•••••
Military Maneuvers. By the time May 9 rolls around at the IU dental
school each year, the sweet sound of "Pomp and Circumstance" is never more than
a few days away. But in 1942, May 9 was actually the first day of classes for a
group of first-year IU dental students, who found themselves in the unique
position of training for dentistry and World War II all at the same time.
Under the Indiana University War Service Plan, the normal 4-year dental
education program was set aside and replaced by an accelerated curriculum
requiring students to finish in just 2 and 2/3 years (3 semesters per year). The
school started a second group of "freshmen" in January 1943.
The dental school didn't cut corners when it came to the DDS course of study,
which was the only type of degree offered in those days. Students had to fulfill
the same number of clock hours as their peacetime counterparts. To squeeze
everything in, classes were held on Saturdays, and most vacation and holiday
breaks were eliminated.
Local draft boards were not inclined to issue military service deferments to
dental students. In 1942, 97.5% of our students had reserve commissions as
ensigns in the Navy or as second lieutenants in the Army. A year later, though,
their status was changed to active duty as Army privates or Navy apprentice
seamen. All wore their uniforms to school. Army students reported for reveille
at 7:30 each morning. They juggled their dental classes with military classes,
evening drills, and locker inspections.
Skipping class or sleeping in was out of the question, since this was the
equivalent of being A.W.O.L.
The Navy maintained its IU medical center office at the dental school, in the
room now occupied by Dr. Robert Kasberg and Carol Ann Bauer of
Student Affairs. The Navy's lecture hall was located in the area now used for
IUSD's Faculty Private Practice.
This wartime maneuver in dental education resulted in 2 DDS Classes of 1942
and 2 DDS Classes of 1944.
Fourth-year dental student James Vanes of the DDS Class of 1979, now
of LaPorte, Ind., wrote a prize-winning senior essay on this topic for the Fall
1979 IUSD Alumni Bulletin titled "The School of Dentistry in Times of
War."
10 (Thurs.)
Indiana Section of the American Association for Dental Research presents
CANCER PREVENTION AND CONTROL RESEARCH AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY, by Dr. Victoria
Champion, distinguished professor and associate dean for Research, IU School
of Nursing; noon-1 p.m. in DS S116. Everyone welcome.
Special presentation SALIWELL: INTRAORAL ELECTROSTIMULATOR TO TREAT DRY
MOUTH, by Dr. Andy Wolff, president of Saliwell Medical Systems Ltd.,
Israel; 3-4 p.m. in DS S116. Hosted by Dr. Susan Zunt, chair of the
Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology. All faculty, staff, and
students welcome -- please email Julie LeHunt (jlehunt@iupui.edu) with
your plans to attend to ensure a sufficient number of handouts are available.
Program offers 1 CE credit to qualified attendees.
10-12 Thurs.-Sat.)
In addition to their upcoming annual session, which is being held a bit later
this month, Indiana's dental assistants are also being offered an excellent
opportunity to participate in a national meeting without leaving their home
turf: Indianapolis is host city to the PROFESSIONAL DENTAL ASSISTING (PDA)
meeting, held at the Marriott Downtown Hotel. According to Kevin Henry,
managing editor of Dental Economics, the PDA meeting is the first
national conference designed specifically for the dental assistant. "The
conference is geared toward dental assistants, both front- and back-office," he
says. PDA offers three days of hands-on courses, lectures, networking
opportunities, and an exhibits hall with exhibitors and companies who are
focused exclusively upon meeting the needs of the dental assistant. For more
information about the program, including fees and registration, go to
www.professionaldentalassisting.com.

Dental Association Dr. R. Dale Lentz as this year's Post-Commencement
speaker. Dr. Lentz earned his dental degree in 1967 and completed IU's oral and
maxillofacial surgery residency in 1970. He recently retired from his surgery
practice in Indianapolis. "As a brilliant practitioner and leader in the dental
community, Dr. Lentz has been sincerely committed to both his patients and his
colleagues," Dean Lawrence Goldblatt said in announcing this year's
speaker. "In addition, he has demonstrated a special commitment to the students
of Indiana University School of Dentistry by establishing himself as a
philanthropist in dental education in the Hoosier state."
Hoosier Mama? Turner Classic Movies salutes MOTHER'S DAY by featuring
actress Irene Dunne's beloved 1948 film "I Remember Mama," today at 5:30
p.m. Dunne moved to Indiana at age 12 and grew up in Madison. In 1928, she
married Dr. Francis Dennis Griffin, a New York dentist. Their apparently
un-Hollywood-like union lasted until his death in 1965. Dunne died in 1990.

FAREWELLS TO FIVE FULLTIMERS are on tap this afternoon as retirement plans
loom on the horizon for Dr. Carl Andres, professor of prosthodontics
(July retirement); Dr. E. Brady Hancock, chair of the Department of
Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs (July); Dr. Chris Miller, IUSD
executive associate dean (July); Dr. B. Keith Moore, professor of dental
materials (October); and Dr. Byron Olson, professor of oral biology
(July). Dr. Miller was the first of the five to arrive, back on July 1, 1970.
And in the 37 years that have followed since, these gentlemen have collectively
devoted 151 years of outstanding service to the students of the IU School of
Dentistry. Their individual contributions and accomplishments have gone far in
helping to give shape and substance to our clinical, didactic, and research
programs, and they have also provided invaluable guidance administratively.
Please join Dean Lawrence Goldblatt in celebrating the careers of these

People, Places, and Things
SCHOLARSHIP. Congratulations to dental assisting student Christina Orcutt,
who is the recipient of a $500 Juliette A. Southard/Oral-B Laboratories Dental
Assisting Education Scholarship from the American Dental Assistants Association.
The scholarship also provides Christina with two years of free membership in the
ADAA.
K. LIFORD IN THE LIMELIGHT. April's PASS IT ON award for dental assistants
went to Karen Liford, coordinator of Comprehensive Care Clinic A. Karen
has been a member of the IUSD team since 1979. She was chosen as April's award
recipient in part because she was such a great help to dental assisting
administrator Patricia Huff during the recent round of the North East
Regional Boards, says Patricia Capps, clinical associate professor of
dental assisting. Karen also provides outstanding guidance to dental assisting
students when they are assigned in Clinic A. "Karen quietly but efficiently does
her job without wanting to single herself out for praise," says Prof. Capps.
Praise is nevertheless in order for this outstanding employee: Congratulations,
Karen!
IUSD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HONORS DRS. LANCASTER, ZERO. During the school's 2007
Research Day program in April, IUSD Alumni Association President George Zundo
(DDS'80), of Danville, Ill., announced the recipients of the 2007 IUSDAA
Distinguished Faculty Awards:
The Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching went to Dr. Henry Lancaster
Jr., clinical assistant professor of oral medicine. After joining the
IU faculty in 1998, this Washington University dental grad quickly earned a
reputation as an outstanding, dedicated, and popular teacher. He had arrived at
IU after completing a three-year oral medicine fellowship at the National
Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The IU dental classes of 2002, 2003, and
2005 elected Dr. Lancaster to serve as one of their graduation hooders, and the
Class of 2004 honored him with the opportunity to present the class's keynote
address at graduation. Dr. Lancaster accepted the directorship of Comprehensive
Care Clinic D in 2004. He is a past director of the Department of Oral
Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology's Center for Oral Diagnosis and Treatment and
the Regenstrief Dental Clinic. By taking on the additional (and time-consuming)
role of current IUSD Faculty Council president, Dr. Lancaster is pursuing yet
another avenue that demonstrates his commitment to the school and its students.
He is a past recipient of the Indiana Dental Association's Teacher of the Year
Award.
Dr. Domenick Zero, associate dean for research, accepted the
Distinguished Faculty Award for Research. A Georgetown University dental grad
with a master's degree from the University of Rochester, Dr. Zero left his
position as the Eastman Dental Center's program director of oral sciences in
1999 to accept appointments at IU as chair of the Department of Preventive and
Community Dentistry and director of the Oral Health Research Institute. Just
three years later, he acquired yet another major role at IUSD as associate dean
for research. In the deanship, Dr. Zero oversees an energetic, talented and
diverse team of researchers who obtained more than $6.9 million in extramural
research funding during fiscal 2005-2006. He is a past chair of the American
Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs and has been engaged in other
professional affiliations with the Food and Drug Administration, National
Institutes of Health, International Organization for Standardization, and
private industry. As an internationally recognized scholar, Dr. Zero has
published 50 peer-reviewed research papers, served as the principal investigator
on more than 85 research grants or contracts, and given more than 100 invited
presentations all over the world.
