MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., HOLIDAY (school closed)

On April 4, 1968, the day of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination in Memphis, Tenn., Senator Robert Kennedy was stumping in Indiana in his bid for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. Kennedy learned of King’s murder as the senator was leaving a gathering at Muncie and heading to another campaign stop in the inner city of Indianapolis. Kennedy believed deeply in the protection of civil rights for all Americans and shared King’s commitment to the advancement of the civil rights movement. When Kennedy arrived at the political rally on the near-northside, it fell to him to break the tragic news to the large crowd. He set aside his campaign speech and gave instead a brief, from-the-heart talk that would become one of the notable speeches in U.S. history. Kennedy is credited in part for keeping Indianapolis calm on an evening when the news of King’s violent death led to rioting in more than 100 cities throughout the nation.

The site of the rally, at 1702 Broadway Street, which is about 3 miles from the dental school, became Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park in the 1990s. A monument honoring both leaders was erected there in 2005.

You can listen to Kennedy’s Indianapolis announcement of King’s death at http://www.history.com/media.do?action=clip&id=v1t14. And the full text of one of the world’s legendary speeches – King’s "I Have a Dream," given in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963 – is available at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/presidents/35_kennedy/psources/ps_dream.html.

One month after King’s death, Kennedy was once again campaigning in Indiana in preparation for the May 7 primary. While maneuvering through a crowd near his motorcade in Mishawaka, he fell against a car and hit his mouth. The New York Times ran an article titled "Kennedy Leapfrogs Through Indiana; Has Broken Tooth" and illustrated it with a close-up of Kennedy doing his best to address a Madison crowd with a cut lip and chipped tooth. On May 4, the senator’s tour of Indianapolis was delayed shortly so that he could slip into a dental chair for some quick emergency repair work. Kennedy was treated in private practice by IUSD faculty members Drs. Lehman Adams and LaForrest Garner, both now retired professors.

"Six Secret Service men in navy-blue suits cleared out the entire building to secure it," former IUSD staff member Marthena Smith recalled at the time of her retirement in the mid-1990s. Smith also served as a private practice dental assistant for Adams and Garner. "We all stood out in the parking lot until they allowed just the two practitioners and one assistant – me – to go inside."

After receiving a pin-reinforced resin to tide him over until he could see his own dentist, the senator posed for a picture with the group. He suggested they send the photo to his Washington office after the film was developed so that he could autograph and return it. Three days later, Kennedy won the Indiana primary election handily.

The dental office photo was sent to Washington for the autograph, but by then America was on the verge of suffering another tragic blow from an assassin, with the shooting of Kennedy on June 5, moments after his primary win in California. He died a day later.

The photo was never returned from Washington, and it’s unknown if Kennedy, who had been relentlessly campaigning in other states after leaving Indiana, ever got back to his East Coast office to see it.

People, Places & Things

EXPLORING DENTAL HYGIENE. With assistance from Prof. Nancy Young, director of Dental Hygiene, and members of the IUSD Dental Hygiene Class of 2008, the campus’ University College and Communications/Marketing office have created an IUPUI podcast that shines light on one of the most in-demand professions in the country. Targeting high school and college students, the Dental Hygiene podcast is part of a series that profiles educational programs in the Health and Life Sciences at IUPUI. You can view the 3-minute video, which includes on-camera interviews in the school’s Dental Hygiene Clinic, at http://www.iupui.edu/~iuihome/podcasts/?episode=148.

CRASH COURSE IN OBSTETRICS. According to a story posted on the American Dental Association Website, former Indiana University dental students Jeffrey Biggs and Keith Alvarez were best friends as members of the Class of 1996 and have remained pals over the years. They now have something else in common: Biggs, an orthodontist, and Alvarez, a general practitioner, recently found themselves on stork duty when Keith’s wife suddenly went into labor in the Alvarezes’ Westfield, Ind., home. To read Stacie Crozier’s story and see a picture of the docs posing with their "special delivery," go to http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/pubs/adanews/adanewsarticle.asp?articleid=2801.

WORKING THEIR WAY THRU THE COLLEGE: The current top tier of the prestigious American College of Dentists is composed in large part of Indiana University School of Dentistry grads: Of the 7 men who are now serving in elected or appointed leadership positions, 4 earned sheepskins at IU. They are Thomas Wickliffe (DDS’73, M’77 Pedo), of Billings, Mont., serving as vice president; Thomas Winkler III (M’70 Endo), of Boston, treasurer; H. Raymond Klein (DDS’62, Cert’64 Pedo), of Jacksonville, Fla., immediate past president; and Stephen Ralls (M’81 Perio), of McLean, Va., ACD executive director.

DR. MAUPOMÉ IN THE NEWS. If you missed seeing last month’s IUPUI/Regenstrief Institute news release (It’s Not Just a Kid Thing: Fluoridated Tap Water Benefits Older Adults Even More) or the subsequent Reuters Health story that appeared in numerous news outlets, including the Website of Scientific American), check out the release at http://info.iupui.edu/news/page/normal/3377.html. The project was led by Dr. Gerardo Maupomé, a professor of preventive and community dentistry at IU since 2005 and a Regenstrief Institute affiliated scientist. He initiated the project while he was previously employed as an investigator in the Economic, Social, and Health Services Program at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. The study’s results were published in the Fall 2007 issue of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry.

ACADEMIC BULLETIN ONLINE. The 2007-2009 IU School of Dentistry academic bulletin was published in December and can be accessed at http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iupui/dentistry/2007-2009/. It is available in electronic format only. This link is posted at several sites on the IUSD Website, including the Student Records and Admissions Office’s, and under "Academics" on Indiana University’s homepage. Issues dating back to 2001 are available online at http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iupui.

INDY LOOKIN’ GOOD IN JON McLAUGHLIN VIDEO (AND SO IS JON). Singer/songwriter Jon McLaughlin, of Anderson, Ind., has teamed up with the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association for a terrific video showcasing the kaleidoscope of opportunities the Hoosier capital offers its visitors. Check out this myriad collage of images of our great town – from Manning to the Children’s Museum – while McLaughlin sings "For You From Me," a cut from his newest release titled "Indiana": www.indy.org/jonmcl.
