few minutes this afternoon to get together with your friends, colleagues, and
classmates to wish them the best for the holidays and a new year filled with
good health and fortune. Come down to the lounge to partake of some scrumptious
food. Come for the wonderful company -- you can introduce yourself to, or get
reacquainted with, some of the school's special guests, or just take a moment to
let your regular IUSD pals and cohorts know how much you appreciate their
friendship and support. Come for the opportunity to wish our students good luck
with their exams, especially those who are maneuvering through assessment and
finals week for the first time and could benefit from a few words of
encouragement. Come for the chance to ask students in their final year of
studies what their plans are at the end of the school year. What better place to
fill your heart with gladness -- and your plate with cookies? Come one, come all

Last day to contribute items (by noon, please) to the Staff Council's HOLIDAY
PROJECT 2003, which is coordinated by Nicole Guerrettaz of the Department
of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology; and Nadine Florek of
Technology Services. This year, the council has turned its focus to the Ronald
McDonald House, where children who are undergoing treatment at Riley Hospital
and other area hospitals stay with their families. (The Ronald McDonald House
can accommodate up to 60 families at one time.) Items are being collected to
assist the families who will be staying at the house with their youngsters over
the holidays. All contributed items must be new, and must be labeled (content,
size, etc.) if they have been gift-wrapped. Everything from blankets to bibs to
booties are needed for infants and newborns, and gifts such as phone cards,
disposable cameras, stationery, and food baskets would be of great assistance to
the families while they are away from their homes. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and
other oral care products are also needed. For a full list of items needed and to
learn where you can make a donation, watch for details coming soon from Nikki
and Nadine. The Staff Council will deliver the gifts to the Ronald McDonald
House tomorrow.

SCHOLARSHIP. Congratulations to third-year dental student Aaron Strickland,
who has received a scholarship from the Southeastern District Dental Society.
The Southeastern Society Dental Education Scholarship is given in part for
academic excellence, and is intended for residents or former residents of a
nine-county area in the southeastern part of Indiana. Aaron is from North
Vernon. He is the second annual recipient of the scholarship, which was
established in 2002.
DR. ANDRES RECEIVES ACADEMY'S HIGHEST HONOR. Describing him as a "self-made
man" and a "distinguished lecturer" who has "served his profession in many
capacities," the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics (AAMP) has
bestowed upon Dr. Carl Andres the Andrew J. Ackerman Award, which
represents the highest degree of recognition for lifetime achievement that a
member of the academy can receive.
Named in memory of a leader in the field of maxillofacial prosthetics, the
award was presented to Dr. Andres at the annual scientific session in
Scottsdale, Ariz., in November. He is the 26th recipient in an awards
program that dates back 44 years.
A longtime professor of prosthodontics and director of graduate
prosthodontics at IU, Dr. Andres is a past president of the AAMP and a diplomate
of the American Board of Prosthodontics. He holds fellowship in the American
College of Dentists, American College of Prosthodontists, American Academy of
Fixed Prosthodontics, and Academy of Prosthodontics. For the latter, he has
devoted much of his time over the years as a participant of the
academy-sponsored outreach projects that serve communities in need, such as
caring for the dental needs of diabetic Native Americans on the Blackfeet
Reservation in Montana.
Dr. Andres was cited by the AAMP for a lifetime body of work that has
included service to his country as a Colonel in the United States Air Force and
his outstanding efforts as an educator, author, editor, invited lecturer,
specialty board examiner, and organizational leader. He is a former director of
the USAF maxillofacial prosthetics residency program at Wilford Hall Medical
Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
