Fourth annual GIVE KIDS A SMILE program brings community dentists to the
dental school today to join our students and faculty in providing free dental
treatment to low-income children. Sponsored by the American Dental Association
and locally by the Indiana Dental Association, this program is taking place in
dental offices, dental schools, and community clinics throughout the nation. Our
dental school is serving as one of Indiana’s key sites, with patients being seen
in the first-floor clinic areas and the pediatric dentistry clinic on floor two.
Dr. Judith Chin, assistant professor of preventive and community
dentistry, is once again serving with excellence as the community spokesperson
for this event. This year, she conducted pre-event television interviews with
Angela Cain of WTHR on Jan. 23 and with morning news co-anchors Tracy
Forner and Angela Ganote of Fox 59 on Jan. 30.

Electricity 101. Thomas Alva Edison was born on this day in 1847. He
invented the incandescent light bulb in 1879, the same year a group of Hoosier
dentists “invented” the Indiana Dental College. According to Dr. Jack Carr’s
History of the Indiana Dental College, the first electric streetlights in
Indianapolis were installed in 1886 on exceedingly tall poles as high as 153
feet. In the 1880s, the roster of courses for third-year dental students looked
a lot like it does today, with one exception: Amidst their classes on
orthodontia, pathology, prosthetics, and operative dentistry, the students also
were required to enroll in the fundamentals of electricity.

Everything’s Coming Up (Carnations and) Roses.
The Staff Council’s extraordinarily successful and time-honored VALENTINE’S DAY
FLOWER SALE is in full bloom today. Capture that certain someone’s attention by
wearing your heart on your sleeve, a carnation in your buttonhole, and a rose in
your hair. And never underestimate the power and the beauty of a dozen
breathtaking roses, or just one solitary flower. Don’t ask me how the Staff
Council has managed to maintain these low, low prices, but we certainly thank
the council reps for being as sensitive about our wallets as they are dedicated
in sponsoring this much-looked-forward-to sale each year. Carnations are $1 a
piece, roses are $3, and bud vases are $2 (small) and $5 (large). “The sale
begins at 7:30 a.m. in the main lobby, and lasts until the end of the day or
until we sell out,” says Carol Hawkins, administrative assistant in
pediatric dentistry at Riley Hospital. Let’s all do our best to make sure every
flower has a home by 5 p.m. If you’ve got any questions, contact Carol at
caahawki@iupui.edu or 278-4238.
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone.

People, Places & Things
HALL OF FAMER. Congratulations to IU dental alumnus and pediatric dentist
Hubbard “Hub” Hougland (DDS’63), Muncie, Ind., who will be inducted into the
Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame during ceremonies at the Primo Banquet Hall in
Indianapolis in March. Back in high school in the 1950s, Hub was a Scottsburg
Warrior, and the first Scottsburg player to score more than 1,000 points in a
career. More than a half century later, his record of 1,323 points is still the
Warriors’ fourth all-time highest. Hub and his teammates won three sectional
titles in a row (1953-1955). He also was a standout later on as a college player
at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, where he set a single season field goal
accuracy record in his third year.
Dr. Hougland isn’t the only IUSD alumnus who has excelled in sports. There
are many others, including four whose accomplishments are currently featured in
the display case across the hall from Technology Services on the dental school’s
first floor: former Indiana Pacer Steve Green (DDS’84), All-American
Diver Charee Campbell (DDS’02, M/Orthodontics ’05), former Indianapolis
500 driver Jack Miller (DDS’92), and Olympic long-jump gold medalist
Gregory Bell (DDS’61). Jean Frantz, library services representative,
and Mark Dirlam have done an outstanding job of preparing this display —
be sure to check it out.
ALUMNI AT OUR FINGERTIPS. Speaking of IUSD alumni, if you’ve ever needed to
know a graduate’s mailing address, or the year he or she graduated, there’s an
IU Website that brings this information to your fingertips. The Indiana
University Alumni Directory is posted at
https://alumni.indiana.edu/directory/index.php.
It may be used by IU alumni, faculty, students, and staff for IU-related
business and for personal, non-commercial communications.
IUPUI STAFF RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES. Nominations for IUPUI’s Gerald L.
Bepko Staff Council Spirit Award are being accepted until March 3. The award,
which is presented each year at the Chancellor’s Convocation in October, is
given to full-time appointed staff employees or teams of employees who best
exemplify teamwork and who contribute to the mission and strategic initiatives
of the university as well as the community. The IUPUI Staff Council has also
issued an invitation to all IUPUI staff employees to submit information about
how they “Make a Difference” in the IUPUI workforce or in the community.
Selected staffers will be recognized on the IUPUI Staff Council Website during
Staff Council Awareness Month in March. Nominations are being accepted through
March 3. You’ll find the submission forms and more information about both these
opportunities at http://www.iupui.edu/~scouncil/home.html.
