The key presenters include scientists and officials from Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, Scotland, Switzerland, and the U.S.

The conference is open to all interested parties, who will be allowed to participate in the workshop discussions at the discretion of the workshop leaders. Registration is required (www.indianaconference.org). For more information contact Dr. Stookey, 278-7876.

ORIENTATION for lst year dental students

6-9 (Wed., Sat.)

The IU School of Dentistry and its Oral Health Research Institute are helping Dr. George Stookey welcome researchers from many parts of the world as they convene at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown hotel for a global congress sponsored by the EUROPEAN ORGANISATION FOR CARIES RESEARCH (ORCA), the world's leading group of scientists in the field of cariology.

ORCA publishes the highly respected Caries Research journal, which the IUSD Library has recently made available to patrons through an online subscription.

Dr. Stookey, former OHRI director and IUSD associate dean for research and currently of IU's Emerging Technologies Center, is co-president and host of ORCA's 52nd Congress. More than three years in the making, the congress has been produced by Dr. Stookey and an Indianapolis Organizing Committee including current OHRI director and IUSD research associate dean Dr. Domenick Zero; Susan Crum, Publications; John Gosney, Technology Services; Theresa Norris, Emerging Technologies Center; and Melissa Mau and Judith Wilkinson, both of OHRI.

It is an exceptional honor for Indianapolis to serve as host city, and Dr. Stookey to serve as host scientist, for this prestigious meeting â€" Indy is only the second non-European city in ORCA's history to be chosen as a congress site. (The last U.S. meeting was in 1982, in Annapolis, Md.)

ORCA will present and discuss the results of 146 recent clinical investigations and studies pertaining to epidemiology, fluoride, microbiology and dental plaque, diagnostics, remineralization/demineralization, and erosion/hard tissues. The use of new technologies to detect caries at the earliest stages of development is one of several specialty areas of dental research being advanced by scientists at the Oral Health Research Institute, which has been under the direction of Dr. Zero since 1999.

A dozen researchers from the IUPUI campus are among the primary presenters, including Drs. Masatoshi Ando, Takashi Doi, Hafsteinn Eggertsson, AndrÈa Ferreira Zandon·, Margherita Fontana, Carlos Gonz·lez-Cabezas, Angeles Martinez-Mier, and Armando Soto-Rojas, all of the OHRI; Drs. Loren· Sa and Potjaman Totiam of Restorative Dentistry; and Drs. George Eckert and Barry Katz of the Department of Medicine. Many other IU scientists are participating as co-researchers.

The congress is open to anyone interested in cariology and caries research. Registration is required (www.orca2005.org). Contact Dr. Stookey for more information, 278-7876.

MAKING GOOD TIME ON "66." We mentioned in February's calendar that John Gosney, director of IUSD's Technology Services and an adjunct instructor for IUPUI's School of Liberal Arts, was preparing to teach a new IUPUI course this fall that will use Alternate Reality Gaming (ARG) to help students enrolled in the American Studies Program learn about the 1950s literary movement known as "The Beat Generation," featuring writers such as Jack Kerouac. The multidisciplinary game will consist of a virtual trip across America on that famous, now highly romanticized pre-interstate highway, Route 66.

Last winter John was also writing a book about ARG, which is now set for publication in July by Thomson Course Technology, an IT (Information Technology) publisher. Titled Beyond Reality: A Guide to Alternate Reality Gaming, the 304-page book not only shows you how to play but also lets you take a crack at a sample game. "It's the game I'll be using in my American Studies course," says John. "It's contextually based on Route 66 and the various Americana-related issues surrounding it."

An editorial review on Amazon's Website describes John's book as a "comprehensive introduction to (a) fascinating topic." It's been written to help newcomers learn the ropes while also providing more sophisticated players with extensive resource material.

THERE ONCE WERE 2 AUTHORS NAMED CHRISTEN. If you're looking for a bit of light and fluffy reading this summer as you and a tall glass of something cool head for your favorite porch, hammock, or beach blanket, you might want to try a book recently published by Joan and Arden Christen titled Limericks with a Smile: Dental, Oral and Facial Limericks of Yesterday and Today.

Joan, a volunteer research associate in Oral Biology, and Arden, professor emeritus of oral biology and a past president of the American Academy of the History of Dentistry, have co-written several books together, often on the topic of tobacco use and cessation. And now, just in time for summer, they've assembled a collection of humorous five-liners that poke a little fun at dentists, tooth fairies, store-bought teeth, spit, and a myriad assortment of other topics related to dentistry and the face.

Sifting through more than 10,000 previously published limericks penned as far back as the 1800s, the Christens identified 188 that touch on dental, oral, or facial themes. To that they added 384 of their own, most of which were composed by Joan. For example:

My cuspids have met with decay,
So I clench as I brush, night and day.
Now my jaws are uptight.
How ironic, my plight.
To save cuspids, I've caused TMJ.

Or, this snappy tribute to preventive dentistry:

In the mirror, my teeth look pristine,
And my gums are remarkably clean.
They are supple and pink,
Which concludes me to think,
I'm darned proud of my "chewing machine."

The Christens' book is currently being cataloged by the IU School of Dentistry's Library and will be available to patrons shortly.
