Happy Holidays to All Students, Staff, and Faculty
May you spend the season
in the company of those you hold most dear.
1 (Thurs.)
IUSD FACULTY COUNCIL, noon in DS S117
PROPOSAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE for Student Research Subcommittee's Dec. 15th
meeting
It was 50 years ago today that Rosa Parks bravely refused to give up
her seat to a white passenger on a bus in racially segregated Montgomery, Ala.,
an incident that led first to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and eventually to the
emergence of the nation's civil rights movement. Just two days after Rosa Parks
died this fall, Indiana lost one of its own civil rights leaders: IU alumnus Dr.
Bernard Stuart, of Fort Wayne, who tragically died in a house fire. A
past president of the Fort Wayne chapter of the NAACP and former Fort Wayne
Community Schools board member, Dr. Stuart was cited by the Fort Wayne
Journal Gazette as a leader who "persisted in moving the community
conscience." He was a volunteer at the Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic. Many
of us were shocked and saddened by the news since only a month before his death
Dr. Stuart was in Indianapolis celebrating his 50-year reunion with other
members of the DDS Class of 1955 during the IUSD Alumni Association's Fall
Dental Alumni Conference. "He was a good person," says IUSD Community Dentistry
director Dr. Karen Yoder, a Fort Wayne resident. "He was a strong
supporter of the Matthew 25 Dental Clinic and actively participated in many
worthwhile endeavors."

LAST DAY OF FALL SEMESTER CLASSES for dental and graduate students
Deck the Halls (but don't rule out the ceilings, doors, desks, walls, and
cabinets). The final touches to your department or division's holiday dÈcor
must be in place this morning so that the judges can select the winner of the
2005 HOLIDAY DECORATION CONTEST. They'll be looking for creative use of
materials, dentally related themes, and artistry. We know from past contests
that many in our midst have the talent to produce eye-popping, jaw-dropping
displays that could stand up respectably against any department store window
dressing. The winner will be announced this afternoon. Good luck to all
contestants! (Please remove decorations before leaving for your holiday break.)
Dean Lawrence Goldblatt invites all students, staff, and faculty to
join him in the annual IUSD HOLIDAY PARTY, 3-5 p.m. in the school's lounge,
where "fun, food, and celebration" will abound. Today is the last day of fall
semester classes for most of our students and the rest have only one week to go,
so this party provides faculty and staff with an ideal occasion to wish students
well as they head into their final exams. Some special guests will be joining us
as usual, and the winner of this morning's decorating contest will be announced.
Come raise a glass of punch (or two) with your IUSD friends, colleagues, and
classmates as you look back on 2005 and make plans for the year ahead.

People, Places & Things
MORE SCHOLARSHIPS. Congratulations to two additional dental students who were
among the dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students receiving awards
at the annual Scholarship Luncheon in November. Fourth-year dental student
Lisa Young received the Pride-Hufford Scholarship, which is named for the
late Dr. James Pride, who headed the California-based Pride Institute;
and Brian Hufford, president of Hufford Financial Advisors, LLC,
Indianapolis. Third-year student Allison Bergdoll received the Howard
K. (DDS'26) and Shizuko Maesaka Award, which is named for the parents
of the late Ray Maesaka (DDS'60), who was a longtime IU professor of
prosthodontics.
MEDIA MOMENT. When the New York Times raised the topic of overuse of
tooth whiteners in its pages on Nov. 17, reporter Natasha Singer sought
the opinions of six dental practitioners and researchers in the nation,
including our own Dr. Bruce Matis, professor of operative dentistry and
director of Restorative Dentistry's Clinical Research Section. The article
described a growing number of consumers who have become obsessed with obtaining
ultra-ultra-white teeth â€" and who may be putting their oral health at risk as
chronic tooth bleachers who use too many products far too often, including a
vast array of over-the-counter whiteners. (One consumer interviewed for the
report admitted to routinely using a 22 percent carbamide peroxide bleaching
tray several times a week.) In the article Dr. Matis said he advises patients to
wait one to three years after completing a dentist-dispensed bleaching tray
regimen before undergoing the treatment again. He also cautioned against using
any "one size fits all" over-the-counter tray if it fits poorly because of the
possibility that bleaching agents could leak onto the gingival tissues and down
the throat.
Another researcher with ties to IU also contributed to the story: alumnus Dr.
Yiming Li, who served on the IUSD faculty for several years before
accepting an appointment at Loma Linda University in California, where he now
directs the Center for Dental Research.
IU WELL-REPRESENTED AT HDA CONFERENCE. The Hispanic Dental Association's
annual session, held in San Antonio in November, included a strong showing from
the Hoosier state. Contributors to the scientific program were Dr. Ana
Gossweiler, clinical assistant professor of periodontics, presenting a
workshop on communication strategies for the clinical care of Hispanic patients;
Dr. Michael Kowolik, professor of periodontics, participating in a
workshop that focused on clinical research collaborations in Latin America; and
Dr. Milagros Toro-Arrivillaga, a postdoctoral fellow at the Oral Health
Research Institute, presenting a poster pertaining to the research she is
conducting on microbial aspects of dental caries. Second-year dental student
William Ingram participated as the student representative of the HDA's
Indiana section. "Also, Dr. Aldo Sordelli, a grad perio alumnus,
presented a stimulating review of bone preservation strategies in periodontics
and implant dentistry," reports Dr. Kowolik. Dr. Sordelli earned his master's
degree in periodontics from IU in 1999 and is currently president of the Greater
Houston Hispanic Dental Association.
IUSD DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS BIG WINNERS AT IDHA SESSION. Shortly after the
close of the Indiana Dental Hygienists' Association's annual session last month,
Lorinda Coan, clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene, reported
with pride on the achievements of IUSD's second-year dental hygiene students
during the conference's statewide table clinic competition. Our students
competed with students from the IUPU Fort Wayne and IU South Bend campuses as
well as the University of Southern Indiana. "IUSD swept the awards by winning
five of the nine prizes," says Prof. Coan, who was also pleased by the students'
involvement in other parts of the conference. "They watched the process of the
organization at work by attending the reference committee and delegates meeting,
and they were involved in a lunch 'n' learn sponsored by Procter and Gamble and
presented by Gary Carpenter," she reports.
Congratulations to all of the IUSD table clinic winners and their faculty
