Library Staff

3 (Tues.)

SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS for dental and graduate students. Regular library hours resume.

4 (Wed.)

STAFF COUNCIL, 12:15-12:45 p.m. in DS114

5 (Thurs.)

If it's Thursday, it must be pizza! In 2006, volunteers for the annual spring break service-learning experiences in Mexico and Ecuador are once again simplifying our lunch plans every single Thursday â€" from today all the way through April â€" by offering up a delicious PIZZA LUNCH for $5 in the cafeteria beginning at 11:30 a.m. (2 slices plus drink and dessert). These lunch-on-the-run Thursdays are one of the easiest and most economical ways you can help our students provide care to those in need in Mexico and Ecuador. So, don't pack that tired old cheese sandwich again today, and don't waste time and gas by heading out to a restaurant. A warm wedge of pizza right here at the dental school will take the chill out of January â€" and plump the coffers to fund our community service volunteers.

A dodge ball tournament has been arranged for tonight, and teams of 6 will be competing. For more details, contact second-year dental student Jeff Jones (jeffmjon@iupui.edu) or third-year dental student Kristin Harpham York (kharpham@iupui.edu).

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd president of the United States, was born on this day in 1882. Two and a half years before Franklin's birth, his father, James Roosevelt of New York, rented eight rooms of a building he owned at 147 East Market Street in downtown Indianapolis to a group of dentists. They used the rooms to establish the Indiana Dental College, the first dental school in the Hoosier state. The IDC became the IU School of Dentistry in 1925. The college, which originally counted 6 men as its entire student body, paid Mr. Roosevelt a monthly fee of $20.84.

People, Places & Things

DR. HAUG JOINS AAMP LEADERSHIP. Congratulations to Dr. Steven Haug, professor of prosthodontics, who has been elected executive secretary/treasurer of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics. Dr. Haug began his three-year term in this office during the academy's annual session in Los Angeles in October.

MORE ON THE HDA CONFERENCE. Last month, we reported that IU was well-represented at the recent annual session of the Hispanic Dental Association in San Antonio, and now we've learned that yet another faculty member contributed to the HDA program. Dr. LaQuia Walker, clinical assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, presented a poster titled "Parents' Preference for the Ethnicity of Their Child's Pediatric Dentist." The poster was based on research Dr. Walker undertook during her residency at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She joined IU's part-time faculty in 2004.

STAFF AWARD GOES TO THE "GO TO" MAN. As the dental school's network manager and senior security analyst, Brian Lich of Technology Services doesn't take his heavy responsibilities lightly. For his utmost dedication to the goal of keeping our computers secure and the school's servers working at "peak performance," Brian has become the latest winner of the IUSD Staff Council's Staff Excellence Award.

Frequently working extra in the evenings and on the weekends comes with Brian's territory, but, as an award nominator put it, Brian is "willing to do whatever the job takes to get it done."

Brian has been a member of IUSD's Technology Services team since 1998. He balances his job with his studies at IUPUI, where he is working toward a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology. He also finds the time to tackle advanced areas of study that lead to professional certification, such as the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer program.

"Brian recently spent a week away from his family in order to get trained on the administration and maintenance of our new network storage and backup systems," a nominator wrote. "Whenever something goes wrong with the network, Brian is our ‘go to' man."

And Brian was also praised for his expertise in general and a willingness to share it with others. "When there is a technical problem in our department that the rest of us can't fix, all eyes turn to Brian," a nominator stated. "He comes through for us consistently…."
