Pomp and Circumstance (and Some Comic Relief?) Graduates of the IU-Bloomington campus will be addressed by renowned film producer and comic-book authority Michael Uslan during commencement exercises today at Assembly Hall. Uslan is best known as the man who staged the "big screen" comeback for the comic book and TV superhero Batman. Uslan executive produced 1989's Batman movie (the version with Michael Keaton as the "caped crusader") and all of the sequels, including last year's critically acclaimed Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale. IU has lots of reasons to be proud of Uslan: He holds three IU degrees, including one in law (1976) from Bloomington's Law School, and he made history during his days as an IU faculty member.

"In addition to delighting the American public with his films and books, Michael is both an academic innovator and a great benefactor of IU," said IU President Adam Herbert. "In 1971, he taught the nation's first accredited course on comic books at IU. His gift to the Lilly Library of more than 30,000 comics and graphic novels provides scholars insights into 21st-century popular culture and graphic design. We are honored to welcome him back to his alma mater." There's more about Uslan's upcoming visit to Bloomington at http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/3286.html.

Aviation Legend Also Taught at Purdue. Seventy-four years ago this weekend, Amelia Earhart flew solo across the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first woman (and second person) to do so. On that journey she also set records for the fastest Atlantic crossing (13 hours, 30-40 minutes) and the longest distance flown by a woman. In 1935, Earhart joined the Purdue University faculty as a consultant in the department for the study of careers for women. She was a career counselor and adviser in aeronautics at Purdue until 1937, the year she disappeared during an attempt at a round-the-world flight. Today, Purdue University houses the world's largest collection of Earhart papers and memorabilia.

STATE, NATIONAL AWARDS BESTOWED ON DENTAL ASSISTING STUDENTS. Congratulations to two dental assisting students who have recently received scholarships from dental assisting organizations. Kyra Hurley was one of three students from programs across the state to be selected for a scholarship from the Indiana Dental Assistants Association. And Shanna Cook was chosen from applicants nationwide to receive a Juliette A. Southard/Oral-B Laboratories Scholarship from the American Dental Assistants Association. The scholarship is named for the ADAA's founder.

IN THE PAGES OF THE PREMIER ISSUE. The IU School of Dentistry has been notified by the Institute of Physics (IOP) that a manuscript written by Dr. Robert Karlinsey and his research team has been published in the premier issue of the IOP's journal, Bioinspiration & Biomimetics.

Titled "Nucleation and Growth of Apatite by a Self-Assembled Polycrystalline Bioceramic," the paper is available online in full-text format (unrestricted access for 2006): http://www.iop.org/EJ/abstract/1748-3190/1/1/002.

Dr. Karlinsey has been a visiting clinical assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry for the past year. An image from one of his projects was featured on the cover of this year's Research Day monograph (http://www.iusd.iupui.edu/?fwlink=rd2006). In his research, he is working on developing nanomaterials that can be used to remineralize dentin and enamel that has been damaged by dental caries or erosion.

Dr. Karlinsey's co-authors on the paper published by the IOP are Clif Duhn, a research technician in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry; and Keewook Yi, a former research analyst at the Oral Health Research Institute who is now with the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Seoul National University.

To learn more about this new journal and the IOP, visit the Bioinspiration and Biomimetics Website (http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/bioinsp).

GRANT BRINGS OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG SCHOLAR. Last year, we announced that Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier, assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry, was awarded a grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to work on developing objective methods for use in diagnosing fluorosis. She has now received a supplement to that grant from the NIDCR to promote diversity in health-related research. The supplement has made it possible for Dr. Martinez-Mier to invite a young scholar to IU to spend a year conducting research under the primary mentorship of Dr. Martinez-Mier and Dr. Armando Soto, visiting assistant scientist in preventive and community dentistry.

Veronique Mathews, a recent baccalaureate graduate of Fort Valley State University in Georgia whose career interests lie in dentistry and dental research, began her internship on April 15. During the year ahead she will receive experience in working with both long-established and experimental techniques being studied at the Oral Health Research Institute for their validity in diagnosing fluorosis. The entire team working on the parent study will be involved in various stages of Veronique's mentoring program, including faculty members Drs. Hafsteinn Eggertsson, Masatoshi Ando, and Domenick Zero; and research technician Christine Buckley. "Ms. Mathews will have a wealth of training and education opportunities available to her," says Dr. Martinez-Mier.

A NOD FROM THE TRUSTEES. Congratulations to the following School of Dentistry faculty members, who recently received Trustees Teaching Awards from the trustees of Indiana University in recognition of teaching excellence: Steven Blanchard, assistant professor of periodontics; Timothy Carlson, professor of operative dentistry; Lorinda Coan, clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene; Margherita Fontana, associate professor of preventive and community dentistry; Joseph Legan, clinical associate professor of endodontics; and Jeffrey Platt, Ralph W. Phillips Scholar in Dental Materials and associate professor of dental materials.

AWARD NOMINEES. In celebration of Women's History Month in March, five women at IUPUI received Outstanding Women Leadership Awards during an event the IUPUI Office for Women co-sponsored with Campus and Community Life. An additional 53 women were also nominated, including three employees from the School of Dentistry: Dr. Judith Chin, assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry; Dr. Karen Yoder, the dental school's director of Community Dentistry; and Diana Yates, clinical coordinator, Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs.

MEDIA MOMENTS. The South Bend Tribune has once again turned to Dr. Susan Zunt for her expert advice on matters related to oral pathology. Dr. Zunt, chair of the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology, was most recently interviewed for two reports published this spring. Tribune correspondent Patty Levine talked to Dr. Zunt about aphthous ulcers for a March 22 article, and staff writer David Rumbach contacted Dr. Zunt for an April 12 article he wrote on the effectiveness of ViziLite as a new instrument for detecting oral cancer.

DRS. SRINIVASAN, HANCOCK ARE NEWEST RECIPIENTS OF IUSDAA AWARDS. During the school's 2006 Research Day program last month, two faculty members were announced as the new recipients of the Indiana University School of Dentistry Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Awards.

Dr. Mythily Srinivasan, assistant professor of oral pathology, accepted the association's Distinguished Faculty Award for Research. The recognition comes early on in Dr. Srinivasan's IU career, which began in 2002. She joined the IU faculty after acquiring a PhD degree in microbiology and immunology, postdoctoral training in pathology, and research associate experience at Ohio State University. She also holds a dental degree and a master's in oral pathology and microbiology from the University of Nagpur, India.

Dr. Srinivasan directs the Cancer Biology and Immunology Laboratory in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology. One of Dr. Srinivasan's key interests as a scientist is in the area of chronic inflammatory diseases. She is currently working on research funded since 2004 by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America that involves the development of a novel therapeutic agent for inflammatory bowel disease.

She is also the principal investigator on two other studies, one funded till 2007 by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, and another funded till 2008 by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. More than a dozen of Dr. Srinivasan's research articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Srinivasan has shown much promise in her young career, and she has been recognized repeatedly for excellence in research in the past few years. She has received awards from the Arthritis National Research Foundation, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. And in 2005, she received a Junior Faculty Award from the American Association of Immunologists.

Dr. E. Brady Hancock, professor of periodontics, received the association's Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. Dr. Hancock has been serving IU as both a teacher and administrator for 19 years.

He holds a dental degree from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in periodontics from IU. After completing a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy, he was appointed chair in 1987 of IU's Department of Periodontics, which was expanded and renamed the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs in 1993.

During his IU career Dr. Hancock has taught dental, dental hygiene, and graduate dental students; his work with graduate students included a stint from 1988 to 1994 as director of the Periodontics Graduate Program. His notable achievements in dentistry and in the specialty of periodontics have helped build an outstanding foundation for his role as an educator. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a former director (1994-1999) and co-chair (1998-1999) of that board, a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the American Academy of Periodontology, and a past president of the Indiana Society of Periodontists.

Dr. Hancock's impact on dental education has a long reach. In addition to faithfully serving the students of IUSD, he has built an impressive record in the past decade as a visiting professor overseas. He has held visiting professorships at eight universities and institutes in Japan and Thailand.

He also demonstrated a special commitment to promoting educational opportunities for dental professionals in the Hoosier state by accepting an extra administrative assignment for 15 months, through March 2006, as the school's interim director of Continuing Education.
