NEW DENTAL ASSISTANTS AWARD GOES TO SONYA LOWHORN. Staff member Sonya Lowhorn is the first dental assistant to receive a new award created exclusively for the assisting staff. The Pass It On Award was presented to Sonya, a dental assistant in the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, on April 14.

According to Patricia Huff, IUSD's dental assistant administrator, the award recognizes full-time dental assistants whose efforts "above and beyond" are reported to Pat by way of nomination e-mail messages. Pat will collect and maintain nominations on an ongoing basis and draw an award recipient's name four times a year.

It was Octavia McIlwain, a dental assistant in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology, who witnessed Sonya's special act of "tenderness, encouragement, and patience" while Sonya was taking films late in the day on a patient with a disability.

"The next day, I asked her how it went with her patient," Octavia explained in her nomination letter. "Sonya was so upbeat and excited that she was able to get the films. I asked her how late she was here, and she said until after 5:30, which caused her to be late for a class she's taking at the Mary Cable building. Sonya never mentioned this to anyone but me. Sonya is always putting others before herself."

In addition to an award certificate, Sonya received Bath & Body lotion as well as a $25 Bath & Body gift certificate.

Whenever you observe one of our dental assisting staff making a special effort in patient care or in helping faculty, staff, or students, please PASS IT ON to Pat Huff (phuff@iupui.edu).

FACULTY EXCELLENCE, WITH A TOUCH OF ‘SAN ANTONE.' Although the IUSD Research Day awards were announced in April, we'd like to tell you a bit more about the two professors who received the IUSD Alumni Association's annual faculty awards during this event. The 2004 recipients have something in common -- they both arrived at IU after serving in positions at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dr. Donald Newell, professor of periodontics, received the IUSDAA's Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. He joined the IU faculty in 1989 after teaching for several years on the dental faculty at San Antonio. He is also retired from the U.S. Army.

He holds a dental degree and an oral histology master's degree from the University of Illinois, where he also completed a residency in periodontics. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a past president of the Midwest Society of Periodontology, and a fellow of the American College of Dentists.

Dr. Newell directed the school's graduate periodontics program from 1994 to 2003. His wide-ranging contributions to the school's predoctoral and graduate teaching programs include many laboratory, clinic, and didactic courses as well as service on more than 40 graduate student thesis committees. His role as an educator often extends beyond the parameters of the school's degree programs -- he has given more than 70 presentations in the U.S., Canada, and Germany.

Dr. Dominique Galli, assistant professor of oral biology, received the alumni association's Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.

After earning a PhD degree in microbiology from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany, Dr. Galli completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the San Antonio branch of the University of Texas. She came to IU as a research associate in the Department of Oral Biology in 1996, and accepted her current appointment in 2000 after serving for two years as a visiting professor.

She is the principal investigator of a $1.3 million NIH-funded study on plasmid biology of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, a bacterium associated with periodontal disease. Dr. Galli is also conducting a two-year study of a genetic tool that would allow bacterial gene transfer to be monitored by fluorescence microscopy. She has contributed refereed research articles to several publications, including the Journal of Bacteriology, Molecular Microbiology, and Plasmid, among others. She is an associate member of the IU Graduate Faculty.

ADA APPOINTMENTS. Prof. Patricia Capps, director of the Dental Assisting Program, has been selected for a one-year term as a consultant to the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation for the section on dental assisting education. Dr. Eric Everett has been appointed by the ADA's Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations as an alternate test constructor on the National Board Biochemistry Test Construction Committee for 2005.

STAFF EXCELLENCE AT GRASSY CREEK. It's been said that the Grassy Creek dental clinic receives "at least two compliments on Carol Hurst-Dudek daily," and now the IUSD Staff Council has given Carol one of the biggest compliments of all: the quarterly Staff Excellence Award. Carol is a dental hygienist at Grassy Creek through the Department of Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry, and she's been employed by IUSD since 1990.

She is described by a nominator as an "awesome worker" who goes out of her way to care for patients as well as to educate them about good oral hygiene and inform them about the stop-smoking program and other valuable health initiatives. A nominator wishes that everyone could witness Carol's "dedication, patience, and concern for her patients."

As with so many of the Staff Council's past award recipients, Carol has been singled out not only for her excellent patient skills but also because of the relationships she has developed with her colleagues. When an employee without a background in dental terminology was hired a couple of years ago, Carol patiently explained the terms and even wrote notes for the newest member of the Grassy Creek team. "She took me under her wing," says a grateful nominator. It's a fitting example of why Carol has earned top honors from the Staff Council.

HONORABLE MENTION. PhD candidate Dr. Jing Zhou earned honorable mention for an oral research presentation she gave during IUPUI's 2004 research competition sponsored by the scientific research society Sigma Xi. Her presentation, titled Porphyromonas gingivalis Affects the Collagen Degrading Ability of Gingival Fibroblasts, was also given in poster form at IUSD's Research Day. Her research mentor is Dr. L. Jack Windsor, assistant professor of oral biology. "Jing's honorable mention is quite special considering all the fine work that occurs on this campus," says Dr. Richard Gregory, director of student research and the PhD program. The officers of Sigma Xi's IU Medical Center Chapter were so impressed by the caliber of work being presented at the 2004 competition that they decided to nominate and sponsor each participant for a one-year membership in Sigma Xi. For more details about this organization, go to http://www.sigmaxi.org.

AMONG THE NOMINEES FOR STUDENT OF THE YEAR. Prof. Patricia Capps is pleased to inform us that Class of 2004 dental assisting students Amanda Justice and Kimberly Rash were among students recently nominated from four Indiana dental assisting programs for the Indianapolis District Dental Society (IDAS) Student of the Year award, which is based on good academic and clinical skills and an interview with the IDAS vice president and a member of the American Dental Assistants Association.

PRESIDENT-ELECT. Dr. Dominique Galli was elected president-elect of the Indiana Branch of the American Society for Microbiology during the group's annual meeting, which the IU School of Dentistry hosted in April. After serving a two-year term beginning in June, Dr. Galli will move into the president's position for another two years. Dr. Galli also made one of the three keynote presentations during the meeting, which was attended by about 80 researchers from all over the state.

IUPUI TEACHING AWARDS. Congratulations to the following professors, who are the dental school's most recent recipients of IUPUI Teaching Awards: Patricia Capps, clinical assistant professor of dental assisting; Dr. Timothy Carlson, professor of operative dentistry; Lorinda Coan, clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene; Dr. Margherita Fontana, assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry; Dr. Steven Haug, professor of prosthodontics; and Dr. Joseph Legan, clinical associate professor of endodontics. The awards are presented to faculty throughout campus at the end of each academic year in recognition of excellence in teaching.

A SAD FAREWELL. We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Arthur Klein, part-time clinical associate professor of pediatric dentistry, on April 24. Remarkably, he was just two months and six days away from marking his 50th anniversary at IUSD. A 1947 dental graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Klein came to Indiana as a private practitioner after five years of practice in Scranton, Penn., and two years of service in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He earned a master's degree in dentistry from IU in 1958. Back in 1960, when there were only 97 boarded "pedodontists" in the U.S., five of them served on the IU faculty, including Dr. Klein. He was a past president of what is now known as the pediatric dentistry board's College of Diplomates. He retired from private practice in 1983. He made invaluable contributions to both the undergraduate and graduate pediatric dentistry clinical programs during his long, long stay at IUSD, and he helped shape the education of thousands of IUSD's students. We salute this fine gentleman, and mourn his loss.

A PRIVILEGE FOR KATHERINE ENGLISH -- A PROUD MOMENT FOR IUSD. When Katherine English, senior administrative secretary in Dental Education, was asked to serve as the only IU staff representative on the search committee for IU's new president in 2002, she had no idea that the position would lead to a speaking engagement for her as a member of the official platform party for President Adam Herbert's inauguration in 2004. Although greatly surprised by this news â€" and more than a bit nervous about donning a cap and gown and speaking in front of an audience of more than 2,000, including many dignitaries from around the country, Kathy accepted the responsibility of presenting the "Greetings from the Staff" to Dr. Herbert with her usual grace, charm, and humor.

Dr. Herbert was inaugurated during ceremonies held in the IU Auditorium on the Bloomington campus on April 15. The cover photo in the April 23 issue of IU Home Pages shows Kathy and other members of the platform looking on as an ornate medallion known as the "jewel of office" is placed on the shoulders of the president (http://www.homepages.indiana.edu/042304).

"It was a huge honor and privilege to be the voice for my co-workers and friends," Kathy says. "My life is forever changed because of the inaugural experience."

In offering the staff's greetings, Kathy represented about 11,500 professional, support, clerical, technical, and maintenance employees. Remembering that Dr. Herbert said in his interview during the search process that he and his wife enjoyed all kinds of music, Kathy invited the couple to a "Beginning Urban Drumming" public concert that she's participating in as an IUPUI student on May 3. And she also extended an invitation to the new president to visit the School of Dentistry.

We're confident that IU found in Kathy English an ideal candidate to help choose a new president for IU, and to welcome him on behalf of the university's staff.

"President Herbert, we are the university's support system," Kathy told IU's 17th president, "and we are ready to join you as you lead us into a new and exciting chapter of IU's remarkable history."
