People, Places & Things
ADEA DELEGATE. Patricia Capps, director of the Dental Assisting
Program, was recently elected as one of two persons who will serve as an
at-large delegate for the national Council of Allied Dental Program Directors in
the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) House of Delegates. The
position begins during ADEA's annual session in March 2006.
NEW FELLOWS HONORED IN PHILLY. Congratulations to the following IUSD faculty
members, who were inducted at conferences last month in Philadelphia as fellows
of two of Dentistry's most prestigious organizations.
New fellows of the International College of Dentists are Dr. James
Hartsfield Jr., professor of oral facial genetics and orthodontics (School
of Dentistry) and of medical and molecular genetics (School of Medicine); Dr.
Vanchit John, associate professor of periodontics; Dr. James Jones,
professor of pediatric dentistry; and Dr. James Macri, volunteer
assistant professor of orthodontics.
New fellows of the American College of Dentists are Dr. Michael Gradeless,
adjunct clinical assistant professor of restorative dentistry; Dr. Gregory
Phillips, clinical assistant professor of periodontics; Dr. O.H. Rigsbee
III, clinical assistant professor of orthodontics; and Dr. James Weddell,
associate professor of pediatric dentistry.
IUSD was especially honored this year by the recognition the American College
of Dentists bestowed on Dr. Lawrence Garetto, associate dean for Dental
Education and professor of orthodontics. Dr. Garetto was one of only two persons
in the nation to be inducted into the college as an honorary fellow in 2005.
IUSD alumnus and former pediatric dentistry faculty member Dr. B. Charles
Kerkhove Jr. completed his term as national president of the American
College of Dentists at the close of the ACD's Philadelphia conference.
MEDIA MOMENT. Dr. William Neal, visiting clinical assistant professor
of hospital dentistry and director of the Cottage Corner Dental Clinic, served
as a television spokesman in October for the 2005 Harvest of Health Fest, held
at Cottage Corner Community Health Center on Oct. 29. Dr. Neal was interviewed
for the evening news by health reporter Anne Marie Tiernon of WTHR TV,
which annually sponsors the fair with Wishard Health Services. Community
participants received free flu shots and a variety of free dental and medical
health screenings.
WESTSIDE HEALTH FAIR. IUSD's student volunteers helped make yet another
October health fair in Indianapolis a success, this one at the Westside
Community Health Center. Students of dentistry joined local members of the
American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and other healthcare professionals
on Oct. 15 at a community event kicking off AMSA's National Primary Care Week.
This fall's event was sponsored locally by the Internal Medicine Student
Interest Group. Dentistry's students provided patient education and oral
screenings at the center, which services residents of the Haughville
neighborhood and surrounding area. Participants included second-year dental
hygiene student Tawnya Beckering and dental students Mark Klopenstine,
fourth year; Lauren Weddell, third year; Jennifer Waller-Smith, Nicole
Weddell, and Amber Wickstrom, second year; and Matthew Rasche,
first year. Dr. Joan Kowolik, assistant professor of pediatric dentistry,

ADEA INTERIM MEETINGS. During the month of November, the American Dental
Education Association is holding a number of interim meetings in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. Some of the IUSD faculty we've heard about who are
participating include:
Three professors who are on the program at the ADEA Dean's Conference, titled
"Reformation of Dental Education: Deconstructing Curriculum and Rethinking
Boards": Dr. Joan Kowolik, assistant professor of pediatric dentistry; Dr.
Laura Romito-Cera, visiting associate professor of oral biology; and Gail
Williamson, professor of dental diagnostic sciences. Also attending are Dean
Lawrence Goldblatt, national vice president of the Council of Deans;
Associate Dean Lawrence Garetto; Dr. Edwin Parks, professor of
dental diagnostic sciences; and IUSD's representative to ADEA's Council of
Faculties, Dr. Brian Sanders, a professor of pediatric dentistry.
There will also be an ADEA Council of Sections and Council of Students Joint
Interim Meeting, working with the same theme of education reformation. IUSD
faculty contributing to the Pre-Session Taskforce Workshop on Competencies and
Foundation Knowledge are Drs. Romito-Cera and Parks as well as Prof. Williamson,
who is serving as the Council of Sections Administrative Board Chairman in
Attendance.
Following the pre-session is the joint meeting, which will be moderated by
