SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS for all IUSD students
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO THE COMPREHENSIVE CARE CLINICS -- they officially opened their "doors" 10 years ago today.
TRAINING SESSIONS FOR THE AUDIO-VISUAL EQUIPMENT recently installed in DS S116 and DS S117, 10 a.m. (and repeated at 10:30 a.m.), with both sessions in DS S116.†Training is highly recommended for anyone who lectures or plans to lecture in these two rooms. During the week of Jan. 7, Technology Services will also be distributing a brief user guide for the new equipment.†"As always, we will be available to assist with questions/concerns -- especially during the first few weeks of the semester -- as everyone becomes familiar with this equipment," says John Gosney, Technology Services director. "Throughout January, we will also monitor the lectures given in S116 and S117 so that we are readily available to provide support."
Effective today, all LAPTOP CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT (including laptops used for lecture presentations) is being administered through the central technology office, DS 120. NOTE: Students will continue to report to the basement office (DS B16) for repairs and service to their personal machines.†Only the "loaner laptops" will be administered from the DS 120 office.

A brief moment of 'flame and glory.' Just a month after beginning a 13,500-mile national trek in Atlanta, Ga., the OLYMPIC TORCH is making its way into Indianapolis on Monday. Among the torchbearers taking turns lighting the Hoosier portion of the path to the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, is third-year dental student William "Rusty" Neal. "This is a tremendous honor for me," says Rusty, who is still a bit dazed by the fact that he's been selected as one of the 11,500 individuals to carry the flame during the Olympic Torch Relay. His girlfriend secretly nominated him, so Rusty had no idea he was even being considered until he received his letter of acceptance.
Indianapolis is geared up for a big celebration on Monument Circle Monday evening, and the torch will make a lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday before it heads out of town to its next destination, Terre Haute. Rusty's moment in the Olympic spotlight comes early Tuesday -- he's scheduled to be handed his 3-pound torch on Georgetown Road at 7:49 a.m., and he'll carry it between 28th and 30th streets (each participant bears the torch for about two-tenths of a mile).
The torch journeys through a total of 46 states before the Olympic cauldron in Salt Lake City is lighted on Feb. 8. The Olympic Torch last illuminated Indianapolis as it traveled to the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996. Local carriers of the flame attracted roadside well-wishers numbering in the thousands, and more than a few of them came out to cheer torchbearer Dr. Bruce Matis, professor of operative dentistry. Dr. Matis proudly held the flame aloft as he sprinted down a strip of Michigan Road -- a thrilling experience he described as a "dream come true." We hope you'll find your jog down Georgetown equally inspirational, Rusty!
