This Month IUSD Welcomes the DDS Class of 2010
and All New Graduate Students and Hospital Residents

Recognition Month for IUSD's
Dental Laboratory Technicians

June 30 (Fri.)

COME SAY YOUR FAREWELLS this afternoon to two longtime employees of the dental school:

Hollie Flinta, a dental assistant in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology, is starting a new chapter of her life in Mooringsport, La. Come raise a piece of cake in her honor during a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. in DS S421.

And after you've said your goodbyes to Hollie, head to floor 2 to the Gorman Room (DS212) to join in a celebratory retirement reception for Celia Sweet, outpatient services coordinator in the Department of Oral Facial Development. Celia's reception is from 2 to 4.

Everyone is welcome.

LIBRARY RENOVATIONS ON SCHEDULE. As of this writing (June 30), the IUSD Library's repainting and recarpeting project continues on schedule, with plans for the facility to reopen on July 10. Watch for more information from the Library staff regarding the reopening and library hours for first semester.

MORE OPPORTUNTIES ON THE HORIZON TO "BEAT THE HEAT." The IUSD Staff Council hasn't yet put the finishing touches on plans for its next ice cream sale, but rest assured we haven't seen the last of the council's cool, yummy, and inexpensive treats in the summer of '06. "Stay tuned for email notices about the sales," says Kim Fields, Staff Council president.

KIDS AND CRAYONS AND YOU!

While children throughout Indy make the most of their summer vacation, you can help ensure they'll head back to school in the fall with the basic supplies all young learners need in their pursuit of an education. According to the United Way, up to 78 percent of Indianapolis Public Schools students start the school year with no or few school supplies, putting them at a disadvantage from day one. Please do what you can to help turn that statistic around. IUPUI is once again among the six Indiana organizations and institutions leading the annual BACKPACK ATTACK. Michelle Fatheree and the IUSD Staff Council are driving the School of Dentistry's participation in this charitable effort.

The next time you're shopping for your own family, please consider picking up a couple of items for children whose families are struggling to meet basic needs. The supplies will go to more than 25,000 K-12 students in IPS and to students throughout Marion County. Larger donations like backpacks are needed, but so are less expensive supplies such as erasers, rulers, and pencils. Any basic school supply is welcome.

Collection boxes have been conveniently located at the school on floors 1 through 4, and you've got nearly all month â€" till July 28 â€" to make your contribution. (Michelle empties the boxes each afternoon.)

The School of Dentistry has given generously to this drive in the past. Let's once again demonstrate how much we care about the well-being of the youngsters in our community.

The ACD's Indiana Section has been serving as a co-sponsor of the White Coat Ceremony since its inception in 2001. One of the Indiana Section's missions in recent years has been to support not only this special event for our incoming dental students but also other projects that are helpful to the school in further integrating ethics into the dental curriculum.

Another IU School of Dentistry grad takes the helm of the national organization at the close of the ACD annual session in Las Vegas this fall: Dr. Kerkhove's former classmate, H. Raymond Klein (DDS'62, Cert'64 Pediatric Dent) of Jacksonville, Fla.
