AMERITECH FUNDS IUSD PROJECT. Dr. Lawrence
Garetto has been informed by the IU Office of the Vice President for
Information Technology that a dental school project proposal he and others have
submitted will receive a grant of $15,000 from the IU Ameritech Fellows Program,
which will provide the funding in concert with a matching award from the school.
Titled "Development of a Web-based Discovery Tool for Enhancement of Dental
Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Programs," the project is being
undertaken by Dr. Garetto; Dr. Karen Yoder, director of community
dentistry; and John Gosney, director of technology services. They will
employ a tool developed by Plumb Design called ThinkMap to design a program that
enables users to link their existing knowledge base with wide-ranging knowledge
retrieved from an "information store" database. The ThinkMap
application will be designed to complement the school's efforts in
problem-based learning and to enhance our students' ability to access
information outside the traditional classroom, such as when they are engaging in
community outreach programs locally or abroad. IU's third- and fourth-year
dental students are the primary focus group for this project, but the overall
goal is to create a technological tool that will also serve faculty and staff
who participate in service-learning and community outreach programs, dental and
medical professionals pursuing lifelong learning goals through IUSD's division
of continuing education, and students and educators in the community at large
who have an interest in exploring healthcare-related issues by way of a system
that has a PBL design methodology. The project gets under way this fall and will
be designed and implemented during the next year.
