Black History Month Kickoff
A Reception for IUPUI Students, Staff, and Faculty
Feb. 1, 2:30-4:30 p.m., University College 115
Munching Pizza for a Worthy Cause. Every time you buy a very reasonably
priced lunch during the Alternative Spring Break fundraisers, you help the
students who are volunteering for an important service-learning program move one
step closer to their goal. Healthcare mission trips are planned in March for
Mexico and Ecuador – and, for the first time, for Brazil and Guatemala, also. If
pizza and chicken sandwiches aren’t your thing, a donation would be most welcome
– checks payable to the IU Foundation (Service Learning Account 38-D008-54-6)
and given to Pamela Lovejoy in the Office of Development, DS110.
Here are the 21 ASB student volunteers you’ll be helping in 2007 if you stop
by the dental school’s basement lounge from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays to
buy lunch this semester:

Wear Your Colts Blue,
and Love Your Heart, Too! Today is the American
Heart Association’s NATIONAL WEAR
RED DAY. The association asks all Colts fans to
add a splash of red to their blue apparel on the Friday preceding Super Bowl
Sunday in support of the campaign against heart disease in women.
The dental school is once again serving as a treatment site – and as one of
the key sites in Indiana – for the American Dental Association’s nationwide GIVE
KIDS A SMILE program, which provides free dental care to children from
low-income families. The event will be held in the screening and pediatric
dentistry clinics throughout the day. Give Kids a Smile is sponsored locally by
the Indiana Dental Association, which reports that at least 220 dentists around
Indiana will also be opening their offices to children in need this year. Some
Hoosier private practitioners will be coming to the school, as usual, to join
forces with the faculty, staff, and student volunteers, who together assisted 56
youngsters last year.
We are proud to report that IU dental graduate Jeff Dalin (DDS’80), of
St. Louis, is one of the founders of Give Kids a Smile. In February 2002, the
Greater St. Louis Dental Society treated nearly 400 children during the first
Give Kids a Smile program. The event went nationwide the following year, and
this year the ADA anticipates that 500,000 or more underprivileged children will
be treated. As Dr. Dalin told the ADA Update newsletter last October:
"Give Kids a Smile is a win-win situation for everyone involved. We get to do a
tremendous amount of good for kids who usually have no other source of care, we
have coalitions with other organizations in our community to leverage the scope
of our program, and we have become trusted advocates for access to care for the
underserved."

People, Places, and Things
BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Keep your eye on the IUPUI calendar for a description of
February events and programs on campus that will celebrate Black History Month.
Oddly enough, two African Americans who are among the most famous people on
the planet – Oprah Winfrey and the Rev. Jesse Jackson – both have
ties to one of Indiana’s teensiest towns: Rolling Prairie. So small it often
doesn’t show up on maps, Rolling is located between LaPorte and South Bend, and
is just a hop and a skip from the Michigan border.
For 16 years, until 2004, Ms. Winfrey owned a beautiful 164-acre estate on
the outskirts of Rolling, which is a quick and convenient helicopter ride from
her main residence and TV show in Chicago.
Rev. Jackson’s sons were enrolled as youngsters in a private academy in
Rolling Prairie. One son, Jesse Jackson Jr., is now an Illinois
congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Forbe’s magazine reported that Ms. Winfrey was the wealthiest African
American of the 20th century and the world’s only Black billionaire
for three years. About a century earlier, another woman with Hoosier
connections, Madam C.J. Walker, was the first African American woman to
become a millionaire. The Walker Theatre, on the northeast edge of IUPUI, is
named for Madam Walker, who was an Indianapolis manufacturer and a pioneer in
the hair products industry.
You can read more about Madam Walker at
http://www.madamecjwalker.com. And
the Biography Channel has a fascinating and informative Website feature titled
"Celebrating Our Black History" running this month – check it out at

AUTHOR, AUTHOR. The Blackwell Publishing house has announced its February
2007 premiere of a book written by retired IUSD faculty member Dr. David
Vandersall, who served on the periodontic faculty from 1980 to 2002. The
Concise Encyclopedia of Periodontology is a 232-page, illustrated paperback
that is well-suited as an adjunct periodontic textbook for students at every
level of training, including those enrolled in dental hygiene and
graduate/postgraduate studies. Referring to Dr. Vandersall’s book as "his life’s
work," the publisher calls the encyclopedia an "indispensable guide to the
terminology, technical vocabulary, classic clinical cases, and literature of
periodontology."
Dr. Vandersall received his periodontic training at the Eastman Dental Center
and University of Rochester. He is a diplomate and former director of the
American Board of Periodontology. In 1998, he served as guest editor for two
volumes of the Dental Clinics of North America that focused on advances
in periodontics.
POSTER DEADLINE. March 6 is Dental Illustrations’ deadline for submitting
posters to be presented at the upcoming International Association for Dental
Research and American Association for Dental Research meetings in New Orleans.
This year, posters will be made with the school’s new large-format printer. The
cost is $20, and will be charged to your department. An account number is needed
before printing can begin. The deadline must be observed. Templates for poster
layouts are available on the Common I Drive under ILLUS>External>Poster
Templates. For more information about Dental Illustrations’ poster services,
contact Mark Dirlam, division supervisor, at
mdirlam@iupui.edu.
GRADUATING STUDENTS, MARK YOUR MARCH CALENDARS. Any student graduating in
2007 who borrowed a federal and/or private loan while enrolled at IUSD is
required to attend a Financial Aid Exit Interview on March 20 from 8 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. in DS S116. This is a graduation requirement. Students should
plan to bring their laptops for an interactive portion of the program. Food will
be provided.
WORKING ON DEGREE #2. We recently checked in with Kim Fields, a past
recipient of an IUSD Staff Council college scholarship, to see what she’s been
up to, educationally speaking. Kim, the Office of Academic Affairs’ academic
administrative specialist, reports that she graduated with distinction from the
IUPUI Associate of Arts in General Studies degree program in August 2006, after
taking classes part time for six years.
"I waited to go back to school until my son was out of high school," Kim
says. "He and I have been attending together, although at different schools. He
is almost finished with his bachelor’s degree. He attends Northern Kentucky
University, but we both attended IUPUI for one semester together, which was
great fun for me. I have regretted not finishing when I was younger, but it was
worth it to attend the same time as my son. He enjoys it, too, and is proud of
me for plugging away."
Kim is using the present tense when she discusses college because she isn’t
resting on her laurels as a new member of the IUPUI alumni – she is, in fact,
back in school and has in her sights a bachelor’s degree, either in general
studies or business. This semester she’s taking two courses, Abnormal Psychology
and Special Event Management.
During her previous degree program, Kim says she was honored to be asked by
the IUPUI Partners in Career and Professional Development to serve as a panelist
for a campus discussion titled "Finding Your Niche; Life’s Choices and Where
They Take You." She is also a past recipient of IUPUI’s Carol D. Nathan
Scholarship for college-enrolled staff.
Congratulations on degree #1, Kim, and best of luck to you as you journey
through your baccalaureate studies.
DENTAL FACULTY RECEIVE SIGNATURE CENTER GRANTS. We also congratulate School
of Dentistry faculty whose proposals are among the 19 (of a total of 71)
recently funded under IUPUI’s new Signature Center initiative.
"This initiative is intended to take IUPUI’s research effort to a much higher
level by helping to create a significant number of Signature Centers which will
stand out like skyscrapers over the surrounding landscape," said Dr. Uday
Sukhatme, IUPUI executive vice chancellor and dean of the faculties. Such
structures need support, and the Signature Center initiative is designed to
provide approximately $7 million of flexible money over the next three years
(equally shared between the central administration and the academic units), he
said.
The administration envisions unique and distinctive Signature Centers that
take advantage of IUPUI’s urban location and involve partnerships with local
community and cultural organizations.
Those attributes certainly apply to the dental school proposals, as follows:
Binational/Cross-Cultural Health Enhancement Center
Center Director: Dr. Angeles Martínez-Mier, assistant professor of
preventive and community dentistry
Dental Collaborators: Preventive and Community Dentistry faculty Dr.
Gerardo Maupomé, professor; Dr. Armando Soto, assistant professor;
and Dr. Karen Yoder, associate professor
Schools Collaborating with IUSD: Medicine, Nursing, Liberal Arts
Vision for Proposed Center: This center will have an academic focus on
research on binational health issues of recent immigrants to the state of
Indiana and of the rural communities in Mexico from where those immigrants come.
Specifically, the center will focus its efforts on oral health and nutrition
including behaviors and social determinants of health in those two areas and
related conditions such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Research initiatives
will be in the following areas: dental, medical, nursing, socio-behavioral
sciences, and public health. The overall goal of the center is to understand the
web of interactions across biological, cultural, behavioral and demographic
domains and to advance knowledge in these areas with real-life, practical
applications to the future of the state of Indiana.
Tobacco Cessation and Biobehavioral Center
Center Co-Directors: Dr. Jack Windsor, associate professor of oral
biology; and Dr. Richard Gregory, professor of oral biology
Dental Collaborators: Oral Biology faculty Dr. Arden Christen,
professor emeritus; and Dr. Byron Olson, professor
School Collaborating with IUSD: Medicine
Vision for Proposed Center: This center will bring researchers together
from different disciplines to better understand the mechanisms and biology of
the effects of tobacco use, as well as its control, prevention, and cessation.
The research of the center will encompass multiple disciplines involving basic
tobacco-related biological research, behavioral research, civic engagement, and
teaching and learning. The center will also focus on ways to eliminate or reduce
minority health disparities related to tobacco use in order to prevent and
reduce the use of tobacco by minorities, low-income individuals, the chemically
addicted, pregnant women, children, youth, and other at-risk populations with
tobacco-related health issues.
In addition, the dental school will serve as a collaborator, along with the
science and nursing schools, on one of the medical school’s funded proposals:
IU Center for Assessing, Understanding, and Managing Pain
Center Director: Dr. Kurt Kroenke of the School of Medicine
Dental Collaborator: Dr. Jeffrey Bennett, professor of oral and
maxillofacial surgery
Vision for Proposed Center: This center will enhance pain research,
foster a culture of interaction, and promote collaboration among researchers
across several IUPUI schools and existing centers to stimulate new approaches to
address pain. To this end, the center’s goals include: developing a
comprehensive pain research agenda that brings the researchers’ findings to the
clinic or bedside as quickly as possible; increasing visibility for pain
research within the IUPUI campus and broader community of scientists,
clinicians, policy makers, and patient advocacy groups; and creating key
partnerships between other academic institutions, professional organizations,
and private industry to share resources and create research synergy.
Other dentally related proposals receiving high marks during this first round
of funding were submitted by proposed center director Elizabeth Hughes,
clinical associate professor of dental hygiene (Center for Collaborative Oral
Health Research, Education, and Practice); and proposed center director Dr.
Jie Chen, professor of mechanical engineering, School of Engineering and
Technology, and adjunct professor of orthodontics, School of Dentistry (Center
for Advanced Orthodontic Research, with engineering serving as the primary
school). These projects are eligible to be resubmitted for consideration during
the second round of funding, which takes place in 2008.
For a full report of all 19 funded proposals, go to
http://www.iupui.edu/news/releases/070118_signature_centers.htm.
