Military training exercises for Navy and Army dental officers commenced for dental students here at the school. Summer vacations were canceled, and a 3-semester academic year began. Two dental classes graduated in 1942--19 students in May and 24 in December. In July 1942, 97.5 percent of our school's students had either received, or filed an application for, Navy reserve or Army reserve commissions. The rotating curriculum was put into effect again in 1944 for the graduating students, who were also divided into spring and winter classes.

People, Places, and Things

McDONALD PROFESSORSHIP AWARDED TO DR. AVERY. Dr. David Avery, director of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry in the Department of Oral Facial Development, has been named the first Ralph E. McDonald Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the IU School of Dentistry. As many faculty and staff already know, Dr. McDonald is a world-renowned scholar and educator and dean emeritus of our school, having served in the deanship from 1968 (the first year as acting dean) until his retirement in 1985. Appointed first chair of the school's Department of Pediatric Dentistry (then Pedodontics) in 1953, Dr. McDonald, who was also a longtime director of the dental clinic at Riley Hospital for Children, worked with other faculty to create a pediatric dentistry residency program that developed into one of most highly respected in the country. Today, he resides in Sanibel, Fla., and Indianapolis.

Dr. Avery was first a student of Dr. McDonald's, and then his colleague. And now, Dr. Avery can look back on more than 30 years of professional collaborations and a deep personal friendship with the fellow many of us still refer to as "Dr. Mack." Like his mentor, Dr. Avery was a longtime chair of the pediatric dentistry departmen--in David's case, from 1976 until the department became a division of Oral Facial Development in 1993.

Both men have earned reputations as international leaders in children's dentistry. Drs. McDonald and Avery are widely recognized for their work on one of the world's best-known dental textbooks, Dentistry for the Child and Adolescent. Dr. McDonald published the lst edition in 1969, and Dr. Avery joined him as coauthor and coeditor of the 3rd edition in 1978. Now in its 7th edition and available in several other languages, the text has surpassed all other pediatric dentistry textbooks in number of editions.

The professorship was established by the Riley Memorial Association (RMA) through the support of Dr. McDonald's friends, colleagues, and former students and with a matching gift from the RMA.

The recipient of this endowed faculty position is deeply honored to be the first professor to carry the name of Ralph McDonald in his faculty title, calling it the capstone of his career. "It is the greatest honor of my professional life," says Dr. Avery, "and, more importantly, it is a tribute to a great man."

FACULTY PROMOTIONS. Congratulations to the following faculty members, whose promotions were recently approved by the Indiana University Trustees: Dr. John Campbell, promoted to associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with tenure; Dr. Ginat Mirowski, promoted to associate professor of oral medicine (School of Dentistry) and associate professor of dermatology (School of Medicine), with tenure; and Dr. Donald Newell, promoted to professor of periodontics. He received tenure in 1996. The promotions are effective July 1, 2002.

A SALUTE FROM THE CHANCELLOR. Congratulations to graduating dental student Gregory Olsen, who was among those recognized during the annual IUPUI Academic Honors Convocation held at University Place Conference Center in April. Mr. Olsen received the Chancellor's Scholar Award, which is given for outstanding academic achievement.

IUSD GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM TURNS 60 THIS SPRING. The IU Graduate School's approval of 2 new graduate degrees, announced in April 1942, signaled the beginning of the School of Dentistry's graduate degree program and set the groundwork for a program that evolved into one of the largest and most respected in the international dental community, attracting students from around the globe. The first areas of dentistry to be approved for master's degrees were Oral Pathology (now Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology) and Orthodontics. Stepping up to bat as the first graduate degree candidate in the history of our school was Dr. Morris Stoner, a London, Conn., resident and the 1942 IU dental grad with the highest scholastic average in his class. He entered the program in Orthodontics under the direction of a professor of "orthodontia" and the dean of the Graduate School in Bloomington. His thesis is on file in the basement-level stacks of the library, along with the many hundreds of dental school theses and dissertations that have followed his pioneering effort. Published in 1947, the thesis is titled "Cephalometric Study of Human Mandibular Proportions and Relationships in Normal Occlusion."

ANOTHER CHAPTER IN DR. ARENS' CAREER. A new textbook, Esthetics in Dentistry, Vol. 2, contains a chapter that Dr. Donald Arens, professor of endodontics, co-wrote with his colleagues Drs. Noah Chivian and Asgeir Sigurdsson. The 46-page chapter, "Endodontics and Esthetic Dentistry," contains 127 photo illustrations. Editor and main author of the text, published this year by B.C. Decker Publishing, is Dr. Ronald Goldstein.

IU FACULTY SERVING ON NATIONAL COMMITTEES. Dr. Michael Kowolik, professor of periodontics, has been appointed to the Ethics Committee of the AADR. He has also been serving since last year on the Membership Committee of the International Association for Dental Research. Dr. Richard Gregory, acting director of Research, has been a member of the AADR's Nominating Committee for the past 3 years and has now assumed the position of committee chair. Dr. Gregory is working with his committee to determine the next slate of officers for the AADR including the vice president, who will also be the president-elect.

HONOR SOCIETIES INDUCT NEW MEMBERS. During the annual awards program last month for Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha and Theta Theta Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), 16 graduating students of dental hygiene and dentistry were inducted as alumni members. Sigma Phi Alpha, the national honor society for dental hygiene, welcomed Lisa Dyer, Sonia Herrington, Amanda Murphy, Stacey Provo, and Jessica Ray. OKU, the national honor society for dentistry, welcomed Aaron Altschul, Charee Campbell, Ryan Goslin, Chad Harrington, David Knop II, Devon Kutsch, Michael Noffze, Gregory Olsen, Aidan Phan, Jacy Robling, and Elizabeth Smith.

Gregory Olsen was named OKU's Outstanding Student.

OKU also annually recognizes an outstanding 3rd year dental student with the William S. Kramer Award, which was bestowed on Michael French this year.

IUSD faculty inducted into OKU include Dr. Heidi Crow, assistant professor of hospital dentistry; Dr. Carlos González-Cabezas, assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry; Dr. Serkis Isikbay, assistant professor of prosthodontics; Dr. Edwin Parks, associate professor of dental diagnostic sciences; and Dr. Raymond Maddox, assistant professor of oral biology.

Receiving OKU's honorary membership was Crawfordsville, Ind., practitioner Jean Williams (DDS'69), a past president of the Indiana Dental Association.

Individuals attaining life membership in OKU are alumni Stephen Bailie (DDS'63), June Brose (DDS'72), Michael Brugos (DDS'71), Guthrie Carr (DDS'54), Lloyd Delman (DDS'57), Emanuel Dragomer (DDS'56), John Gromer (DDS'72), Charles Hazelrigg (DDS'70), Robert Makielski (DDS'44), Don Nesler (DDS'60), Scott Polizotto (DDS'64), and Ned VanRoekel (DDS'65).

FAMOUS PHOTOJOURNALISTS ARE SONS OF IUSD GRAD. Two of the world's most gifted and best-known photojournalists are David and Peter Turnley, the twin sons of the late Dr. William Turnley, a 1949 dental grad of IU and longtime orthodontic practitioner in Fort Wayne. Since the 1980s, the Turnley brothers have traveled the world over, covering extraordinary assignments in the midst of wars, revolutions, and other major conflicts. The stunning images captured through their camera lenses have appeared on the cover of Newsweek Magazine, for which Peter works as a contract photographer, and in National Geographic, the London Sunday Times, and countless other prestigious publications. In 1990, David, who was then working for the Detroit Free Press, won a Pulitzer Prize for his photos of political uprisings in China and Eastern Europe. He has been runner-up for the Pulitzer on four other occasions.

Shortly before his death in 1997, Dr. Turnley was interviewed on the TV program "60 Minutes" for a feature story about his remarkable sons. David and Peter are graduates of the University of Michigan and the Sorbonne in Paris, and have collaborated on at least three books: Beijing Spring, Moments of Revolution, and In Times of War and Peace.

On Sept. 11, 2001, David was working on a film documentary just a few blocks from the World Trade Center when the first plane hit. Peter, who was working in Cambridge, Mass., on that day, drove into New York City in the evening. He encountered a police barricade that was turning back everyone attempting to pass over a Bronx bridge into Manhattan, but was allowed passage when he showed police a NATO press pass he held from a previous assignment in Kosovo. Photos taken by the Turnley brothers on Sept. 11 and a video interview with David Turnley on his experience as a photographer at ground zero are available at http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0111/turnley_intro.htm .
