We also extend our best wishes for both a safe journey and a rewarding
experience to the 20 IUSD students and faculty who are volunteering their Spring
Break vacation this month to provide oral healthcare and education to
populations in need in rural Mexico and Ecuador.
Dental students heading to Mexico are Jeffrey Jones and Nicole
Weddell, 2nd yr.; Lauren Weddell, 3rd yr.;
Kevin Beadle, Brett Grube, and Nathan Williams, 4th yr.;
and pediatric dentistry resident Dr. Joseph Guido. They will be mentored
by Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier, assistant professor of preventive and
community dentistry; and Dr. Armando Soto, visiting assistant scientist.
The Ecuador team consists of dental hygiene student Megan Fisher, 2nd
yr.; and dental students Kristin Harpham, Cheryl Hartman, and William
Johnson, 3rd yr.; and Michael Foust, Kenneth Otterstedt,
Nikkole Patterson, Jeffrey Riggs, and Lisa Young, 4th yr.
Faculty mentors are Dr. Timothy Carlson, professor of operative
dentistry; and Dr. Samuel Campbell Jr., clinical associate professor of
oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Don't forget that you can still support our volunteers' service-learning
efforts abroad simply by enjoying the pizza-or-chicken sandwich lunches they
sell for $5 on most Thursdays throughout March and April.
While IUSD's students and faculty prepared for this latest service-learning
experience, Dr. Karen Yoder, director of Community Dentistry and a
national expert in the field of service-learning, has been busy writing about
this increasingly important teaching methodology used in dental schools. Read
what she has to say in her article appearing in the February 2006 issue of the
Journal of Dental Education: A Framework for Service-Learning in Dental
Education. 70(2):115-123. http://www.jdentaled.org.

A Bow to America's Other Beloved ‘Lucy.' Attention women dentists and
women dental students: Your pioneer was born on this day 173 years ago, in 1833.
The country's first female dentist, Dr. Lucy Hobbs, graduated from the
Ohio College of Dental Surgery in 1866. (She later married, and is known today
as Lucy Hobbs Taylor.) It would be a long, long time after Dr. Hobbs was handed
her diploma â€" and indeed, after her death in 1910, before women began gaining
entrance in significant numbers into American dental schools.
Our own Indiana Dental College, which opened in 1879, declared in its first
mission statement that the goal of the college was to teach students to be
"competent and gentlemanly practitioners of dentistry." Just one year later,
though, the college formally invited "lady" students into the institution,
albeit with a gentlemanly promise that special arrangements would be made for
their anatomy and physiology classes.
Whatever those special arrangements were, they gathered dust for another
decade. The college's first female graduates, both in the DDS Class of 1891,
were Dr. Hattie Scott, of Galveston, Texas, and Dr. Lucinia McCollum,
originally of Minnesota and later of Warren, Ind. Our hats are off to their male
contemporaries, who quickly recognized the outstanding leadership qualities of
female dentists. Only three years after Dr. McCollum's graduation, she was
elected president of the Indiana Dental College alumni association.
Numbers of women in dentistry in this nation didn't begin to jump
significantly until the 1970s. Between 1879 and 1974, more than 5,000 men â€" but
only 56 womenâ€" earned dental degrees from the IU School of Dentistry and its
predecessor. By the 1989-1990 school year, however, about one-third of the
dental school population was female. And today, the school's four dental classes
are roughly 42 percent female.

Hub's a Hall of Famer. Congratulations to IU School of Dentistry graduate
and pediatric dentist Hubbard "Hub" Hougland (DDS'63), of Muncie, Ind.,
who is among the former basketball stars being taken into the Indiana Basketball
Hall of Fame during ceremonies held this evening at the Primo Banquet Hall in
Indianapolis. Dr. Hougland was a varsity member of the Scottsburg, Ind.,
Warriors from 1951 to 1955. He is being honored as the first Scottsburg player
to score more than 1,000 points in a career. His record of 1,323 points stood
until 1969, and a half century after he scored them, his point count is still
the fourth highest in the school's history. Hub and his teammates won sectional
titles for three years running (1953-55). After he graduated, Hub was also a
standout basketball player at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where
he enrolled on a scholarship. He set a single season field goal accuracy record
during his junior year.

People, Places, and Things
SMILES DELIVERED. Thanks to the notable efforts of student, staff, and
faculty volunteers in collaboration with dental professionals from the
community, the IU School of Dentistry treatment site for February's Give Kids a
Smile Day provided free dental examinations and treatment to 56 youngsters in
need. Another 30 children were screened by Dr. Judith Chin, assistant
professor of preventive and community dentistry, prior to the event. As usual,
IUSD's student volunteers put their own special stamp of excellence on the
program by conducting educational clinics in the Pediatric Dentistry reception
area, escorting patients and families from the first-floor screening clinic to
Pediatric Dentistry, serving chairside, and fostering communication as
interpreters. Dr. Joan Kowolik, assistant professor of pediatric
dentistry, reports that the student volunteer pool included 13 dental assisting
students, nine dental hygiene students, and 27 dental students.
SWENSON SCHOLARS. Congratulations to third-year periodontic graduate students
Drs. Burton Largura and Jules Mascarenhas, who are the 2006
recipients of Henry M. Swenson Periodontic Scholarships. Presented in
February in Chicago, the scholarships honor IU Professor Emeritus Swenson, a
part-time professor of periodontics and an IUSD faculty member since 1943.
CONFERENCE PRESENTER. Last month Dr. Michael Kowolik, professor of
periodontics, presented a paper at an international conference, "Making People
Better," hosted by the University of Otago Bioethics Centre in New Zealand.
Titled "Ethical Challenges in Conducting Clinical Research Within Mayan
Communities of Central America," the paper represented a collaborative effort
between Dr. Kowolik and Dr. Eric Meslin, director of IU's Center for
Bioethics. Also during the conference, Dr. Kowolik participated in a
multinational panel on research in indigenous populations. He has been an
affiliate faculty member of the IU Center for Bioethics since 2004.
TIME TO PULL OUT YOUR MOST COMFY SNEAKERS. Plan to join Team IUSD in the
annual KOMEN INDIANAPOLIS RACE FOR THE CURE, to be held April 22. IUPUI team
co-captains for Dentistry are once again Karla Newman, assistant to the
chair, Department of Oral Facial Development; and Beth Wyeth, dental
hygienist at the Cottage Corner Dental Clinic. Karla and Beth do a remarkable
job of assembling a first-rate team to represent our school each year. If you
can't participate in the event, don't forget that donations are highly
appreciated and a helpful boost to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's
ongoing fight against this disease. You can register online at
http://race.komenindy.org,
or pick up a print form from Karla (DS249) or Beth.
