He is being recognized in part for establishing the Russell Winfield Lehman, DDS Scholarship, which honors the memory of Steve’s father, a 1927 dental graduate of IU who practiced in Terre Haute, Ind., for nearly 30 years. First awarded in 2003, the legacy scholarship is given to students who have chosen to pursue prosthodontic studies at IU and who plan to practice the specialty in Indiana. More recently, Lehman made a planned gift to the IU dental school to establish an endowed chair in prosthodontics. People, Places, and Things

DDS CLASS OF 2007 DRAINS ITS BANK ACCOUNT TO BENEFIT INTERNATIONAL SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAM. Just days after IUSD’s students and faculty returned to the school from their 2008 spring-break trips to Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico, the school’s International Service-Learning program received a big boost from the DDS Class of 2007 to help with future trips abroad. Indianapolis dentist Dr. Robert Gausmann, who served as class treasurer during his dental student days, presented a check to the school for about $1,400, with a request from the class officers that the funds be used to purchase equipment for the International Service-Learning program.

The gift represented the amount of money that remained after the class had finished paying all its bills. Dr. Timothy Carlson, head of the service-learning group that annually provides oral healthcare to persons in need in Ecuador, accepted the check. "I was pleased to accept the donation on behalf of the school, and assured Rob that the equipment was very much needed," he said.

The funds will nearly cover the cost of an Adec portable dental unit that will be obtained from Rota-Dent, a non-profit world community service program established by the Rotary Clubs of Newberg, Ore., and Salzburg, Austria. Rota-Dent provides portable low-cost dental equipment to qualified requesting organizations for use in providing dental care to underserved populations throughout the world.

AN AAP TEACHING AWARD FOR DR. KIM. Dr. Seok-Jin Kim, Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, received an award in March from the American Academy of Periodontology for "Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics." Kim is a clinical assistant professor of periodontics.

The award, which annually goes to one teacher at each of the dental institutions in the U.S. and Canada, is given to educators who "demonstrate a commitment to excellence in providing education in the full scope of clinical periodontics and relay that enthusiasm to students."

"Dr. Kim has been instrumental in organizing our new course on Implant Dentistry and revamping our Recent Advances Literature Seminar, both for our residents," Dr. Vanchit John, interim chair of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, said in announcing the award. John also noted that Kim has provided outstanding clinical coverage in both the predoctoral and graduate clinics, served as a PBL tutor, and lectured in the pre-doctoral program.

STAFF COUNCIL OFFICERS. Congratulations to the following staff members, who were recently elected as the IUSD Staff Council officers for 2008: President – Pamela Clark, of Student Affairs; Vice-President – Vickie Mattox, of Cash Operations; Secretaries – Kristin Hinton, of the Comprehensive Care Clinics, and Kay Rossok, of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs; and Treasurers – Jill Allen, of Faculty Private Practice, and Ginger Rice, of Academic Affairs.

YOU CAN HELP MAKE GREAT STRIDES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CYSTIC FIBROSIS. For the second consecutive year, Vickie Newkirk in Student Affairs is heading up an effort at IUSD to collect donations and draw dental school participants to the Cystic Fibrosis "Great Strides Walk." The Indiana Chapter’s walk begins at 9 a.m. in Military Park on May 17, and if you donate at least $5 to the cause, you can wear blue jeans to work on Friday, May 9. "The IUSD Pre-Dental Club has formed a sister team, and the enthusiasm of these young students is amazing," says Newkirk. "They are recruiting and raising funds all over campus!" If you would like to make a donation, join the IUSD team of walkers (known as Brayden’s Rangers), or form a team of your own, please contact Newkirk (DS105; 274-5459; vnewkirk@iupui.edu). wanted signPLUMBING THE DEPPS OF DILLINGER. A crowd of some 1,000 fans were on hand in Crown Point, Ind., last week to get a glimpse of Johnny Depp as he taped scenes for his newest movie role as the infamous 1930s Hoosier gangster John Dillinger in the film "Public Enemies." (The other Bad Boys referred to in the title are Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd.) The movie will recreate Dillinger’s real-life escape in 1934 from Crown Point’s old Lake County jail, which was spruced up for the shoot. The movie is scheduled to be released in 2009. Judging from the YouTube postings of Depp’s visit to Crown Point, Depp’s status as an international superstar is due to his enormous talent, not ego. A zealous Crown Point crowd had waited long hours to see Depp, and the soft-spoken actor paid them back by taking some extra time to visit with fans, graciously responding to their comments, posing for photos, and doing his best to shake every hand that was thrust at him.

Dillinger was raised in Indianapolis and then Mooresville before embracing a life of crime and rising to his eventual status as Public Enemy No. 1. Although he made a clean escape (in the sheriff’s new car) from the Lake County jail, where he was awaiting murder charges, federal agents caught up with him a few months later in Chicago and filled him full of bullet holes. Dillinger is buried in section 44, lot 94, in Indy’s Crown Hill Cemetery. You can read more about Dillinger (who isn’t nearly as good looking, by the way, as the man who will portray him) at http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_story/835:451/1/John_Dillinger.htm.

CHEW ON THIS. Citing statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Mediamark Research, consumer magazine Men’s Health recently ranked 100 U.S. cities for their degree of dental perfection. Rankings were based on such details as number of people who have annual dental check-ups and number of households with fluoridated tap water. Madison, Wis., topped the list in the overall "Best Teeth" category, and Lubbock, Texas, wound up with the rock-bottom designation as the city with the "Worst Teeth." At #39, Indianapolis earned a grade of B-. We ranked higher than Ft. Wayne (#44, the only other Hoosier city mentioned) as well as Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Louisville, but lower than the Buckeye towns of Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo. The report appeared in the magazine’s April ’08 issue.
