ASSESSMENT WEEK for lst and 2nd year dental students
4 (Fri.)
At the end of the 2003-2004 school year, IUSD's graduates aren't the only
ones going out the door. This month we're reluctantly saying goodbye to 10
extremely dedicated and unforgettable dental school employees who are retiring.
Collectively, their years of service to our school total 308! (The large number
of employees leaving our ranks for retirement this summer is reminiscent of the
summer of 1988, when Prof. Paul Barton and Drs. Malcolm Boone,
Robert Derry, Roland Dykema, Timothy O'Leary, Ralph Schimmele,
Richard Schnell, James Shanks, and Miles
Standish officially retired.)
Three faculty members are being honored with a retirement reception today.
Please come to the school lounge this afternoon from 3 to 5 to SAY YOUR
FAREWELLS to oral biology professor Dr. Arden Christen, acting chair of
the Department of Oral Biology as well as adjunct professor of preventive and
community dentistry (School of Dentistry) and public health (School of
Medicine), being recognized for 24 years of service; Dr. James McDonald Jr.,
associate dean for Dental Education and professor of oral biology, 36 years; and
Dr. Larry Ryan, associate professor of operative dentistry and one of the
directors of the Comprehensive Care Clinics, 28 years. All faculty, staff, and
students are invited. A reception for the seven other retirees is also on the
horizon -- see June 29.

to volunteer should send an e-mail message to Dr. Karen Yoder, director,

People, Places, and Things
11 PEARs IN THE IUPUI BASKET â€" AND 4 OF THEM BELONG TO US. Congratulations to
the four IUSD faculty members were among only 11 IUPUI teachers receiving
Prestigious External Award Recognition (PEAR) at the annual IUPUI Chancellor's
Academic Honors Convocation in April. The PEAR awards are given to faculty whose
academic achievements were recognized by organizations outside the university in
the past year. With four recipients, the School of Dentistry received more PEARs
than any other school on campus this year. Recognition for Dr. Carl Andres,
professor of prosthodontics, was based on his Andrew J. Ackerman lifetime
achievement award from the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics. For
Dr. William Babler, associate professor of oral biology, the recognition
acknowledged his Distinguished Service Award from the American Dermatoglyphics
Association. Dr. Chris Miller, professor of oral microbiology (School of
Dentistry) and of microbiology and immunology (School of Medicine), was
recognized for the James J. Crawford lifetime achievement award in infection
control that he accepted from the Organization for Safety and Asepsis
Procedures. Recognition for Dr. Eugene Roberts, Joseph R. and Louise Ada
Jarabak Professor of Orthodontics, was the result of his Louise Ada Jarabak
Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research outstanding achievement
award from the American Association of Orthodontists. These awards were all
received in 2003 and were announced in previous issues of the school calendar.
MASTER'S DEGREE FOR MELINDA MEADOWS. IUSD faculty member Melinda Meadows
received a Master of Science degree in Health Sciences Education from the IU
School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences during IUPUI's Commencement
exercises on May 9. Ms. Meadows is a visiting clinical lecturer in dental
hygiene in the Department of Oral Facial Development with an adjunct position in
the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs. She also holds two
other IU degrees: a B.S. in Health Sciences Education (2000) and an A.S. in
Dental Hygiene (1978).
HONORARY DEGREE FOR LEHMAN ADAMS. One of the dental school's longest-serving
faculty members was among four individuals to receive prestigious honorary
degrees from Indiana University during IUPUI's Commencement. The university
bestowed upon oral surgeon and part-time faculty member Dr. Lehman Adams Jr.
an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree for, in the words of IUPUI
Chancellor Charles Bantz, "an exemplary life of meaning and purpose, a
life well spent."
Dr. Adams, who is a 1949 dental graduate of IU, was the first African
American to be appointed to the dental school's faculty. He arrived in 1954,
while in the middle of his postgraduate studies in oral surgery. His 50 years as
an educator have been balanced with a highly successful private practice and a
lifetime of humanitarian efforts on behalf of Marion County residents in need.
Dr. Adams "brought wisdom, skills, and good judgment to oral surgery," said
part-time faculty member Dr. Robert Stokes when asked to comment on his
former professor for the write-up appearing in the IUPUI Commencement program.
"He was deeply involved with overall student welfare and has spent a good part
of his professional career helping students find financial support for dental
school."
For years, Dr. Adams has played an invaluable role in helping the dental
school develop strategies for recruiting and retaining minority dental students.
In 2002, Citizens Gas & Coke Utility established an annual scholarship program
named in honor of Dr. Adams, who long served as president of the utility's board
of trustees. The program assists minority IU dental students from Marion County.
Dr. Adams' tireless efforts on behalf of the community-- including many
thousands of hours donated to improving children's health -- have helped give
rise to his reputation as one of Indianapolis' outstanding civic leaders. He has
served on the governing boards of numerous businesses and civic groups,
including 10 years as vice president of the Indianapolis Metropolitan
Development Commission. He was co-chair of the city's landmark Tanselle-Adams
Commission on Police Use of Deadly Force. Among the many high honors Dr. Adams
has received was his appointment, by Gov. Evan Bayh in 1990, as a Sagamore of
the Wabash.
Dr. Adams is only the third IUSD alumnus to receive an honorary D.Sc. degree
from IU. Daniel Laskin (DDS'47), longtime chair of oral and maxillofacial
surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University, was honored in 2001; and the late
Joseph Volker (DDS'36), first chancellor of the University of Alabama
System, in 1970. In addition, the late Dr. Maynard Hine, dean of IUSD
from 1945 to 1968 and IUPUI's first chancellor, received the D.Sc. degree in
1979.
Dr. Adams "has brought pride and honor to our profession, our university, and
our community," Dean Lawrence Goldblatt said in the Commencement
announcement, which will be reprinted in full in the IUSD Alumni Bulletin
(excerpted here with permission of the IU Office of Publications).
FACULTY-IN-RESIDENCE. Dr. Suzanne De Ball, associate professor of
pediatric dentistry, is one of four faculty members on campus to be selected by
the IUPUI Office of Professional Development (OPD) to serve as a
Faculty-in-Residence for the 2004-2005 academic year. With an honorarium of
$5,000, Dr. De Ball will undertake a project titled "Preparing Future Faculty
for Faculty Careers." Her work will involve teachers from around the campus. Dr.
De Ball will also serve as the School of Dentistry's link to the OPD, helping
communicate IUSD's needs to the OPD's Program Leaders Committee. To learn more
about this office, go to http://opd.iupui.edu (Faculty-in-Residence information
is under "Administration/Governance").
AUTHORS! AUTHORS! Written any good books lately? The campus's Jags Bookstores
want to know. The Cavanaugh Hall and Union Medical bookstores are in the process
of creating a general reading section devoted to works by campus authors. They
are particularly interested in titles that are not currently for sale in the
stores, and for the time being they are including textbooks. If you'd like to
participate, send the title of your book and the book's ISBN to Sarah Hahn-Gries,
Jags Bookstores' marketing manager (sbhahn@iupui.edu). For questions, call Sarah
at 274-7909.
