People, Places, and Things

IU PROF EARNS INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION'S HIGHEST HONOR. Congratulations to Dr. Chris Miller, the School of Dentistry's executive associate dean and associate dean for academic affairs and graduate education, who received the James J. Crawford Award at the annual meeting of the Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) held in Tucson, Ariz., in June. Named for the founder of OSAP (and for the man many consider the "Father of Infection Control in Dentistry"), the award is the most prestigious given by the organization. It honors Dr. Miller for his lifetime achievement in infection control in dentistry. A past chair of OSAP, Dr. Miller helped establish the organization in 1984. He has long been considered a national authority on matters related to infection control. He serves as a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and has belonged to the Working Group for the CDC's Draft of Recommended Infection Control Practices for Dentistry, 2003, which is slated for approval this fall. For the past year, Dr. Miller has been writing a column for the publication Dental Products Report titled "Infection Control Report." On the home front, among his many other duties Dr. Miller directs IUSD's Infection Control Research and Services division.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD. Yet another member of the IUSD team enjoyed a high profile at the OSAP meeting in Tucson. Dr. Charles Palenik, administrative manager of sponsored programs, was elected to a one-year term as chair of OSAP's board of directors. As part of his duties as vice-chair last year, he served as a co-chair of the Tucson meeting. Dr. Palenik is assistant director of IUSD's Infection Control Research and Services division.

HATS OFF TO KAY ROSSOK. For the past few weeks, Kay Rossok has been enjoying her well-deserved three-month tenure as the latest recipient of the Staff Council's Staff Excellence award. A senior administrative secretary for the Dental Assisting division of the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, Kay has a long history with IU. She spent 16 years in private practice after graduating from the dental hygiene program on the Fort Wayne campus in 1979. She also served as a dental hygienist for the Oral Health Research Institute's research studies on the Bloomington campus in 1985 and periodically filled in for OHRI's dental hygienists on the Indianapolis campus from 1992 until 1995, when she joined the IUSD staff full time. Her current position was preceded by a job in the Dean's Office and, before that, in the library.

Kay's positive outlook and her spirit of volunteerism, particularly her tireless efforts on behalf of the Staff Council, have won her a place among the Staff Excellence award recipients. "She recently jumped at the opportunity to put together a bulletin board to honor IUSD family troops during the war," says a nominator. "She has also given her all to help make the past few staff conferences better and better, and she does an excellent job of pulling in additional volunteers to support the conference."

Described as an employee who has a smile in her voice as well as on her face, Kay is cited for her "unfailingly positive" approach to her work. She has cheerfully forfeited many lunch hours to type minutes from council meetings and to work on the staff bulletin board. "She certainly gives her best to the Staff Council," says a nominator.

PERU IN THE PAGES OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. A circus in small-town Peru, Ind., found its way into the pages of the July issue of National Geographic, thanks to the talented son of IUSD faculty member Dr. Karen Yoder, director of community dentistry. Dave Yoder, a photojournalist living in Milan, Italy, returned to his Hoosier roots last summer to accept an assignment from the magazine to photograph the children of Peru, who annually put on an amateur, but amazingly sophisticated three-ring circus involving just about everyone in town. Some of the kids have become so skilled as trapeze artists, high-wire walkers, and somersaulters that they've been invited to perform at venues as far away as Monaco, and a few have gone on to join professional circuses as adults. Dave Yoder's gentle, imaginative photos bring the circus and its young performers to life for all to see in one of the world's most highly regarded magazines. Formerly a staff photographer at the Orange County (Calif.) Register newspaper, Dave has assembled a diverse portfolio that includes photos of movie stars such as Antonio Banderas and that legendary odd couple â€" Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau â€" as well as photo essays on such topics as bounty hunters. An image he captured in 1999 in the aftermath of an earthquake in California was selected by the Associated Press as one of the AP's "Photos of the Century."

OLD ENOUGH FOR A GOLD WATCH. Congratulations to the IU School of Dentistry's Alumni Bulletin, which turns 65 this month.
