People, Places, and Things
ALL SMILES. The School of Dentistry's involvement in the American Dental
Association's second annual "Give Kids a Smile" program was the lead
story in the Feb. 20 edition of Inside IUPUI, which pictured three of the
89 children who received free dental care at the school on Feb. 6 in recognition
of National Children's Dental Access Day. IUSD once again served as a treatment
site for the Indiana branch of this annual volunteer program, which offers care
to children in need at dental offices, clinics, and schools throughout the
country. Our school was one of about 90 Hoosier treatment sites coordinated by
the Indiana Dental Association, local sponsor of the event. About 200 dentists
volunteered statewide along with their staff members. Last year about a thousand
children were treated statewide, and this year's goal was to nearly double that
number, to about 1,800.
The dental school also opened its doors to a dozen or so community dentists
and members of their staff, who joined IU's faculty, staff, and student
volunteers in treating twice as many children as last year. Many of the children
seen at the IUSD site were Spanish speaking, so faculty, staff, and student
volunteers also played invaluable roles as interpreters.
New to this year's event, thanks to an inspired group of our students, was a
colorful information table geared for youngsters as well as the appearance of a
couple of oversized-but-cuddly mascots. Volunteers assisting with these
activities in the lobby included second-year dental hygiene students Sadie
Delon, Ashley Groover, Angelique Rainey, Amy Stephen, and Ney Zavala;
and dental students Betsy Crandall, Anjana Gupta, Maribeth Love, and
Courtney Schmaltz (first year), Adrienne Hedrick (second year),
Gianna Georgion and Nassim Olabi (third year), and Rafah
Abdelmonem (fourth year).
SWENSON SCHOLARS. Congratulations to third-year periodontic graduate students
Drs. Michael Edwards and Gary Yip, who are the 2004 recipients of
the Henry M. Swenson Periodontic Scholarships. The scholarships were
presented in February at a dinner held in association with the Chicago Midwinter
meeting. The scholarships honor IU Professor Emeritus Swenson, a part-time
professor of periodontics and an IUSD faculty member since 1943.
ANOTHER FELLOWSHIP FOR JOAN KOWOLIK. Last year, Dr.
Joan Kowolik, assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, was one of 21
dental faculty members in the nation to be accepted as a fellow in the American
Dental Education Association's 2003-2004 Leadership Institute, and now she has
been informed by the ADEA that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
has chosen her for a 2004 DHHS Primary Health Care Policy Fellowship. About 70
national health organizations, including nine associated with dentistry,
nominated one individual each, and 30 persons were then selected by the
Secretary of Health and Human Services to participate in the program. Dr.
Kowolik was the ADEA's nominee.
The purpose of the six-month fellowship, according to the DHHS, is to provide
a unique learning experience for early-to-mid career professionals with five to
10 years' professional experience in any combination of primary health:
care/service, academics, research, and administration. The overall goal of the
training sessions, says the DHHS, is to increase the capabilities of primary
healthcare leaders to affect health policy at institutional, local, state, and
national levels.
As a fellow Dr. Kowolik will be participating in three one-week intensive
training sessions, two of which will be held in the Washington, D.C., area,
including a March 28-April 2 session that will delve into federal policies and
government. Later in the program, participants will be working in
interdisciplinary groups to learn how to design and develop a policy topic.
