Recognition Month for IUSD's
Research Staff

Time to Roll Up Your Sleeve. If you didn't get over to the IUPUI Health Service Clinic for your ANNUAL TB TEST in October, you have one more month to take care of this requirement. The only IUSD faculty, staff, and students who are exempt from fall 2006 testing are those who have been tested in the past 12 months. The clinic is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Thursdays, when it opens at 9. Remember, your test must be evaluated within 48-72 hours, so don't go to the clinic for the test on Thursday (or near closing time on any day).

Time to Jam the Jaguars Bus. IUPUI's HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE has kicked off and will run till Nov. 21. In the past, the campus has received an outstanding response to this annual drive from the IU dental school's students and employees â€" let's make the IUSD collection boxes overflow this year. Canned fruits, vegetables, and meals are needed, as are cereal, coffee, and crackers; bread, rice, and pasta; and personal hygiene items. Collection boxes are prominently located on floors one through four at the school.

8th annual IUSD SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON at University Place Hotel brings together students who are receiving scholarships during academic year 2006-2007 and the donors and other friends of the school who have made these scholarships possible. By invitation.

Congratulations to all the scholarship recipients, including two dental students who are receiving newly created awards this year:

Benjamin Ricketts ('07) has been named the first recipient of the Dr. Marlin R. and Mary J. Inman Family Scholarship, which has been established by one of the couple's sons, IU dental graduate Joe Inman (DDS'80) and his wife, Lin Inman, of Sylvania, Ohio. Retired Boonville, Ind., dentist Dr. Marlin Inman graduated from IUSD in 1946. Marlin and Mary Inman have five children, including three sons with IU dental degrees: Joe now specializes in children's dentistry near Toledo, Ohio, and his brothers, Jed (DDS'78) and Jon (DDS'84), practice general dentistry in Boonville and Williamsport, Ind., respectively.

Cratisa Caldwell ('10) is receiving the first Sylvia Levinson Memorial Scholarship, which was established in 2006 by her son, Steven Levinson, of Studio City, Calif. Mrs. Levinson raised her family not far from the IUPUI campus. She is also the mother of an IUSD graduate who has long been memorialized by an IU scholarship: Harvey Levinson (DDS'60), a practitioner in Sherman Oaks, Calif., who died in 1986. The Harvey G. Levinson Memorial Scholarship was created a year after his death by his brother, Steven, and an uncle, Irving Newmark (DDS'45), also of California.

People, Places, and Things

THANK YOU! On Oct. 20, we donned our blue jeans, flaunted our pinkest articles of clothing, and, most important, gave generously to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. "A big thanks goes out to everyone who donated," says Debra Lanning, event coordinator. "Thanks to all of you, we collected $1,340 this year. Great job, everyone!"

IDA/COMMUNITY HEALTH AWARDS. Congratulations to the two professors and three staff members who received awards during IUSD's faculty and staff conferences in October:

Dr. Judith Chin, associate professor of pediatric dentistry, and Dr. Margherita Fontana, associate professor of preventive and community dentistry, received awards from the Indiana Dental Association.

Dr. Chin was named OUTSTANDING TEACHER, an award that annually recognizes an exceptional record of service based on the previous academic year (2005-2006). Dr. Chin recently accepted an appointment in the Department of Oral Facial Development after serving as a teacher and researcher in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry since 2000. Her busy teaching schedule has involved the predoctoral, dental hygiene, and graduate programs, and has covered instruction in the lecture halls, labs, clinics, and PBL sessions. The teaching evaluations she receives from her students are "superb," says the awards committee. As a teacher who is herself extensively involved in community dentistry projects and volunteerism, Dr. Chin sets for students an excellent example of the invaluable and varied roles dental professionals can play in their communities. In 2005, Dr. Chin received three honors: the Johnson Public Health Faculty Community Service Award, a Trustees Teaching Award from IUPUI, and faculty membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor dental society. In September of this year, she was the primary author on an article published by the Journal of the American Dental Association titled "Internal Contamination of Air-Driven Low-Speed Handpieces and Attached Prophy Angles."

The OUTSTANDING FACULTY MEMBER award went to Dr. Fontana in recognition of the impressive body of work she has compiled since joining the tenure-track faculty in 1998. She is a past recipient of the IDA's Outstanding Teacher award. Like Dr. Chin, Dr. Fontana is heavily involved in most components of teaching at the dental school, having a significant impact on the education of many of the school's students. As a research mentor to MSD students and others, she draws upon her extensive experience as a scientist who has been funded by foundations, private companies, and the federal government. At last count, she had contributed 18 research papers, 10 review articles, and more than 150 research abstracts to the dental literature. The Journal of the American Dental Association chose to feature one of Dr. Fontana's articles as its cover story in September 2006; she co-wrote "Assessing Patients' Caries Risk" with Dr. Domenick Zero, associate dean for Research. Dr. Fontana received the International Association for Dental Research's Basil G. Bibby Cariology Award in 1999 and is currently president-elect of the IADR Cariology Group. Her teaching efforts at IUSD have garnered three Trustees Teaching Awards. Last year, the IUSD Alumni Association presented Dr. Fontana with the Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.

The Johnson Public Health Staff Community Service Award was bestowed â€" uniquely â€" on a married couple this year: Andrew â€" better known as A.J. â€" and Margie Beiswanger. A.J. is a research technician in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, and Margie is the curriculum and assessment specialist in Dental Education. The Beiswangers were honored for their ongoing commitment as volunteers for Meals on Wheels. Once a month, instead of heading off to their own lunch at noontime they deliver nutritious meals to residents of Crestwood Village West, assisting eight to 14 clients on each trip. "It varies from month to month," says Margie, who doesn't recall exactly when she started volunteering but says it was at least 12 years ago. "Some of the clients have been part of the route since before I began, and we know them well." A.J. and Margie are also on call for Meals on Wheels when it has a driver shortage. "There have been many times over the years when they've called that morning and asked if there was any way we could deliver that day," says Margie. "If we can fit it into the day's schedule â€" we're there!" A.J. and Margie have found an effective and rewarding way to contribute to the community that complements their busy schedules as IUSD employees. Their longtime records of service to the school, by the way, together add up to 41 years! Margie has been with the school since 1986, and A.J. since 1987.

Usually, a Johnson Public Health Faculty Community Service Award is also given to a teacher at the faculty retreat, but this year special recognition was paid instead to staff member Susan Crum, the school's publications director, who received a Johnson Public Health Outstanding Community Service Award. The award acknowledges Susan's commitment, as managing editor of the IUSD Alumni Bulletin, to keeping graduates of our school and others abreast of IUSD's highly successful and ever-expanding community service-learning program. Susan was cited by the awards committee for "fostering understanding of community-based oral health programs and service-learning through her publications." She began contributing articles to the bulletin in 1979 and was named manager editor of the publication in 1986. She's been with the school for 32 years. The Alumni Bulletin circulates to more than 10,000 graduates residing throughout the U.S. and in about 30 other countries.

LIFETIME ACHIEVER. Congratulations are also in order for Professor Emeritus Arden Christen, national authority on smoking cessation and former acting chair of the Department of Oral Biology, who has received a lifetime achievement award from the Indiana Public Health Foundation for distinguished service in advancing health in the Hoosier state. He was honored at the Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement Awards dinner in October. Dr. Christen has dedicated much of his career, including his 24 years on the IU faculty, to issues related to nicotine dependence. In the 1980s he contributed substantially to research studies that led to FDA approval of two key products widely used in nicotine-replacement therapy, Nicorette and Nicoderm. In 1990, he served as co-author with then-U.S. Surgeon General J. Everett Koop on the Surgeon General's Report addressing the health benefits of smoking cessation. In 1997, he and Dr. Stephen Jay of the IU School of Medicine teamed up as co-directors of the IU Nicotine Dependence Program. Dr. Christen retired in 2004, but has continued to volunteer his services part time.

4,000-YEAR-OLD DENTISTS: Paging Dr. Mry, Dr. Msw, and Dr. Ka. A "DDS" or "DMD" that follows a person's name is our modern-day tip-off that the party is a dentist by profession. In ancient Egypt, two hieroglyphs -- an eye over a tusk -- provided the same information. A recent tomb robbery gone bad near the pyramids in Saqqara led to the discovery of the graves of three royal dentists. The proximity of their graves to the Step Pyramid of King Djoser is a clue that oral healthcare providers were held in high regard by Egypt's ancient kings.
