PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR INFANT LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT STUDY. The IU School of
Medicine's Department of Otolaryngology is seeking infants between 5 and 10
months of age to participate in groundbreaking language development research.
The research involves both infants who are deaf and use cochlear implants and
those who have normal hearing. The department is currently recruiting infants
who have normal hearing. You and your child may participate in one or more
45-minute sessions, arranged at your convenience. Testing is non-invasive and
parents are with their children at all times. Participants are paid $10 per
session. Please contact the Infant Speech Perception Lab for more details
(278-1350; babytalk@iupui.edu;

MEDIA MOMENT FOR OHRI. "Every time you brush your teeth, you owe a debt of
gratitude to some IUPUI researchers," Bob Donaldson, a Fox 59 (WXIN)
television news anchor, told his audience on October 14.
He was referring to faculty, staff, and students of the Oral Health Research
Institute, which was featured on Mr. Donaldson's "Hidden Indiana" segment of the
Sunday night news. A Fox cameraman roamed in and out of the Institute's myriad
laboratories and clinical areas while Mr. Donaldson interviewed Institute
director Dr. Domenick Zero and others about many of the clinical trials,
laboratory studies, and product-testing projects currently under way in the
33-year-old Institute, which has long been known as the "House that Crest
Built." Mr. Donaldson explained to his viewers that the Institute was built with
royalties from Procter & Gamble's sale of Crest. (Dental school researcher Dr.
Joseph Muhler and IU chemistry professors Drs. Harry Day and
William Nebergall held the patent on the first successful stannous fluoride
formula, which became the active decay-preventing agent in Crest toothpaste in
the 1950s. IU made a contractual agreement with P&G to use the patent.)
"The technology developed here goes way beyond brushing and flossing," said
Mr. Donaldson, who then mentioned some of the latest work the Institute has been
doing to detect dental caries in the earliest stages of its development.
He described the OHRI scientists as being committed to an oral health
research effort that "improves not only your teeth, but your whole quality of
life."
Another on-camera interview that made it into the TV segment was one with
Bruce Schemehorn, the Institute's associate director of Contract Testing
Research.
FACULTY MEMBER RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD. Dr. Joseph Bidwell, associate
professor of anatomy and periodontics, has been notified that he will receive an
award in 2002 from the American Association of Anatomists. The R.R. Bensley
Award recognizes "rising stars" who have made distinguished contributions to the
advancement of anatomy through discovery, ingenuity, and publications in the
field of cell biology. The award will be presented in April at a meeting of the
Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB) in New Orleans,
La., where Dr. Bidwell has also been asked to present a seminar on his work.
With two four-year grants from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Bidwell
and his research team are currently studying a family of proteins for the role
these proteins may play in the regulation of collagen expression. Dr. Bidwell
and other cell biology researchers are hopeful that the basic research being
done in this field today will eventually lead to the discovery of therapies that
can help fight debilitating bone diseases such as osteoporosis. Earlier this
year, Dr. Bidwell moved his laboratory from facilities on the second floor of
the dental school to the Medical Center's Van Nuys Medical Science building, but
he continues to hold joint appointments on both the medical and dental
faculties.
