PAN AM-ORAMA. Fifteen years ago today, the 10th PAN AMERICAN GAMES got under way at sites throughout Marion County and elsewhere in the state, with much of the action during the 3-week Games taking place virtually in the dental school's backyard. A total of 4,453 athletes from 38 countries flooded Indy and our campus. Events for 9 of the 30 sports were featured at the Natatorium, the Track and Field Stadium directly behind our school, and most of the other sports facilities on campus. Our dental school served as perfect background "scenery" on TV screens during the nationally televised attempt of Olympic track and field star Carl Lewis to break the long jump world record held by his equally famous predecessor, Bob Beamon. Carl landed short by 6 inches, but, at 28 feet, 8.5 inches, he set a new Pan Am record.

IUSD grad Dr. Ricardo Kriebel-Coronado (MSD'81 Prosthodontics), a native of Costa Rica and former top-seeded tennis player there, returned to Indy to coach his country's tennis team. Costa Rica's Pam Am history was dismal--it held one meager silver medal in soccer from the 1950s. The delegation hoped at best that Silvia Poll, Costa Rica's most talented swimmer (and future Olympic medalist), might bring home an honor. But Indy's 1987 Pan Am Games were rich with magical moments for this Central American nation. Silvia pulled in a dazzling 8 medals--3 of them gold--and Costa Rica won a dozen altogether, including a bronze in the men's doubles for Dr. Kriebel's team.

Many dental school employees volunteered their services along with about 38,000 other Hoosiers, including faculty and staff who helped run a dental clinic for athletes at the Pan American Village, which was set up on the grounds of Fort Benjamin Harrison. A total of 187 dental patients from 31 countries were either treated or fitted with mouth guards--174 at the village, 11 at the dental school, and 2 in private practice.

With all those sprinting feet, flailing arms, and somersaulting bodies--and with a wild assortment of balls and other objects being pitched, kicked, whacked, parried, and hurled about--you'd expect that dentally injured athletes would have reported to the treatment center in droves. But only one significant injury was reported during the entire month--and it wasn't even suffered by an athlete. Ironically, it was our own faculty member Dr. Larry Ryan--then serving as chair, by the way, of the Pan American Games' Dental Care Committee--who required attention after fracturing his cheekbone in a softball game on the day of the opening ceremonies.

SOUND MEDICINE. Farming on Mars, a history of robbing graves for medical education, and a how-to on fashioning artificial ears. Topics on the June 29th edition of "Sound Medicine," a radio program on WFYI Public Radio sponsored by the IU School of Medicine, were as fascinating as they were diverse. IUSD faculty member Dr. Carl Andres had his share of interesting information to impart as one of the 3 experts interviewed for this weekly program, which features topics in medicine every Saturday at noon.

Mars? Graves? Ears? Our newest students might be wondering which of those 3 topics a dentist would be asked to talk about. It might come as a surprise to them that dentists trained in maxillofacial prosthetics, as Dr. Andres is, work not only with artificial teeth but also with fabricating eyes, noses, ears, and other parts of the face for patients who have lost anatomic features to cancer, accidents, or other traumas.

Producers of "Sound Medicine" invited Dr. Andres, director of the graduate prosthodontics program, to describe stereolithography and rapid prototyping, an industrial process now being used to create lifelike 3-dimensional prostheses characterized by their intricate detail. An advantage of stereolithography over conventional facial reconstruction techniques is its ability to do the job with extraordinary speed.

You can read a summary of the technique on the "Sound Medicine" Website (http://soundmedicine.iu.edu/archive/2002/062902.html). For a more in-depth description and photo go to this Wilford Hall Medical Center site: http://www.whmc.af.mil/dental/Flights/Lab/Ear.htm. You can also contact Susan Crum (274-8135) if you'd like to borrow her tape of Dr. Andre's radio interview.
