People, Places, and Things
DR. YAGNIK IS NEW POSTDOC. The Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and
Radiology informs us that during the first week of March Dr. Darshna Yagnik
is starting a year-long postdoctoral fellowship under the guidance of Dr.
Mythily Srinivasan, assistant professor of oral pathology and director of
the Cancer Biology and Immunology Laboratory. Dr. Yagnik is from London,
England, where she received a PhD degree from Imperial College in 2004. She has
been working as a lecturer in clinical immunology at Kingston University. Prior
to that she was a research assistant at Imperial College London at Hammersmith
Hospital, and a scientific adviser at the Institute of Cancer Research (a
College of the University of London) and the Royal Marsden cancer center.
SWENSON SCHOLARS. Congratulations to periodontic graduate students Drs.
Burton Largura and Saba Khan, who are the 2005 recipients of the
Henry M. Swenson Periodontic Scholarships. The scholarships were presented
in February at a dinner held in association with the Chicago Midwinter meeting.
The scholarships honor IU Professor Emeritus Swenson, a part-time professor of
periodontics and an IUSD faculty member since 1943.
A NEW PATH FOR SANG KWON. Next time you run into first-year dental student
Sang Kwon, please shake his hand and give him an extra "welcome" into the
profession of dentistry â€" his studies here mark the beginnings of a second
career. Sang is among several young professionals who are featured in the
current issue of INtake magazine (Feb. 24-March 2), a youth-oriented
weekly supplement of the Indianapolis Star. For her cover story titled
"Feel Like Life Is Ticking Away?," reporter Kimiko Martinez interviewed
Sang, 31, and others in his age bracket who have decided very early in their
lives to take their successful careers in a completely new direction. Before
Sang came to dental school last fall, he analyzed clinical trial data and was a
database designer for Eli Lilly and Company. Sang told INtake that,
although he loved his workplace, he couldn't envision making a decades-long
career out of that type of position. His interest in dentistry was piqued after
he read a profile about dentists, and realized he was drawn to the idea of
working with his hands. With the first of eight semesters in dental school now
behind him, Sang has no regrets about his decision to reeducate himself in a new
field. As he told the magazine: "I absolutely know that I made the right
choice." We're pleased to have you on board at 1121 West Michigan Street, Sang!
This week's online version of INtake is available through Wed., March 2:
www.INtakeweekly.com.
WHY? JUST BECAUSE IUSD HAS A THOUGHTFUL STAFF COUNCIL. If you see
representatives of the IUSD Staff Council heading toward your department or
division, you may just be the next recipient of a newly created "Just Because"
visit. The Staff Council has started a monthly program designed to let us know
that group efforts within the school do not go unnoticed. "We wanted to show the
different areas of the school that they are appreciated each and every day â€"
just because they are part of our family," says Michelle Fatheree,
council secretary. Each area to be recognized will be randomly chosen at the
council's monthly meetings; there is no nomination process. The first name out
of the hat at January's meeting was Clinic C, whose staff members were
pleasantly surprised with a juice and muffin breakfast in their honor on Feb.
22.
JAPANESE JOURNAL TO FEATURE DR. ANDO. Dr. Masatoshi Ando, assistant
scientist in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, is one of
three or four U.S.-based dentists from Japan who have been invited to write a
series of personal articles for Dental Review, a journal for general
practitioners in Japan. Japanese dentists who have studied outside of the
country are the focus of the series. After earning his dental and PhD degrees
from Osaka Dental University, Dr. Ando came to IU in 1994 to study as a visiting
researcher at the Oral Health Research Institute. He accepted a position on IU's
full-time faculty in 1998. His articles are scheduled to appear in the April,
May, and June issues of the journal. In the first, he will discuss IU and its
history; in the second, the research he has been involved with at IU, including
work on the early detection of dental caries; and in the third, his impressions
of life in general in the United States.
ANGLE SOCIETY PASSES THE GAVEL TO DR. HOHLT. Congratulations to Dr.
William Hohlt, professor of orthodontics, who is the new president of the
Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. He was
inducted for a one-year term during a recent meeting of the component in Naples,
Fla.
The prestigious Angle society is named for an inventor, educator, and pioneer
in the field who established the first private school for orthodontics in 1900.
The society and a highly respected scientific journal, The Angle Orthodontist,
were created as a tribute to Dr. Angle at the time of his death in 1930.
The national organization is composed of about a thousand members and is
divided into seven components. The Midwest Component (114 members) covers the
largest number of states (17) as well as Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. It
is a special honor for Dr. Hohlt to serve as a component president in 2005,
since this year marks the 75th anniversary of the society and the 150th
anniversary of Dr. Angle's birth. The society's 2005 biennial meeting will be
held in August at Lake Tahoe, Nev.
REEL VALUABLE HISTORY. IUSD's history has a clever way of hiding itself in
the many nooks and crannies â€" and closets â€" of this sprawling dental school,
patiently waiting to be found and re-appreciated by a new generation. Such was
the case recently in the Division of Dental Materials, where a cache of 16 mm
films belonging to Dr. Ralph Phillips, former longtime head of Dental
Materials at IU and an international legend in materials science, was retrieved
from a closet. Dr. Jeffrey Platt, the Ralph W. Phillips Scholar in Dental
Materials, had the films converted to DVDs, which have wound up preserving more
than Dr. Phillips' half-century-old lessons about the then-proper use of amalgam
and other materials. We viewed these teaching tapes with hopes of spotting The
Legend himself, and Dr. Phillips does indeed appear for a few fleeting seconds
in one tape.
But totally unexpected was the appearance in yet another tape, this one at
least 60 years old, of Dr. William Crawford, dean of the IU School of
Dentistry from 1940 to 1945. One of Dr. Crawford's first acts as dean was to
hire Ralph â€" just 22 years old and fresh from the IU Bloomington campus â€" to
help the dean teach a dental materials course and conduct research on the
development of plastics for use in denture bases and cementing materials. During
Dr. Crawford's five-year stay at IU, the two men turned a classroom across from
the dean's office into a materials research lab, which years later under Dr.
Phillips' direction became one of the most respected materials science labs in
the country. Remaining with IUSD throughout his distinguished career, Dr.
Phillips died in 1991, two months after publication of the 9th
edition of his famous textbook, The Science of Dental Materials (now
published under the name Phillips' Science of Dental Materials and edited
by Dr. Kenneth Anusavice of the University of Florida).
These DVDs are a great treasure for IUSD history buffs, especially since to
the best of our knowledge the dental school holds no original photographs of
Dean Crawford. Dr. Maynard Hine was named dean when Dr. Crawford left to
accept the dental deanship at the University of Minnesota, and one of Dr. Hine's
first acts as dean was to hire Richard Scott, who established the
photography department that we now know as Dental Illustrations. Original photos
of faculty and staff taken prior to Scottie's arrival, therefore, are in short
supply â€" although we suspect (hope?) that a few of them might be sitting in a
nook or cranny somewhere just waiting, like the Dental Materials films, to be
re-discovered.
