The Hills Are Alive with the Legacy of a Hoosier Wise Guy. "The Sound of
Music" premiered in New York City on this date in 1965 and went on to earn five
Oscars, including best film and directing kudos for Robert Wise. Wise was
born in Winchester, Ind., and raised in Connersville, Ind. He attended Franklin
College, in Franklin, Ind., but the Great Depression interfered with his chances
of finishing a degree. Wise headed for Hollywood and landed a job in the editing
department of RKO Studios. He is famous as the editor of 1941’s seminal film,
"Citizen Kane," which 67 years later still tops the American Film Institute’s
Greatest Movies list. The multitalented Wise edited, produced, and directed, and
was at home in many genres. He directed several film noir movies; pulled in 10
Oscars for another of the world’s great musicals, "West Side Story"; introduced
audiences to one of the first outer-space robots with a "my way or the highway"
attitude in "The Day the Earth Stood Still"; and took the classic,
scary-old-house horror story to new heights in "The Haunting." Wise got that
sheepskin from Franklin College after all – he was awarded an honorary Doctor of
Fine Arts degree in 1968. In 1990, he attended Connersville High School’s
rededication of its auditorium as the Robert E. Wise Center for the Performing
Arts. He died in 2005, shortly after his 91st birthday.

Indiana University celebrates FOUNDERS DAY this afternoon from 2 to 4:30 at
Assembly Hall on the IU Bloomington campus. We are delighted to report that one
of the faculty receiving a prestigious Founders Day award this year is our own
Dr. Karen Yoder, Preventive and Community Dentistry. Yoder recently
learned in a letter from IU President Michael McRobbie that she has been
selected to receive the Thomas Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Service Learning.
Under her direction, IUSD’s Division of Community Dentistry, established in
2000, has greatly enriched IUSD’s educational programs with diverse
service-learning opportunities for students, and has worked in tandem with many
of the dental school’s faculty, staff, and students to dramatically raise IUSD’s
profile as an important healthcare resource for persons in need throughout the
state of Indiana. Yoder will be honored along with other faculty award
recipients at a luncheon preceding the Founders Day ceremonies.
People, Places & Things
GARNERING ATTENTION FOR GOOD RETENTION. Dr. Richard Gregory, Oral
Biology, and Dr. Jeffrey Platt, Restorative Dentistry, were recently
informed that the IU School of Dentistry has won the AADR National Student
Research Group’s "Retention Award," which is given to the U.S. dental school
that has had the most AADR student members sign up as full members after they
graduate. IUSD will receive a $200 prize for the 29% retention rate it achieved
between 2006 and 2007.
PRESERVING THE SHELF LIFE OF IUSD’S HISTORY. Like most contemporary
libraries, the IU School of Dentistry’s is thriving in an electronic age,
offering its patrons a rich variety of online services designed to aid in the
quick and comprehensive researching of any topic.
But as one of the oldest dental libraries in the nation (established in 1881,
when the school was just two years old), IUSD’s Library also treasures the
numerous print materials and other artifacts that represent the long and
distinguished history of both the school and the profession of dentistry. And
with each passing year, the challenge of keeping the collection in shape grows
more daunting. The Library’s holdings currently include more than 58,000
volumes.
Thanks to a donation from the Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS), the IUSD Library is receiving a set of resources that will help preserve
the collection for future generations. Known as the IMLS Connecting to
Collections Bookshelf, the conservation materials include a set of 20 books
and DVDs that contain information on a variety of topics such as care of prints
and drawings, archival care, photograph management, emergency response and
salvage recommendations, and legal issues that arise with archival materials.
"The information contained therein will assist us in developing policies and
procedures for storing and displaying items, and developing plans to rescue and
restore items in case of an emergency like a burst water pipe," says assistant
librarian Barbara Gushrowski, who submitted the application.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal
funding of the nation’s 17,500 museums and 122,000 libraries. The IMLS and its
cooperator, the American Association for State and Local History, will award a
total of 2,000 free sets of the IMLS Bookshelf by the end of 2008. The
IUSD Library is among the first to receive the materials.
"We are pleased to announce the first group of IMLS Bookshelf
recipients," said IMLS director Anne-Imelda Radice. "These small
libraries and museums are taking up the charge to care for America’s heritage. A
recent national study tells a sobering story about the state of America’s
library and museum collections. Without immediate action we stand to lose
important collections that are at the heart of the American story."
The IMLS Bookshelf is a crucial component of Connecting to
Collections: A Call to Action, a conservation initiative launched by the
IMLS in 2006 in response to a 2005 study by Heritage Preservation documenting
the dire state of the nation’s collections. The multi-faceted, multi-year
initiative shines a nationwide spotlight on the needs of America’s collections,
especially those held by smaller institutions, which often lack the human and
financial resources necessary to adequately care for their collections.
The IUSD Library has numerous items of historical importance that will
benefit from Bookshelf. Among the collection is the complete set of
dental class yearbooks from the Indiana Dental College (1915-1925), an 1878-1879
private practice ledger of an unknown Kentland, Ind., dentist, and thousands of
photographs representing every generation of IUSD’s 129-year history.
The Library’s oldest book – A Treatise of the Teeth: Wherein the True
Causes of the Several Disorders to Which They Are Liable, Are Considered, by
A. Tolver – was published in its second edition in 1752.
DELTA DENTAL HELPS IUSD EXTEND CARE FOR GKAS PARTICIPANTS MOST IN NEED. As
announced in the Feb. 14, 2008 issue of Inside IUPUI, the IU dental
school has received generous funds from the Delta Dental Foundation that will
make it possible for the school to complete treatment on some of the Give Kids a
Smile participants who needed more dental care than could be provided during the
Feb. 1 event. To read the news release, go to

IN THE PAGES OF THE ADA NEWS. The IU School of Dentistry and
Indianapolis dentists David Wolf (DDS’87) and Marsha Hickey
(DDS’02) received prominent coverage of their Give Kids a Smile efforts in the
Feb. 18, 2008, issue of the ADA News. ADA journalist Stacie Crozier
wrote two reports during her visit to Indiana on Feb. 1, "Snow Can’t Put a
Damper on Indianapolis Give Kids a Smile" and "GKAS Care Crosses Cultural
Boundaries." While at the dental school she interviewed Dr. Judith Chin,
Pediatric Dentistry, and Desiree Dimond (DDS’90), a southwest side
dentist who has been volunteering her services at the dental school’s GKAS
treatment site, along with one of her dental assistants, Jennifer Whetstone
(Dent Assist Cert ’98), since the program began in 2003. You can access the

MARK YOUR APRIL CALENDARS. Dr. Bruce Pihlstrom, a professor emeritus
of the University of Minnesota and former acting director of the extramural
Center for Clinical Research at the National Institutes of Health/National
Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, will present "Sharing Lessons
Learned at the NIH: What You Need to Know" at noon on April 23, DS S116. Dr.
Pihlstrom will be the guest of the AADR Indiana Section, and all faculty,
students, and staff are invited to attend the seminar. Dr. Pihlstrom will be
available to meet with faculty on the morning prior to his talk and immediately
afterward. Please schedule an appointment with him by contacting Dr. Andréa
Ferreira Zandoná, IN-AADR president (azandona@iupui.edu).
