People, Places & Things
A STANDOUT IN THE "FIELDS." Congratulations to Kim Fields, who is the
first to receive the IUSD Staff Council's Staff Excellence Award in the new
year. As administrative secretary for the Dental Hygiene division of the
Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, Kim joined the IUSD staff
in 1999. A stack of nomination letters from her colleagues reflects how highly
she is valued within her department.
"Kim Fields is a shining example of a staff member who is ‘Simply the Best,'
" says one nominator, backing up that claim with a long list of examples of
Kim's on-the-job diligence and savvy. According to another nominator, Kim is
always willing to lend a hand to her co-workers, helping to restore order on
those many hectic days that verge on chaos. She is especially adept at keeping
the lines of communication running smoothly between her office and the clinical
staff.
"Kim sets high standards for her own work, and is always striving to
improve," says yet another nominator. As an IUPUI student, Kim is working on a
paralegal certificate and an associate's degree, with a long-term goal of
obtaining a bachelor's degree too. She has also recently taken advanced courses
in Microsoft Office software programs so that she can remain well prepared to
assist faculty and staff with their various projects, as needed.
Skillful with the written word, Kim manages correspondence with students and
others within and external to the school. "Her writing skills allow me to give
her the general content of a message and know that she will transform it into a
well-constructed letter or memo," says a nominator, who also finds Kim's
abilities as a "self-directed" employee invaluable. Among the most notable new
projects she coordinated and managed in 2003 was the ordering, invoicing, and
distribution of new uniforms for dental assisting and dental hygiene students.
In the words of a nominator: "This was a huge task, and she facilitated the
communication between the vendor, myself, and almost 100 students effectively so
that all parties were informed and satisfied with the transactions."
