a Box of
Crayons
Or a box of erasers, pencils, or rulers will help just as much. Now in its
9th season, the city's annual BACKPACK ATTACK is under way, with a city-wide
goal of collecting 425,000 school supply items in the next month â€" about 25,000
more than last year. In 2006, IUPUI was cited among all of Indy's participating
schools, organizations, and businesses for collecting the most supplies â€" more
than 22,000 items and $1,500+ in cash donations. The supplies are used to help
equip impoverished students in the Indianapolis Public Schools for the academic
year ahead.
The dental school's collection box is located on the first floor outside the
Development Office, DS110, and you can contribute until July 25. Learn more
about the types of supplies being sought at
http://www.iupui.edu/outreach/community/programs/bpa.
The School of Dentistry has given generously to this drive in the past. Please
help Indy ensure that all of its children are well prepared to put their best
foot forward on the first day of IPS's fall classes.

•••••
When the IU School of Dentistry hired its first librarian, Mabel Walker,
80 years ago this past May, she quickly delved into the task of developing a
service-oriented library. Her first modest collection of 917 books no doubt
consisted of scholarly works inherited from the school's "Museum and Faculty
Library" room, which dated back to at least 1881 and which by 1914 had evolved
into an unstaffed "Library and Reading Room."
Our Library developed a fine reputation early on and has successfully
maintained it by attracting skillful librarians and staff over the decades who
have expertly managed the collection and continually found ways to expand upon
patron services.
The saddest day in the Library's long history, and certainly one of the most
devastating in the school's history as well, involved two of these talented
people: Elizabeth "Libby" Halpin, assistant director for technical
services; and Mark Fitzgerald, cataloging senior assistant. Libby and
Mark tragically lost their lives in a highway accident 10 years ago today. They
had left the dental school in the morning to drive to North Manchester, Ind., to
attend a conference. They were involved in a collision with a semi-trailer truck
while passing through Wabash, about 15 miles south of their destination.
The remaining five members of 1997's Library staff wrote a beautiful tribute
to their valued colleagues, which became part of the IUPUI Staff Council records
and was also published in the IUSD Alumni Bulletin. "…Ms. Halpin was
instrumental in the automation of the School of Dentistry Library," they wrote.
"Her leadership and expertise in technical services, particularly in serials,
made the Library collection a singularly important resource on dentistry and the
dental health professions. But beyond that, it was Libby's grace, her intellect,
and her spirit which endeared her to the Library staff. She was well versed in
literature, art, film, and music, especially rock music. From Libby we gained a
greater appreciation for history, language, and culture. She was warm, vibrant,
and full of fun, and because she believed in us, she made us have confidence in
ourselves…."
Of Mark, the group wrote: "…In addition to his work at the school, he was a
talented musician and held the position of Minister of Music at Crestview
Christian Church…. At the time of his death, he was pursuing the Master's of
Music Technology degree at IUPUI…. After hearing of his death, a friend
commented that while we no longer have Mark's music, we will always have his
song. At the School of Dentistry Library, his laughter was our music. And
although that music has been taken from us, we will always have the memories of
the cheerful, joyful individual behind the laughter as an inspiration to us…."
Libby was employed in the Library for 11 years, and Mark for six. Neither
they, nor the significant contributions each made to our school, will ever be
forgotten by those of us who worked with Libby and Mark, and have felt the
enduring sadness of their loss.

THE BEST IN 2006. Who wrote the best paper published in the European
Journal of Orthodontics in the year 2006? According to the journal's
editorial board, that would be IUSD graduate and former faculty member Dr.
Riyad Al-Qawasmi (PhD/M'Ortho '04). The paper "Root Resorption Associated
with Orthodontic Force in Inbred Mice: Genetic Contributions," which Dr.
Al-Qawasmi wrote with several Indiana University colleagues, has received the
European Orthodontic Society's Beni Solow Award. The prize was announced at the
society's annual congress in Berlin in June. Dr. Al-Qawasmi's co-authors are
Marjorie Weaver and Dr. Tatiana Foroud of the medical school's
Medical and Molecular Genetics department, dental faculty Dr. James
Hartsfield Jr. and Dr. W. Eugene Roberts of the Oral Facial
Development department (now Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics), former IU
dental staff member Deidra Faust, and former IU dental faculty member Dr.
Eric Everett. Dr. Al-Qawasmi was frequently recognized for his
outstanding research while he was a student here. Today, he is in private
practice in Michigan. You can read the full text of this article by accessing
the electronic version of the European Journal of Orthodontics through
our Library Website: www.iusd.iupui.edu/Depts/Lib.
PASSING IT ON â€" THIS TIME, TO SHERI PUCKETT. In June, the dental school's
monthly "Pass It On" award recognizing dental assistants was bestowed on
Sheri Puckett, Comprehensive Care clinic supervisor. "Sheri is a liaison for
the staff dental assistants to the administration," says Patricia Capps,
clinical associate professor of dental assisting. "Every year, Sheri does
something nice for the comp care dental assistants each day during Dental
Assistants Recognition Week."
Sheri gets an enthusiastic review from dental assistant administrator
Patricia Huff, too. "Sheri handles a major role for the boards," Pat says.
"She makes sure that there are enough supplies for each student who takes the
boards. If you multiply 80-some students times 3 or 4 procedures per student,
the amount of supplies you need for one day is amazing! Sheri does this each and
every year with no problem. Sheri has the "old school" work ethic â€" she works
till the job is done. I know I can always count on her. I have an amazing group
of ladies that I count on to run the boards, and Sheri is on the top of the
list."
JUNE 2 A BUSY DAY FOR IUSD VOLUNTEERS. On June 2, while 16 dental
students stayed in town to volunteer for the Ruth Lilly Health Education
Center's community health awareness fair, 29 dental hygiene students headed for
Indiana State University in Terre Haute to lend a hand to athletes competing in
the state's annual Special Olympics.
The dental students and accompanying faculty and staff provided dental
screenings and education, including tooth-brushing instruction and
demonstrations of an intraoral camera, to participants of the Lilly center's
"Hip, Health, Hooray," a day-long program stressing high-tech, hands-on health
education for the public.
Volunteers included dental students Heather Dost, Rachel Dunlop, Matthew
Heck, Lauren Misamore, Sean Morgan, Natasha Ransom, Carly Rauch, and
Aaron Stump, all of the Class of 2010; Sanaz Amiran, Todd Larrabee,
Christina Popoviciu, Adam Rector, Sean Schafer, Brooke Shank, Kyle Shank,
and Arlene Yen, all of the Class of 2008; IU-Bloomington student
Tiffany Weaver; staff members Elvia Reyes-Martinez and Franklin
Miller of Oral Facial Development; and faculty members Dr. Joan Kowolik
of Oral Facial Development and Dr. Armando Soto of Preventive and
Community Dentistry.
In Terre Haute, the dental hygiene students and faculty teamed up with a
community dentist and members of IU's Community Dentistry division to promote
oral health and well-being among athletes with intellectual disabilities. Their
efforts were part of the Special Olympic Healthy Athletesâ„¢ initiative, which
also drew volunteers from IU's optometry school and the speech and hearing
department.
The dental hygiene students provided oral health education to the
participants and fitted many with protective mouth guards to help prevent
injuries during the Olympic competitions. Altogether, the dental team conducted
screenings for more than 200 athletes.
Volunteers included dental hygiene Class of 2008 students Jayme Brown,
Tonia Butcher, Molly Carrell, Laura D'Azzena, Julia Francis, Danielle Geer,
Jennifer Goffinet, Rachel Harris, Jacqueline Kohne, Danielle Koller, Megan
Large, Angilee Lewis, Brittney Martin, Ashley Mason, Eileen Mason, Kate Palmer,
Jennifer Perry, Amber Pugh, Michelle Quiring, Holly Schafer, Tina Shackelford,
Stephanie Shelby, Robyn Sorley, Tiffany Waldo, Jody Warner, Stacy Williams,
Melanie Wylie, Kasey Yoder, and Adina Zlovic. Also volunteering were
Professors Joyce Hudson and Nancy Young of Periodontics and Allied
Dental Programs and Dr. Karen Yoder of Preventive and Community
Dentistry; staff member Janis Miller of Preventive and Community
Dentistry; and Terre Haute dentist James Foulkes (DDS'80).
