People, Places, and Things
MEMBER OF THE QUEEN'S COURT. First-year dental student Shreya Patel
was busy in May pursuing not only her dental studies but also her duties as one
of the 33 princesses composing the Indy 500 Queen's Court. You can see a photo
of Shreya in the current issue of the electronic newsletter Inside IUPUI
(http://www.iupui.edu/news/insider_050526.htm).
Speaking of the Indy 500, did you know that two of our school's former
students competed in the race? London dentist Alfred Moss, father of
legendary race-car driver Stirling Moss, came to Indianapolis in the fall
of 1923, ostensibly to take advanced classes at the Indiana Dental College but,
in reality, to spend most of his time out at "the track," pursuing his dream of
being in the Indy 500. He managed to earn a spot in the 1924 race, starting in
20th position and finishing in 16th. He took home about
$900 in prize money. More recently, IU dental graduate Jack Miller
(DDS'92) of Indianapolis was known in the late 1990s as the Indy 500's "Racing
Dentist." In his rookie year in 1997, he drove a Crest Racing Dallara/Infiniti
under the primary sponsorship of Procter & Gamble. He started in position 17 and
finished in the 20th, earning a purse of $171,250.
Dr. Arden Christen, professor emeritus of oral biology, recently wrote
about Dr. Moss for the Journal of the History of Dentistry (vol. 53, no.
1, March 2005). His article is titled "Alfred E. Moss: 1924 Indy 500 Race
Driver, British Dentist and Father of Sir Stirling Moss."
IU's TEACHING AWARDS. During May's IUSD Faculty Council meeting, the
following faculty members were honored with IU's 2005 Trustee Teaching Awards,
which recognize excellence in teaching during the past year: Patricia Capps,
clinical associate professor of dental assisting; Dr. Judith Chin,
assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry; Lorinda Coan,
clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene; Dr. Margherita Fontana,
associate professor of preventive and community dentistry; Dr. Jeffrey Platt,
Ralph W. Phillips Scholar in Dental Materials and associate professor in dental
materials; and Dr. Jack Schaaf, associate professor of dental diagnostic
sciences.
RESEARCH AWARD FOR TRENTON THALMAN. Congratulations to new IUSD alumnus, Dr.
Trenton Thalman, who shortly before graduation received the Cyril S. Carr
Research Scholarship for overall excellence in research at the predoctoral
level. The award, which is named in memory of a 1916 graduate of the Indiana
Dental College and an Indianapolis practitioner, was presented during a meeting
last month of the Indiana section of the American Association for Dental
Research. In Dr. Thalman's most recent research study, he compared metastatic
and nonmetastatic osteosarcoma cell lines.
GRADUATION AWARDS AND HONORS. We also offer congratulations to every member
of IUSD's graduating classes in dental assisting, dental hygiene, public health
dental hygiene, dentistry, and graduate dentistry. We wish each of you the best
as you begin your careers, or as you advance to a new level of training.
Below are the names of the graduates who received awards or honors at the end
of the 2004-2005 school year. (Graduates who were accepted into Sigma Phi Alpha
and Omicron Kappa Upsilon were announced in the March issue of this calendar,
which is posted on the IUSD Homepage under "News and Information.")
