Recognition Month for IUSD's
Building Services Staff
May 30 (Tues.)
A Well-Scrubbed Appearance. Doug Ross, Ben Casey, Meredith Grey, Marcus
Welby, Joe Gannon, Jeffrey Geiger, James Kildare, and Young Doctor Malone have
all looked stylin' in their scrubs, but that's easy for the TV docs because they
get plenty of help from the wardrobe department. If your scrubs have seen better
days but you're too busy right now to stop for a wardrobe tune-up, you have a
convenient opportunity to stock up on new clinical garb today during the IUPUI
Jags Bookstore SCRUB SUIT SALE. Here's a case where you don't have to go to the
store; the store is coming to YOU. Stop by the dental school's basement locker
area between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and you'll find a large variety of scrubs to
choose from, all marked down from their original price by 25%. Jags Bookstore
members are entitled to an additional 5% discount (and you can sign up at the
sale).

Indiana Section of the American Association for Dental Research presents THE
MONITOR DENTAL PRACTICE PROGRAM, by Dr. Brad Curtis, University of Sydney
Faculty of Dentistry, Australia; noon-1 p.m. in DS114. Synopsis: In 2003,
the University of Sydney implemented the Caries Management System within the
clinical dentistry component of the undergraduate teaching program. Today's
presentation details the development and implementation of a clinical trial that
seeks to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the Caries Management System within
private dental practices in Australia. This research is the first being
undertaken in Australasia to establish the costs and effectiveness of a
structured preventive program compared to "standard" care, provided by a range
of city, suburban, and rural dental practices in fluoridated and nonfluoridated
communities. The perspective of the private dental practice is the focus of the
analysis, because without information on cost-effectiveness it is unlikely that
the profession will embrace the necessary changes. All faculty, staff, and
students are welcome to attend this presentation.

James J. Baldwin, Take a Bow.
Like any other year, 1956 had its share of golden moments: Mickey Mantle
was named the American League's Most Valuable Player, Around the World in 80
Days won an Oscar, the Phil Silvers Show won an Emmy, a college
football star in Indiana â€" Paul Hornung of Notre Dame â€" received the
Heisman Trophy, and future IUSD dental graduate Gregory Bell, now of
Logansport, Ind., won an Olympic gold medal in the long jump. Dick Clark
took over as host of American Bandstand, and high school gym floors
around the nation were put to the test by sock-hoppers swinging to hits like
Blue Suede Shoes and Be-Bob-A-Lula. Nat King Cole became the
first African American to host a nationally televised variety program. And in
1956, you could buy a gallon of gas for less than what one first-class postage
stamp costs you today.
On July 1st of that year, a golden moment was in the making for the IU School
of Dentistry, too. It was Sunday, and while White House dwellers Dwight
and Mamie Eisenhower celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary,
and Elvis surprised TV viewers by showing up on the Steve Allen Show
in a tuxedo, Dr. James Baldwin, an IU Class of 1954 dental graduate (and
"Yaley" alum in physics), was busy preparing for his first day on the job as a
part-time instructor of "orthodontia" at IU.
We're pretty sure that no marching band and no sky full of confetti heralded
Dr. Baldwin's arrival, but had IUSD known then what IUSD knows today about this
extraordinarily gifted and dedicated teacher, such a greeting would have been
appropriate.
It isn't his personal achievements that have made Dr. Baldwin invaluable to
the orthodontic faculty, although he has plenty of them to his credit: He's a
diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a former president of the
Edward H. Angle Society (both the Midwest Component and national organization),
and a recipient of prestigious honors such as the American Association of
Orthodontists' Louise Ada Jarabak Research Award and the American Board of
Orthodontics' Dale B. Wade Award.
It is, instead, the special way that Dr. Baldwin has steadfastly connected
with students for five decades, and his philosophy about the learning process,
that have shaped his remarkable contributions to the part-time faculty at IUSD.
"In the beginning I decided to teach because it looked like a good way to
learn more myself," Dr. Baldwin said in an interview in 1997. …"If you want to
learn something really well, teach it! Teaching orthodontics helped me maintain
a better standard of practice."
He also said that his favorite reason for coming out to the school is the
chance to interact with students. "It's been an interesting experience to work
with students, first as their contemporary, then in a fatherly way, and now in a
grandfatherly way."
When asked to define the difference between a good teacher and a great one,
Dr. Baldwin said: "The great teacher is the one you remember many years later.
The great teachers in my life stimulated and challenged me. They brought their
material to life with their enthusiasm."
There's no question which category Dr. Baldwin belongs to.
Dr. Baldwin, on behalf of all the students you have expertly guided in the
past half century, we say happy 50th anniversary to you, and thank you for
everything you've done to support the mission of this school. Yours is an
astonishing record of service, and one that makes IUSD extremely proud.
People, Places, and Things
STUDENT HEADING FOR DENTISTRY'S HUB. If dental students were required to
write "What I Did on My Summer Vacation" essays at the beginning of fall
semester, Poonam Shah would undoubtedly have a very impressive vacation
to describe. She recently learned that she has been accepted into a prestigious
externship for a select group of dental students to be held at the American
Dental Association headquarters in Chicago this summer. A few days after she
completes her first year of dental school, Poonam will head for Chicago for a
four-week opportunity to work on research projects under the supervision of ADA
scientists. She was eligible for this program as a member of the American
Student Dental Association. Poonam will be matched with one or more researchers
whose interests are similar to hers. The externs will be introduced to many
components and activities of the ADA and its foundation, including the Seal of
Acceptance process and the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. Some externs may
collaborate with researchers at the ADA Foundation Paffenbarger Research Center
in Gaithersburg, Md. Poonam and the other externs will also help plan the next
annual ADA Dental Students Research Conference.
KNOW YOUR REPS. After recent campus elections, three IUSD staff members were
added to the list of those representing the dental school on the IUPUI Staff
Council: Eileen Cassidy and Barbara Jarjoura, both administrative
secretaries in Restorative Dentistry; and Jeffery Chandler, clinical
services team leader, Office of Clinical Affairs. In this role, they join
Carol Dill, assistant to the dean; Michelle Fatheree, assistant to
the chair in Restorative Dentistry; and Christina Freeman, infection
control supervisor, Central Sterilization and Services.
TEACHING AWARD FOR DR. JOHN. Congratulations to Dr. Vanchit John,
associate professor of periodontics, who has received a 2006 Outstanding
Periodontal Educator Award from the American Academy of Periodontology. The
awards are given by the academy to periodontics teachers who demonstrate
excellence in teaching and serve as an inspiration to their students. Dr. E.
Brady Hancock, chair of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, surprised
Dr. John with the award during a recent departmental meeting. The names of this
year's recipients will be highlighted at the AAP's annual meeting this fall in
San Diego.
PROMOTIONS. Congratulations to the following professors, who have recently
been notified of their promotions on the IUSD faculty:

Preventive and Community Dentistry, Department of Preventive and Community
Dentistry

Oral Biology, Department of Oral Biology
