FACULTY PROMOTIONS. The following promotions for IUSD faculty were approved
in April by the Indiana University Trustees: Dr. Heidi Crow, promoted to
associate professor of hospital dentistry, with tenure; Dr. Edwin Parks,
promoted to professor of dental diagnostic sciences, with tenure; Dr. William
Hohlt, promoted to professor of orthodontics (tenure was awarded
previously); and Dr. David Brown, promoted to professor of prosthodontics
(tenure was awarded previously). Promotions are effective July 1, 2003, and
tenure for Drs. Crow and Parks is effective July 1, 2004.
RECOGNIZING LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE. Congratulations to Traci Adams,
director of student diversity support, who was among the faculty, staff, and
students at IUPUI who received leadership awards at the sixth annual Women's
Leadership Reception held on March 31. The awards are sponsored by IUPUI's
Student Life and Diversity Programs Office for Women.
Kudos are also in order for Dr. William Babler, associate professor of
oral biology, who has received the American Dermatoglyphics Association's 2003
Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the association and to this
field of science. The award was presented April 25 at the association's business
meeting in Tempe, Ariz. Dermatoglyphics is the study of friction ridges on the
skin that are used in forensics to establish identities and in medicine to
screen for genetic abnormalities.
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE FAUX BUSINESS. A manuscript on artificial
intelligence that John Gosney, director of technology services, has been
working on since last year is being published this month by Business
Communications Company, Inc. The company, John says, is an industry leader in
research and technical market analysis. His 150-page report, titled "Artificial
Intelligence: Burgeoning Application in Industry and Commerce," is for sale in
both electronic and hard copy formats.
"The report is targeted to those working within education, entertainment,
manufacturing, defense, and other areas that have an interest specifically in
data mining or advanced data analysis, and/or who are currently utilizing AI
technology and want an industry-wide overview of where the technology and
applications are heading," says John. The report forecasts the industry through
2007. More details are available at
http://www.bccresearch.com/editors/RG-275.html .
As a freelance writer, John is currently at work on two additional reports,
one on evolving trends in entertainment delivery (e.g., satellite radio/TV, the
Web) and another on emerging applications in artificial sense technology (i.e.,
artificial smell, vision, hearing).
STRIKING A BALANCE BETWEEN PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AND ORTHODONTICS. To any
passerby in the dental school's second-floor patient reception area, an
oversized door to the right of the reception desk appears to be leading into one
department. And it does, of course -- but behind that door the Department of
Oral Facial Development splits off into two busy and unique clinics that run
virtually independently of one another. As clinic services supervisor,
Deborah Smith oversees all of the business office aspects of both the
predoctoral pediatric dentistry clinic and the orthodontic clinic, including
financial matters, patient scheduling, and many other duties. For her expertise
in meeting the multitude of service needs of these two groups, Deborah has
earned the latest IUSD Staff Council Staff Excellence Award.
Deborah, says one of her nominators, consistently displays "knowledge, skill,
patience, and dedication in meeting the requests and demands of patients,
faculty, students, and staff."
Employed by IUSD since 1994, Deborah goes out of her way to provide more
services than are required in her job. For example, a list she assembled of
siblings who had been treated in the orthodontic clinic became the basis for the
department's clinical recall and external apical root resorption study.
Described as gracious but firm with patients and their families, Deborah has an
amicable nature that helps her resolve problems whenever they arise. "Debbie is
a very compassionate person who is always willing to work with parents and
patients in meeting their financial obligations," says another nominator. "This
commitment to excellence in ‘customer relations' occurs on a daily basis and
goes well beyond what is expected of her position."
Says yet another nominator: "Debbie has mastered the two complicated practice
management programs that are utilized in Oral Facial Development." She is
proficient in the MacBraces computer program in orthodontics as well as the QSI
program, which runs in both clinics.
Deborah is also described as "well liked and appreciated by the staff" and as
an employee who "maintains a respectful relationship with the faculty and
students." All in all, she's an ideal -- and highly deserving -- candidate for
the Staff Council Award.

IUSD Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award for Research
James Hartsfield Jr., professor and director of oral facial genetics and
professor of orthodontics, has been contributing to IU's research program since
he first joined the faculty a decade ago. Dr. Hartsfield is also appointed at
the medical school as a professor of medical and molecular genetics. He holds
four advanced degrees, including two doctorates (DMD, PhD) and master's degrees
in medical genetics and medical sciences. He received his certificate in
orthodontics from Harvard University. He is widely published and has acquired
extensive editorial experience as a reviewer for several refereed journals. His
work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. He
is a past recipient of an NIH Physician-Scientist award, and from 1996 to 2001
he was principal investigator on an NIH grant titled "Epoxide Hydrolase Studies
and Phenytoin-induced Clefting." Dr. Hartsfield is a recipient of the American
Association of Orthodontists Foundation B.F. Dewell Memorial Biomedical Research
Award, and he is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.
As a teacher and research mentor for students at IUSD, Dr. Hartsfield has been
able to observe with pride the accomplishments of his students, such as those of
Dr. Riyad Al-Qawasmi, whose research garnered a national award in 2002.
IUSD Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching
Vanchit John, assistant professor of periodontics and director of
undergraduate periodontics, has received this award quite early in his academic
career, in part for the excellent evaluations that have been written by students
about his efforts as a teacher. He received an Outstanding Periodontics Faculty
award from the DDS class in 2002. Dr. John contributes extensively to IUSD's
predoctoral program. He teaches in nine courses and also serves as a module and
course director. Like Dr. Hartsfield, Dr. John has four advanced degrees -- two
doctorates in dentistry and two master's degrees in periodontics. He received a
Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research
in 1995, the same year he graduated from IU's periodontic program. He spent the
next year as an IU postdoctoral research fellow through a program sponsored by
Eli Lilly Research Laboratories. He received a Young Investigator Fellowship
from the American Academy of Periodontology in 1996. Dr. John has been a member
of the faculty since 1998, and has always set an example for students through
his professionalism, dedication, and strong work ethic.
Finally, a word of thanks to all of the faculty, staff, and students who
served as Research Day judges: Riyad Al-Qawasmi, Masatoshi Ando, Karen Beard,
Jane Blanchard, David Brown, Patricia Capps, Lorinda Coan, Steven Dixon,

GRADUATION AWARDS BANQUET. In last month's calendar, we were pleased to share
with you the names of the graduating dental hygiene and dental students who have
been accepted into Sigma Phi Alpha and Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor societies. We
are equally pleased to list in this month's calendar the following 2003
graduates who were honored at the IUSD Graduation Awards Banquet, held at

prestigious IUPUI academic achievement award that was presented during
ceremonies held on campus in April.
