Recognition Month for IUSD's
Support Services Staff
If you're new to the IUSD faculty, staff, or student body, consider
subscribing to the IUPUI campus's free electronic newsletter, JagNews.
This publication will keep you posted on just about every organized activity on
campus, including special guest lectures, open houses, art shows, club projects,
and plenty of opportunities to volunteer. You can take advantage of bookstore
clearances and IUPUI's surplus auctions. Many campus researchers also seek study
participants from the JagNews readership. To subscribe, go to

They Did It Their Way, In Good Ol' Indy. The world reluctantly said
goodbye to Elvis Presley on this day in 1977. A few weeks earlier, on
June 26, Elvis rocked and rolled his way through what turned out to be the final
concert of his life. The concert site was Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.
The Hoosier capital also played a pivotal role in the career of another
legendary set of pipes: Frank Sinatra made his singing debut as a solo
artist at the Lyric Theater in Indianapolis on Feb. 2, 1940. He premiered with
the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

your IUSD friends, colleagues, and classmates before fall semester picks up
speed (and, this year, before we find the re-accreditation site visitors on our
doorstep). Undergraduate and predoctoral clinics and classes are cancelled this
afternoon; cancellation of graduate clinics and classes is at the discretion of
program directors.

People, Places, and Things
INVITED SPEAKER, PANELIST. Dr. Michael Kowolik , professor of
periodontics, was one of four internationally invited speakers at a recent
conference marking the 30th anniversary of the postgraduate program in
periodontics at the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico. Dr.
Kowolik's theme was associations between oral infection/inflammation and
cardiovascular disease risk. In June, Dr. Dominique Galli , associate
professor of oral biology, spent two days in Montreal by invitation of the
Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to serve as a member of the Space Science
Enhancement Program Scientific Review Panel for Space Life Sciences. She was one
of seven reviewers representing Belgium, Canada, and the U.S. Dr. Galli served
on a similar review panel for the CSA in Ottawa in 2003.
NIH GRANT FOR DR. GALLI. Dr. Dominique Galli has also been busy
pursuing projects of a more down-to-earth nature. With a newly awarded grant
from the National Institutes of Health, she has launched a study with the goal
of providing a better understanding of how antibiotic resistance is spread among
bacteria in the mouth.
Titled "Tracking DNA Transfer in Oral Biofilms," the grant is budgeted for
$378,750 through June 2008. It was awarded by the NIH's National Institute of
Dental & Craniofacial Research.
The sticky, bacteria-laden material we commonly refer to as dental plaque is
known in the research community as oral biofilm. Researchers know that bacterial
species, including those that thrive in the mouth, are growing increasingly more
resistant to antibiotic therapies, a problem further complicated by the fact
that genes that are resistant to antibiotics are often capable of moving from
one bacterial species to the next.
Dr. Galli will be looking specifically at conjugative gene transfer, which is
the transfer of mobile elements by direct cell-to-cell contact. It is thought to
be the most effective way the resistance genes travel from species to species.
Current methods of detecting this type of gene transfer have several drawbacks,
so Dr. Galli's objective is to design a genetic tool that will allow for the
non-intrusive (in situ) visual tracking of mobile genetic elements in biofilms
that contain several types of bacteria.
A more precise genetic tool could help provide researchers with greater
knowledge of the role cell-to-cell transfer plays in antibiotic resistance, and
this information could in turn potentially aid in developing strategies to break
the resistance cycle.
Dr. Galli's postdoctoral student, Dr. Anna Gustavsson , will conduct
some of the bench work for the NIH study, and a full-time technician will also
be hired.
