An alternative lunch from the Alternative Spring Break Team. Sack lunches
can leak or get squishy, vending machines can steal your quarters, and
restaurants can dish up sloooooooooow service. If you're looking for a quick and
economical alternative to your noonday meal – not just today but on Thursdays
throughout spring semester – you need journey no further than to the dental
school's basement lounge for a yummy taste of pizza pie (not one but two whole
slices). A fiver also gets you a drink, a dessert, and the satisfaction of
knowing that you've helped support IUSD's student volunteers in their spring
break quest to provide dental services to underserved communities in Mexico,
Ecuador, Guatemala, and Brazil. Thursday lunch options will include chicken
sandwiches with chips beginning in January. Meals are available from 11:30 a.m.

Doorless? Doesn't matter. Judging of the HOLIDAY DOOR DECORATING CONTEST
takes place this morning. Instead of a door, you can also decorate another area
of your office or clinic that suits your environment better. Don't forget to
remove all decorations before you leave for the holidays.
Pass the buffet plates – it's time to party! DEAN GOLDBLATT'S IUSD HOLIDAY PARTY
kicks off at 3 this afternoon in
the student lounge and runs till 5. All students, staff, and faculty are
invited. In addition to offering up scrumptious food, the names of the door
decorating contest winners, and a chance to chat with many of our former
co-workers, who will be joining us as guests, this annual get-together provides
a unique setting for IUSD employees to give dental students and graduate
students a proper send-off as they head into the holiday break, and to wish the
best of luck to dental hygiene and dental assisting students as they head into
their final exams. It's also a perfect time for students to recognize and
acknowledge the efforts of the school's faculty and staff. Come spend some time
in the company of your IUSD friends, colleagues, and classmates.

Desperate
Dentistry on a Deserted Island. The movie Cast Away, which starred Tom Hanks as a Federal Express executive who washes onto the shores of an
uninhabited tropical island after surviving a Fed Ex plane crash, was released
on this day in 2000. It's a riveting adventure story – and one that, oddly
enough, underscores the virtues of practicing good preventive dentistry. It's
not exactly the type of story that dental procedures ordinarily find their way
into, but in this case the castaway is forced to assume the dual roles of both
dentist and patient after suffering the prolonged effects of a badly infected
tooth (a toothache he had been giving back-burner consideration to during his
hectic life in the Fed Ex business). In a "do not try this at home, or anywhere
else" cringe-worthy dental scene that renews our appreciation for nice,
antiseptic dental offices and knowledgeable, caring dental teams, the castaway
excises the tooth by pounding against it with the only surgical instrument he
has handy: the blade of an ice skate that had washed ashore in a Fed Ex delivery
box.

People, Places & Things
A DISTINGUISHED PLACE IN THE HALL OF FAME FOR MAYNARD K. HINE.
Indiana University's longest-serving dean of dentistry was posthumously inducted
into the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA) International Hall of Fame of
Dentistry this fall, becoming only the 20th person to receive this
prestigious recognition. The honor places Dr. Maynard Hine, who served as
dean (1945-68) and as first chancellor of IUPUI (1969-73), in the company of
such historical luminaries as Dr. Fauchard and Dr. G.V. Black. The
academy chooses candidates whose distinguished records of service are known by
the dental profession throughout the world. The Hall of Fame actually has two
locations: at the French Federation of Dentistry in Paris and at the Samuel D.
Harris National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, Md. In addition to honoring
Dr. Hine at these sites, the PFA has given the IU School of Dentistry a plaque
for permanent display at the school. The plaque was presented in October at the
Fall Dental Alumni Conference, with Dr. Hine's son, Dr. William Hine, and
grandsons, Drs. William Hine Jr. and Charles Hine, among the
family members who participated in the Indianapolis tribute. You can see the
plaque and read more about Dr. Hine's extraordinary career at
http://www.fauchard.org/awards/fame21.htm.
HONORS FOR COOK, KOWOLIK, AND JOHN. At the 2007 faculty and staff
conferences, three outstanding individuals were honored for their contributions
to IUSD.
The Indiana Dental Association's 2007 teaching awards were presented to Drs.
Vanchit John and Joan Kowolik.
Dr. Kowolik, assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, was named the IDA's
Outstanding Teacher, an award that recognizes an exceptional record of teaching
based on the previous academic year. Dr. Kowolik was recently appointed director
of the predoctoral pediatric dentistry program, after serving as the interim
director two years. Her busy teaching schedule includes the pediatric dentistry
clinic and technique course, the pediatric dentistry treatment planning course,
group-learning activities (including heavy involvement in case writing), Service
Learning in the Community Oral Health elective, and problem-based learning. She
was an invited Panel Chair during the American Dental Education Association's
Council of Deans meeting on "Reformation of Dental Education" last year. She has
also served as councilor of ADEA's Pediatric Dentistry Section, representing the
section at ADEA's annual and interim meetings. She routinely receives high
quality evaluations from her students, two of whom received awards last year
directly related to her mentorship. Dr. Kowolik received the prestigious 2007
ADEA/Sunstar Americas Inc./Harry W. Bruce, Jr. Legislative Fellowship, and has
used the $15,000 stipend this year to travel back and forth from Washington,
D.C., to work on legislative issues.
Dr. John, associate professor of periodontics and interim chair of
Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, was named the IDA's Outstanding Faculty
Member in recognition of the impressive work that he has done since joining the
tenure-track faculty in 1998. In addition to his many creative teaching
activities and assignments, as director of the predoctoral periodontics program
Dr. John has utilized OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations) in his
teaching of the non-surgical periodontal module. He was particularly busy this
past year serving the Indianapolis District Dental Society as a board member,
IDA delegate, Focus and Leadership Group participant, and head of the
Communications Committee. Dr. John is a diplomate of the American Board of
Periodontology and a fellow of the International College of Dentists. He served
this year as president of the Indiana Society of Periodontists and received an
Educator Award in 2006 from the American Academy of Periodontology. As a member
of the AAP's Education Committee, he is involved with the focus and direction of
his specialty at a national level. Several of IU's graduating dental classes
have honored Dr. John by inviting him to serve as a hooder at their
post-commencement ceremonies.
In addition to the IDA awards, two Johnson Public Health Community Service
awards were bestowed at the faculty and staff conferences. Dr. Joan Kowolik
received the Johnson faculty award for her extensive involvement in
service-learning opportunities for IUSD's students, including such activities as
mentoring volunteers at the annual Westside Health Fair and serving as faculty
advisor to the IUSD Kids' Club. Staff member Anita Cook, a dental
assistant with administrative duties in the Department of Oral Surgery and
Hospital Dentistry, received the Johnson staff award for her exceptional support
of the fundraising projects that make it possible for IUSD's students to
participate in Alternative Spring Break service-learning missions to Brazil,
Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. Anita's hard work as a volunteer ASB fundraiser
is an ideal example of how each of us at the dental school can reach beyond the
boundaries of our own jobs to find important additional roles to play in the
education of our students.
POD SQUAD. A wealth of helpful information about the IU School of Dentistry's
Library services and policies is now at your fingertips (and in your ear buds)
and available morning, noon, and night, thanks to a new series of
Library-related podcasts prepared by IUSD Librarian Jan Cox and Ryan
Williams, digital multimedia specialist in Technology Services. The series
can be accessed on iPods and other audio devices and computers as either audio
or video programs. Check it out:

WESTSIDE STORY. Indy's annual Westside Health Fair attracted more than 600
people on Oct. 20, including more than 60 children who received dental
screenings and oral health education from a group of IUSD student and staff
volunteers led by faculty mentor Dr. Joan Kowolik. Participating in the
Saturday event were Elvia Reyes-Martinez, a dental assistant in Pediatric
Dentistry, and dental students Katie Buskirk ('09), the group's
organizer, and Armen Balasanyan ('09), Jill Carson ('11), Erin
Coleman ('09), Katie Cummins ('10), Tamara Smith ('09), and
Nicole Weddell ('08).

STUDENT RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS. The IUSD Student Research Group for
predoctoral students has a new set of officers – these students would be happy
to fill you in on the details if you're thinking of joining the SRG and would
like to know more about the group's activities: Luciana Kano-Wilson ('09)
– president; Tamara Smith ('09) – vice president; and Katie Buskirk
('09) – secretary-treasurer.
The IUSD Graduate Student Council has 14 representatives this year, two from
each graduate program: Marcus Ditto and Diana Kozlowski (Pediatric
Dentistry); Richard Adcook and Swati Chitre (Operative Dentistry);
Shane Christensen and Paul Ley (Endodontics); Amit Patel
and Sivaraman Prakasam (Periodontics); Nouri Al-Qenaei and
Hashem Ridha (Prosthodontics); Wallie McCarlie and Weiping Zhang
(Dental Science); and Catherine Kroczek and Derrick Young
(Orthodontics). Dr. Kozlowski represents the group in the IUPUI Graduate Student
Organization, and Drs. Ley and McCarlie are alternate GSO reps.
Seven dental students are currently enrolled in the IU dental school's
inaugural Research Honors Program: Katie Buskirk, Luciana Kano-Wilson,
and Tamara Smith of the Class of 2009; and Michael Laszynski, Nisha
Mehta, Stephen Powell, and Aaron Stump of the Class of 2010. The
students are participating in workshops/seminars covering such topics as
experimental design, research ethics, and biostatistics. Students who complete
the three-year program will graduate from dental school with Research Honors.
IUSD TAKES A CROSS-CULTURAL VIEW OF ORAL HEALTHCARE. Two events this fall
underscored the commitment of our faculty, students, and staff to advance IUSD's
interest in collaborating with the global community to address healthcare and
education issues on an ongoing basis. During the university's Celebrate IU Week,
Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier of the Preventive and Community Dentistry
faculty assumed a prominent role as one of six speakers, IUPUI Chancellor
Charles Bantz among them, at an Indianapolis symposium titled "Higher
Education: A Change Agent for International Development." Dr. Martinez-Mier and
Dr. Luis Gil Borja, rector of the Autonomous University of the State of
Hidalgo, Mexico, discussed a partnership between the two universities that
strives to prepare future health providers in their care of Spanish-speaking
patients in both the U.S. and Mexico. Dr. Martinez-Mier is the longtime
co-director of IU's Calnali International Service-Learning Project, the
multidisciplinary team of faculty and students that annually devotes Spring
Break to caring for underserved populations in this rural area of Mexico. Other
IUSD faculty participating in the symposium included Dean Lawrence Goldblatt,
Dr. Timothy Carlson of Restorative Dentistry, and Drs. Gerardo
Maupomé, Armando Soto, Karen Yoder, and Keith Yoder of Preventive and
Community Dentistry.
Also, IUSD's Preventive and Community Dentistry department once again helped
ensure the success of the local component of Binational Health Week, an annual
series of health promotion and education activities taking place in the U.S.,
Mexico, Canada, Guatemala, and El Salvador. BHW events provide migrant
Latin/Hispanic and Mexican populations with medical screenings, healthcare
referrals, treatment services, and information about disease prevention. Dr.
Armando Soto coordinated this year's dental event, held Oct. 13 at the
Citizens Health Center dental clinic in Indianapolis, and he also served along
with Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier on the local BHW organizing committee.
SEAL INDIANA team members Dr. Karen Yoder, Jan Miller, and B.J. Hoge
ran the clinic with help from third-year dental student volunteers Tracy
Jenkins, Nahir Rosado, and Diana Teverbaugh, and IU medical student
Christian Rosado. "This excellent team of dental students screened 30
children," says Dr. Soto, noting that nearly half of the youngters had dental
caries. Patients also received fluoride treatments, sealants, oral hygiene
instruction, toothpaste and brushes, and information on dental services at IUSD.
"Participants were given a chance to learn more about the services and research
activities of the Oral Health Research Institute and the
Binational/Cross-Cultural Health Enhancement Center, which is one of the
projects of the IUPUI Signature Center Initiative involving dental school
researchers," says Dr. Soto. The center is further described at
http://www.iupui.edu/research/signaturecenters.html.
IN PRAISE OF SANG KWON. At this year's annual session of the American Student
Dental Association, held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., IU dental student Sang Kwon
('08) was named "Delegate of the Year" for ASDA's District 7,which covers not
only IU but also the dental schools of Marquette University and the universities
of Southern Illinois, Illinois at Chicago, Kentucky, and Louisville. "Sang has
done a great job keeping our chapter moving in the right direction," says
Poonan Shah ('09), who praises Sang for his success in overseeing the
chapter's fundraising program. "He's also made it a goal to ensure that everyone
who wants to be involved with our chapter is involved, and that as many
students as possible get the opportunity to participate in ASDA's national
meetings."
ADA NEWS SPOTLIGHTS IUSD GRADS. The Nov. 19 issue of the ADA News
includes features on two graduates of our school who are doing outstanding work
in community dentistry. William Tellman (DDS'85), Indianapolis, has
received the American Dental Association Foundation's 2007 E. Bud Tarrson Access
to Oral Health Care Award for his volunteer efforts treating homeless persons
and the working poor at the Gennesaret Free Clinic (a clinic where, as the story
mentions, IU's dental hygiene students also provide care through a
service-learning collaboration). In another feature, Jeffrey Dalin
(DDS'80), St. Louis, one of the founders of the national Give Kids a Smile,
describes a program called "Tiny Smiles" that volunteers from the Greater St.
Louis Dental Society have initiated with the goal of teaching parents how to
provide oral healthcare to their children from birth on. To read these stories,

REINDEER GAMES IN LaPORTE COUNTY. It's got a cute kid, an even cuter
storyline, and it's brimming with rural Midwestern charm (not to mention a lot
of Hoosier movie extras). If you've got little ones to entertain over the
holidays and need some DVD rental ideas, you might check out Prancer, a
1989 movie about a 9-year-old girl's unwavering devotion to a mysterious
reindeer that may, or may not, be one of Santa's. A tenderhearted classic that
still airs on TV every December, Prancer starred Rebecca Harrell, Sam
Elliott, and Cloris Leachman and was directed by Indiana's own
John Hancock, who shot parts of the movie on his family's apple orchard in
LaPorte County, near Rolling Prairie. Other filming locations included the
shopping mall in LaPorte, the Old Republic mansion in New Carlisle, Ind., and
the streets of Three Oaks, Mich. Hancock is best known as the director of 1973's
critically acclaimed Bang the Drum Slowly starring Robert De Niro.
You can check out a clip of Prancer at this New York Times
