it does not depend on what we have, but on what we are. |

Best Wishes in the Holiday Season
to All Students, Staff, and Faculty
The Staff Council's RONALD McDONALD HOUSE HOLIDAY SEASON WISH LIST will run
through the middle of December this year -- please help if you can when the
Staff Council announces this project. The Ronald McDonald House serves as a home
away from home for families with children who are undergoing treatment at Riley
Hospital and other area hospitals. As they did last year, members of the IUSD
Staff Council plan to collect items to assist the families who will be staying
at the house with their youngsters over the holidays. Watch for more details
coming to you soon from the Staff Council.
Also, Claudette Maurer has put out the call for anyone wishing to
donate to the Dec. 2 GIFT BAG PROJECT to assist mothers and children who are
currently residing in the Coburn Place shelter here in the city. Claudette is
accepting items and cash donations in room DS220H. For more information, contact

People, Places & Things
DID HE WIN IT? YES, HE DID! We are pleased to follow up on a previous report
to inform you that Dr. Vanchit John, associate professor of periodontics,
came away from the recent American Academy of Periodontology annual meeting in
Orlando, Fla., as the winner of the Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship, a career
development award for academic periodontists. Dr. John had received word a few
months ago that he was one of three finalists in the country for the $30,000
fellowship, which was created by the late Bud Tarrson, owner of the John O.
Butler Company. Dr. John plans to use the three-year fellowship in part to
continue offering faculty in the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental
Programs a series of calibration workshops that strive for standardization in
the teaching of periodontics.
SEAL MOBILE ROLLS INTO LIVING ROOMS ACROSS AMERICA. The IU School of
Dentistry's SEAL INDIANA program figured prominently in a nationally aired,
hour-long PBS documentary about service learning in higher education.
Titled "Education for What? Learning Social Responsibility," the televised
documentary airing Nov. 7th
took an in-depth look at service learning activities at six urban campuses in
the U.S., including IUPUI.
While in Indianapolis about a year and a half ago, a television production
crew led by independent producer and San Jose (Calif.) State University
sociology professor Bob Gliner taped a diverse group of service-learning
projects and spoke to administrators, faculty, and students in IUPUI's School of
Public and Environmental Affairs, Center for Service and Learning, Geology
department, and the School of Dentistry. Dentistry was represented in the
documentary's interviews by Dean Lawrence Goldblatt; Dr. Karen
Yoder, director of Community Dentistry; and Reve Chaston (DDS'03),
who was serving on board the Seal Mobile as a fourth-year dental student at the
time. Elvia Reyes-Martinez, a dental assistant in the Department of Oral
Facial Development, also appeared on the program, as did former IU President
Thomas Ehrlich, who is the author of the book Civic Responsibility and
Higher Education and a national leader in efforts to broaden
service-learning opportunities for college students.
The documentary offered a fascinating view of several unique
community/university partnerships that are thriving thanks to efforts of
faculty, staff, and students at IUPUI, Portland (Ore.) and San Jose state
universities, and the universities of Wisconsin, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
In describing SEAL INDIANA to this national audience, Dr. Yoder talked about
how the program was helping the state strive toward the national health
objective of having dental sealants placed on the teeth of 50 percent of
children by 2010. SEAL INDIANA, she said, is fulfilling an unmet need in the
community and is providing student participants with experiences that will help
them better understand the needs within their own communities when they are
practitioners.
USING HIS SMARTS IN THE LAND OF THE "DUMMIES." Those bright yellow paperbacks
that line the shelves of bookstores -- as instantly recognizable these days as
bright yellow taxicabs -- are known for using non-technical language to
transport the curious into a layman's paradise, where readers can learn about
complicated subjects they know little or nothing about. Whether the topic is
hockey or horses or high blood pressure, rest assured there's a book in the
popular "For Dummies" series to cover it.
And the list of "For Dummies" topics just got a bit longer, thanks to our own
Ryan Williams, Technology Services' digital multimedia specialist, who
has written Windows XP Digital Music for Dummies. Released on Nov. 15,
the book is described on the Amazon Web site as a publication that "explains in
plain English how to evaluate online music services, download music, select a
portable player, turn a PC into an audio jukebox, burn custom CDs, and create
and edit music files from commercial CDs." Ryan also lets readers know what they
can download legally and for free.
Ryan is a 1996 graduate of DePauw University, where as a communications major
he was engaged in the Media Fellows program and other projects he credits for
helping shape his writing style. Ryan also gained experience through IU's
master's degree program in music technology, from which he graduated in 2003.
His book (in addition to some other cool facts, such as Ryan's having been named
Best Bassist in Indianapolis by Shotgunreviews.com) is featured in DePauw's
online November newsletter. Go to

AUTHORS PUBLISH 3RD
EDITION. Ryan Williams isn't the only member of the IUSD team who's been
busy putting pen to paper (rather, fingers to keyboard). Dr. Chris Miller,
executive associate dean, and Dr. Charles Palenik, administrative manager
of sponsored programs, have recently launched the 2005 edition of the reference
book, Infection Control and Management of Hazardous Materials for the Dental
Team. Published in its 3rd
edition by Elsevier-Mosby, the book was originally written in 1994 and was
revised for a 2nd
edition in 1998. Its target audience is the entire dental team, including dental
laboratory personnel. This book is one of the many reasons that others in the
field of dentistry throughout the country look to IUSD for expertise in matters
related to infection control. Dr. Miller is also associate dean for Academic
Affairs and Graduate Education. He holds joint appointments as a professor of
oral microbiology (School of Dentistry) and of microbiology and immunology
(School of Medicine).
INDY'S DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS BRING HOME LION'S SHARE OF AWARDS. Second-year
students in IU's Indianapolis-based Dental Hygiene program demonstrated their
prowess as table clinic presenters during the statewide competition at the
annual session of the Indiana Dental Hygienists' Association, held at the
Sheraton Hotel, Keystone Crossing, in November.
Four of Indiana's five Dental Hygiene programs competed, including students
from IU's Fort Wayne and South Bend campuses and the University of Southern
Indiana at Evansville. The roster of judges was composed of private practice
dental hygienists representing all state districts.
A total of 32 table clinics competed for 9 awards -- and our talented
students brought home all but 2!

LUNCHEON INTRODUCES 3 NEW DENTAL ASSISTING SCHOLARSHIPS. For the first time
in its six-year history, the annual IUSD Scholarship Luncheon featured a series
of new awards that have been created exclusively for students in IUSD's Dental
Assisting program.
The first Delta Dental Fund Scholarship in Dental Assisting was
awarded to Betheny Parson and Holly Robinson. This is the first
time that Delta Dental Fund, an affiliate of the Delta Dental Plan of Indiana,
has sponsored a dental assisting program scholarship in the states of Michigan,
Ohio, and Indiana. The scholarships are intended in part for in-state dental
assisting students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and
who uphold high professional and ethical standards.
Two other dental assisting scholarships have been established to support
students who are pursuing their certificates through the part-time program and
who are not funded from other sources. These scholarships also draw
much-deserved attention to two distinguished teachers who helped build Dental
Assisting into one of IU's top-notch programs.
Pauline Spencer, former director of IUSD's Dental Assisting program,
has generously donated the funds to create the Pauline Spencer Scholarship.
The first recipient is Judy Steel, who is in her second year as a
part-timer. Prof. Spencer retired in 2001 after directing IUSD's Dental
Assisting program with excellence for 20 years.
Gifts from IUSD's alumni have made the Sybil Niemann Scholarships
possible. They were awarded to Jane Brock and Adrienne Jessie,
both of whom are in year two of the part-time program. The scholarship is named
in honor of current IUSD faculty member Dr. Sybil Niemann, clinical
assistant professor of dental hygiene, who has provided outstanding service in a
variety of IUSD's teaching programs, including Dental Assisting, since joining
the faculty in 1980. She holds an IU degree in dentistry (1966) and an IU
certificate in oral pathology (1980).
The luncheon, held Nov. 19 at University Place Hotel, also included
presentation of the following scholarships:

WHEN MOVIES WERE MOVIES: DENTISTRY'S FAMOUS "BUN-BUSTER" TURNS 80. Silent
film director Eric von Stroheim's legendary epic about the role a winning
lottery ticket plays in the downfall of a dentist premiered in movie theaters in
December 1924 -- all 9 1/2 derriere-numbing hours of it. Titled "Greed," the
42-reel movie was based on Frank Norris' 1899 novel McTeague: A Story
of San Francisco. According to contemporary author James Wynbrandt,
this silent film classic was the first non-comedy, feature-length movie to be
made about dentistry. When it didn't fair well at the box office, "Greed" was
drastically shortened by 7 hours, undoubtedly aiding in the comfort of the
audience but nonetheless infuriating von Stroheim. "The man who cut my film had
nothing on his mind but a hat," he said. The deleted footage has been lost, but
in 1999, Turner Classic Movies commemorated the film's 75th
anniversary by using film stills to reconstruct a 239-minute version for
television.
