Black History on the Home Front. Time magazine named Indy’s own
Colts Coach Tony Dungy – the first African American coach to win the
Super Bowl – to its "Time 100" list in 2007.
Time’s list is composed of 100 of the most influential men and women
"whose power, talent, or moral example is transforming the world." Dungy’s
tribute, posted in the "Heroes and Pioneers" category, is written by Chicago
Bears Coach Lovie Smith, whose team lost the Super Bowl title to the
Colts in February ’07:

Give Kids a Smile. Although GIVE KIDS A SMILE doesn’t officially get
under way at the dental school until this morning, students, faculty, and staff
volunteers already devoted much of their time in January to prepping for and
promoting the American Dental Association’s annual nationwide event, which
provides free dental care to uninsured children from low-income families.
Dr. Judith Chin, Pediatric Dentistry, spent a good chunk of January
leading dental screening efforts in the community and making on-location and
in-studio TV appearances for WISH-TV and WXIN-TV (FOX 59). She was also
photographed by the Indianapolis Star. Dr. Ana Gossweiler,
Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, appeared on Indianapolis’ Spanish
language station, WIIH-TV (Univision).
GKAS is managed in the Hoosier state by the Indiana Dental Association. The
dental school is once again serving as one of Indiana’s key treatment sites,
with both the pediatric dentistry and first-floor screening/surgery clinics
involved. This year, IUSD welcomes many local children to the program, including
about 20 youngsters who along with their families are affiliated with the First
Baptist Church of Indianapolis as refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma). Thanks
to Preventive and Community Dentistry’s Michael Hoffman and Clif Duhn
kindly juggling their schedules on very short notice, staff member
Nyi-Nyi Tin was able to serve as an interpreter for the refugees during the
WISH-TV news segment (a nice reminder that "volunteerism" comes in many forms at
IUSD).
Private practitioners from central Indiana and as far away as Valparaiso will
be coming to the school to help out, as usual, and this year we welcome
Stacie Crozier, a reporter with the ADA News, who is traveling from
Chicago to Indianapolis to cover the dental school’s GKAS activities for her
publication.
Screening teams went to the First Baptist Church of Indianapolis and St.
Patrick’s Cathedral in January, with the following individuals contributing to
one or both of these pre-GKAS events:
Dental Students Sanaz Amiran, Sherry Benenhaley, Judith Hall, Christian
Kelly, Erin Langevin, Levi Schantz, and Huong Vu, Class of 2008;
Justin Broadbent, Ana Kristina David, John Jeppson, Joel Lanie, Kha Le, Amber
Leer, Brant Munden, Matthew Rasche, Cara Schriner, and Diana Teverbaugh,
Class of 2009; and Natasha Ransom, Class of 2010.
Staff Members Jeffrey Chandler, Pamela Elliott, Sharon Gwinn, and Amanda Stanley.
Faculty Members Prof. Melinda Meadows and Drs. Judith Chin, Andréa
Ferreira Zandoná, Ana Gossweiler, Jeffrey Platt, Marilia Sly, and Armando
Soto.
Also helping with the screenings were Dr. Renata Bertazzo,
Catherine (Mrs. Jeffrey) Platt, and Christina Platt.

The central division of the CARIES MANAGEMENT BY RISK ASSESSMENT (CAMBRA)
group meets this afternoon from 2 to 5 at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown
Chicago, and you are welcome to join them. Central CAMBRA, an outgrowth of a
group that started on the West Coast, is a coalition of about two dozen dental
schools whose goal is to facilitate the incorporation into clinical practice of
evidence-based strategies in the management of dental caries. "CAMBRA is a forum
that allows discussions on how we teach and assess skills related to caries
management in dental education, and how to link research findings with needs in
private and public domains to help address the caries needs of our populations,"
says Dr. Margherita Fontana, Preventive and Community Dentistry. The
CAMBRA meeting is being held as part of the Academy of Operative Dentistry
annual session, although you do not need to attend both. To register for CAMBRA,
send an email to Dr. Fontana (mfontan@iupui.edu).

His IU Degree Is a Mystery, Wrapped in a Riddle, Inside an Enigma. The 31st
annual AMERICAN CROSSWORD PUZZLE TOURNAMENT is held at the Brooklyn Bridge
Marriott in New York City this weekend, and it’s directed by Will Shortz,
a Crawfordsville, Ind., native and IU graduate who literally is in a class by
himself.
When Shortz graduated from IU-Bloomington in 1974, he became the world’s only
academically accredited "enigmatologist," a person who analyzes puzzles, codes,
and mysteries. While at IU, he was permitted to create his own unique bachelor’s
degree in enigmatology through the university’s Individualized Major Program in
Arts and Sciences. He’s been the editor since 1993 of the New York Times
Crossword, generally considered the toughest nut to crack by puzzle aficionados.
He’s also National Public Radio’s puzzlemaster (to hear last Sunday’s 6-minute
program, go to
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18425253). A
2006 documentary titled "Wordplay" features Shortz, several puzzle tournament
contestants, and some of Shortz’s famous fans, including Bill Clinton and
The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart. You can read more about Shortz in his IU
profile: http://alumni.indiana.edu/profiles/alumni/wshortz.shtml.
People, Places & Things
TOP HONORS FOR IUSD TECH. Congratulations to Carl "C.J." Lerner, an
animal research technician in the Bioresearch Facility, Preventive and Community
Dentistry, who was named "Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician of the Year"
for 2007 by the Indiana Branch of the American Association for Laboratory Animal
Science (AALAS). Established to honor AALAS-certified technicians who show a
high level of achievement in the field of laboratory animal science, the award
was presented during the Indiana Branch’s annual awards dinner, held at the
Valle Vista Conference Center in Greenwood, Ind., in December. An IUSD employee
since 2002, Lerner had some stiff competition from technicians working
throughout the state in research facilities at such places as Eli Lilly,
Bristol-Myers Squibb, IU, IUPUI, and Purdue University.
WINDSOR 3RD IUSD FACULTY MEMBER IN ADEA LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE. Dr. L. Jack
Windsor, Oral Biology, recently learned that he’s been accepted into the
American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute’s Class of 2009. He
follows Dr. Dominique Galli, Oral Biology, who is in the current
Leadership Institute class; and Dr. Joan Kowolik, Pediatric Dentistry,
who was a member of the ’04 class. ADEA describes the Leadership Institute,
first offered in 2000, as a year-long program designed to develop the nation’s
most promising individuals at academic dental institutions to become future
leaders in dental and higher education. The program has four phases, including a
legislative workshop that will require Dr. Windsor and his classmates to visit
congressional offices on Capitol Hill. The ’09 class commences at the March ’08
ADEA annual session in Dallas and ends at ADEA’s ’09 session in Phoenix.
THESE "SANTA’S HELPERS" USE MOUTH MIRRORS AND EXPLORERS TO REACH OUT TO LOCAL
LATINO YOUNGSTERS. During the past holiday season IUSD and its SEAL INDIANA
program were invited to participate in the Latino Community Development
Corporation’s 7th annual "Santa comes to town, mi salud" Health Fair on December
19th at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. "The event provided holiday meals, toys,
personal care packages, and health services to more than 1,400 less fortunate
Latino families, including 5,000 children during this one-day event," says Dr.
Armando Soto, Preventive and Community Dentistry. He coordinated IUSD’s
participation with the help and support of the department’s Dr. Karen Yoder,
Jan Miller, and B.J. Hoge. Working primarily with a group of faculty
and student volunteers, the team screened 110 children ages 1 to 16, 35% of whom
were found to have dental decay. Families were informed of the pediatric dental
services offered at IU and given information about the Binational/Cross-Cultural
Health Enhancement Center. The participants received oral health instruction,
toothpaste, and brushes, and most of the eligible youngsters also received a
fluoride varnish application.
Others volunteering at the Latino Community Health Fair included dental
students Abigail VanSlambrouck (’08); Cara Schriner (’09), Diana Teverbaugh
(’09), and Bradley Tew (’10); dental hygiene student Eileen Mason
(’08); IUSD faculty Drs. Stuart Schrader and Odette Zero; Dr.
Cynthia Dittman, Greenwood, Ind.; and Dr. James Watson from
the IUPUI Department of Anthropology.
GEARING UP FOR THE DENTAL SUMMER INSTITUTE. Traci Adams-Wilson,
Diversity Support Services, will use funds she is receiving from a local agency
to produce IUSD’s Dental Summer Institute (DSI) for high school and college
students who have an interest in learning more about careers in dentistry.
Funded by the Metropolitan Indianapolis-Central Indiana Area Health Education
Center, a program for children from Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School,
to be held June 9-13, will be followed by another for IUPUI’s Urban
Pre-Dentistry Club (UPDC), June 23-27. At least 40 youth are expected to
participate in the DSI, which will include lectures, PBLs, and hands-on
experiences in dentistry. More than 25 IUSD faculty and staff have already
signed on as presenters.
The UPDC’s goal is to promote interest and foster success in dental careers
among students who come from ethnic, racial, or socioeconomic populations whose
oral healthcare needs are underserved. "These students are mostly African
American and Hispanic American," says Adams-Wilson, who notes that the program
is open to others as well. Anyone who’d like to know more about the program
should contact the Diversity Support Services office (274-7052;
tadams@iupui.edu).
The fee for the Summer Dental Institute is $100 per student.
