you see, even newcomers realize immediately whom they can depend on for information and guidance."

The informative and guiding force referred to in that letter is Yvonne "Yo" Baynham, coordinator of the Dental Hygiene clinic. Her work ethic has been dazzling IUSD newcomers and long-timers alike for the past decade. Yo received the IUSD Staff Council's Staff Excellence Award in September--and with her award came pages and pages of the highest praise from her many nominators both within and outside of her department.

"Yo has one of the most demanding clinical staff positions at IUSD due to the sheer numbers of charts and patients in the clinic," writes another nominator. "She is responsible for all aspects of chart assignment in the QSI system.... Meanwhile, she serves as a triage person, performing receptionist duties, answering dozens of questions on the phone, and addressing last-minute requests by everyone imaginable. NOBODY knows or realizes what all she accomplishes on a daily basis, or the amount of work that she does."

The best employees seem to be master jugglers of their duties and professional interests, and that's certainly the case with Yo. She supports the school's efforts to recruit minority students, and she volunteers for community service through projects associated with IUSD and the National Dental Association. She has continued her own college education while working a full-time job and has taken advantage of training opportunities at the school, including a class for IUSD staff members who are learning Spanish to better serve the school's Spanish-speaking patients.

Yo's exceptional capabilities are complemented by her "friendliness and gregarious nature."

"Her contributions reach far beyond the Dental Hygiene clinic--she is an asset to the entire dental school," summarizes a nominator. "Yo embodies our vision of what it means to be an excellent employee, staff member, friend, and colleague."

FACULTY AWARDS. The Indiana Dental Association's annual faculty awards and a newly created IUSD award recognizing community service were presented during the Faculty Conference last month.

Dr. Charles Tomich, professor of oral pathology, received the IDA's Outstanding Teacher of the Year award for excellence in teaching during the 2000-2001 academic year. This award was announced in the June 2001 calendar as the highest of 7 awards bestowed on IUSD faculty. (The other 6 faculty received IUPUI Trustees Teaching Awards.)

The IDA's Outstanding Faculty of the Year award went to Dr. Timothy Carlson, professor of operative dentistry, for his continuous record of quality teaching, scholarly activity, and service.

After graduating from IUSD in 1978, Dr. Carlson spent the first two years of his dental career treating patients in a mission clinic in Haiti--an invaluable experience he would draw upon two decades later as the on-site faculty mentor for a group of IUSD students volunteering their services in Haiti through the school's new Alternative Spring Break.

Dr. Carlson joined the IUSD faculty in 1980, earning an MSD degree in operative dentistry in 1986. Throughout his career, he has provided outstanding instruction to dental and graduate dental students as a clinical teacher and lecturer. He is director of Comprehensive Care Clinic A and has made substantial contributions to the dental curriculum as a director of courses, modules, and rounds. From 1984 to 1991, he shared his enthusiasm for dentistry with children by directing the dental section of IUPUI's Young Scholars program, an annual two-week summer day-camp experience held on campus for talented middle-school aged kids.

Dr. Carlson is a former president of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators and a recipient of the academy's Clinician of the Year award. He is a past president of Theta Theta Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Since 1999, he has been serving as managing editor of the Academy of Operative Dentistry's journal, Operative Dentistry.

Dr. Carlson received an IUPUI Teaching Excellence Recognition Award (TERA) in 1998 and 1999. He was one of a small group of faculty who recently organized and led the new Alternative Spring Break, which was a tremendous success in its opening year. He will continue to lend his knowledge and expertise to the school's community outreach efforts and is expected to play an important role in further expansion and development of the school's international community service program.

The presentation of a newly created award was a surprise addition to the Faculty Conference in 2001. Dr. Brian Sanders, associate professor of pediatric dentistry and director of the Riley Dental Clinic, received the first Johnson Public Health Faculty Community Service Award for his outstanding commitment to IUSD-linked community-based oral health services. The award is named for Dr. Donald Johnson, a 1956 IU dental graduate who devoted his career to the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Johnson is retired and living in Carmel, Ind.; he is a longtime supporter of IUSD's community outreach endeavors.

For several years, Dr. Sanders has been directing an effort to provide oral healthcare to Amish children in Shipshewana and in other northern Indiana communities that have large Amish populations. Cost of treatment and access to dental offices are challenges that often stand between the Amish and routine dental care. Dental decay is a common problem in part because many Amish homes in that part of the state use well water, which contains minimal amounts of fluoride.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Sanders and a small team of volunteer IUSD faculty, staff, and students began making routine trips to Shipshewana, first to identify children in need and then to provide their treatment in the Elkhart dental office of another volunteer, Gregory Robbins (DDS'85). In 1997, Dr. Sanders and colleague Dr. Amy Shapiro were awarded a grant that supported these dental services and also provided start-up funds to build the Shipshewana dental clinic that now serves as the program's site. Dr. Sanders continues to serve as the clinic's director and as a faculty mentor for the clinic's student volunteers. Last year, he obtained grants from the Goshen Health Systems and LaGrange County Community Foundation to further supplement the program.

Serving in the Amish dental clinic is one of many ways Dr. Sanders has been involved with the community. Throughout most of the '90s, he participated in Camp Riley's dental program for disabled children and adults and served as a faculty adviser for IUSD's annual dental health fair. He has made himself available to the media on several occasions to support charitable programs and to inform the public of new trends in patient care.
