DON'T LET GO OF THAT TROPHY: 6th annual SCHOLAR CHIP CLASSIC,
11:30 a.m. at Hanging Tree Golf Club. Coordinated by the IUPUI Alumni Office,
this tourney pairs foursomes of alumni and students from the schools of
Dentistry, Law (Indianapolis), and Medicine, with the school teams competing
against one another. Dentistry's golfers, who won the Scholar Chip Classic
last summer and have claimed victory 3 out of 5 years, have no intention of
letting the trophy slip out of their grasp in 2002. The tourney supports the
professional schools' scholarship funds. There's still room for 4 more
faculty or alumni golfers to serve as sponsors and to team up with student
golfers. To register or for more information, call 274-5063.

People, Places, and Things
HONOR DENTIST. Dr. Henry Swenson, professor emeritus of periodontics,
has earned another award to add to his sizable collection: He is the
Indianapolis District Dental Society's 2002 Honor Dentist. The award is being
presented at the Indiana Dental Association's Awards Ceremony, held May 30
during the IDA annual session at the Marriott Downtown hotel.
DIPLOMAS AWARDED. Congratulations to two IUSD staff members who recently
completed their degree programs at IU. Judy Doyle, assistant to the chair
in the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, received an
Associate Degree in General Studies through the School of Continuing Studies in
May 2002; and Susan Beane, library services coordinator in the IUSD
Library, received a Master of Library Science degree from the IU/Indianapolis
School of Library and Information Science in Dec. 2001. Both women participated
in IUPUI's commencement exercises held downtown Indianapolis on May 12.
DIPLOMATE STATUS ACHIEVED. Dr. Vanchit John, assistant professor of
periodontics, has successfully completed requirements for board certification
and is now a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. John is also
serving as a guest editor for the Journal of the Indiana Dental Association
for a theme issue on periodontics scheduled for publication later this year.
A WHALE OF AN HONOR. Indiana University continues to build an international
reputation for leadership in dental caries research, as evidenced by a recent
announcement of the European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA) that
Indianapolis will host the group's international congress in July of 2005,
with Dr. George Stookey, distinguished professor of preventive and
community dentistry, chairing the session and serving in the lead role of
"co-president." ORCA, which usually holds its meetings in European
countries, is composed of a prestigious group of some 300 scientists around the
globe whose objectives are to promote research into dental caries and related
matters, to evaluate research findings, and to encourage the practical
application of those findings. ORCA produces the highly regarded Caries
Research journal. Two other future ORCA congresses will be chaired by
researchers who pursued postdoctoral fellowships at our Oral Health Research
Institute in recent years: Dr. Funda Yanikoglu will be co-president of
the 2004 meeting, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey; and Dr. Andrew Hall
will lead the 2007 meeting in Glasgow, Scotland.
LATEST IN THE I.C. SERIES. A few weeks ago, IUSD published a 372-page
hardback book titled The Changing Practice of Restorative Dentistry as
part of the series of books associated with the dental school's Indiana
Conference. The book's editor is Dr. E. Steven Duke, chair of the
Department of Restorative Dentistry. The Indiana Conference provides a forum for
dental scientists and educators to review and discuss topics of importance to
the advancement of dental science. The Changing Practice of Restorative
Dentistry contains the illustrated work of 24 researchers and scholars from
Canada, China, England, Japan, Liechtenstein, Sweden, and the U.S. Each
presented a paper at the Indiana Conference hosted at IU by Dr. Duke in the
summer of 2000. IU faculty who were among those featured at the conference and
whose manuscripts appear in the book are, in addition to Dr. Duke: Dr. Domenick
Zero, chair of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry (Drs. Carlos
González-Cabezas and Margherita Fontana, co-authors); Dr. Serkis
Isikbay, assistant professor of prosthodontics; Dr. Donald Newell,
associate professor of periodontics (Dr. Vanchit John, co-author); and
Dr. Bruce Matis, professor of operative dentistry.
TOP RESEARCH AWARD FOR DR. DOWSETT. Dr. Sherie Dowsett, a postdoctoral
research fellow in the Host Defense Research Laboratory, has been informed by
the IU Office of Research and University Graduate School that the dissertation
she prepared for her Ph.D. degree, awarded last year, is one of only 3
dissertations from a pool of 220 to receive the Esther L. Kinsley Ph.D.
Dissertation Award for 2001-2002. The Kinsley award, which carries a stipend, is
the highest honor for research that IU bestows upon its graduate students. Dr.
Dowsett's recognition for work deemed "truly outstanding" has been
given for research published under the title "Untreated Periodontal Disease
in Indigenous Populations of Guatemala, Central America: Epidemiological,
Genetic and Microbial Considerations." Dr. Dowsett's dissertation was
judged for originality, documentation, significance, accuracy, organization, and
style. She is the first student from the School of Dentistry to receive this
award.
APPLAUSE FOR OUR GRADUATES. The April and May calendars listed several
students who received end-of-program honors during a variety of awards
ceremonies held on campus this spring. In addition to the previously mentioned
honorees, the following members of the graduating classes received recognition
at the IUSD Graduation Awards Banquet, held at University Place Hotel on May 3.
Congratulations to the award winners and to all other members of the 2002
classes.
