This evening, Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, Inc., honors Indiana University
School of Dentistry and the Physical Therapy Department of the School of Health
and Rehabilitation Sciences as GOODWILL'S PARTNER OF THE YEAR, 7 p.m. at the Indiana
Roof Ballroom. By invitation. During Goodwill's "Little Black Dress Ball" (the ball's
title is a nod to the organization's well-known media campaign), the two schools
will be recognized for their efforts in "helping people strive toward self-sufficiency"
through service-learning programs.
"Goodwill has maintained a partnership with IUPUI Service Learning for the past
four years to bring health-related services to Commercial Services employees and
others at Goodwill," says Yolanda White , Goodwill's marketing manager. "The
dental school has assisted nearly 50 individuals, and Goodwill has worked with an
average of 10 to 15 students per school year." The program is a collaborative effort
with Indiana Donated Dental Services.
The dental school's fourth-year dental students enroll in a Community Oral Health
elective to provide treatment for adults who are developmentally disabled and employed
in Goodwill's workshops, says Dr. Karen Yoder , director of Community Dentistry.
"The students also participate in monthly discussions with our community partner
mentors from Goodwill Industries, who help the students more thoroughly understand
the population for whom they are providing services."
During the banquet, the School of Dentistry will be represented in a video that
was taped last month by WTHR-TV, a sponsor of the event. The tape includes interviews
with Dean Lawrence Goldblatt and Dr. Nassim Olabi , an IU general practice
resident who participated in the school's Goodwill program during his fourth year
of dental school last year.
Being chosen by Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana for Partner of the Year recognition
is an enormous honor for our school. Congratulations to all students and faculty
who have contributed over the years to the oral health of Goodwill's employees and
associates. An Indiana Donated Dental Services' Goodwill Industries Volunteer Awards
program was established in 2004 with funds from the West Foundation. The awards
are presented during the school's annual graduation luncheon.

Science and Craniofacial Biology at New York University College of Dentistry. She
holds a dental degree, master's degree in mechanical engineering, orthodontic certificate,
and PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA degree
from the College of St. Thomas.
Dr. Rekow's many interests include advancing the role of dentists as "frontliners"
in civil defense. She was the subject of an article last summer in the New
York Times
(http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/02/health/02dent.html?ex=1280635200&en=70fecfef38ea263c&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss).

honoree, former full-time faculty member Charles Nelson (DDS'76), of Avon,
Ind., is being recognized for his vision and efforts in the successful implementation
of the Hutton Circle, a major fund-raising initiative honoring Charles Hutton
(DDS'52), former longtime chair of the Department of Oral Surgery (now Oral Surgery
and Hospital Dentistry), and benefiting the Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry
program. Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Nelson, more than $100,000 in gifts from
alumni and friends were contributed to the Hutton Circle in its first year. Dr.
Nelson is also a graduate of IU's oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. He served
as chair of the oral surgery department for several years after Dr. Hutton retired.

SIMON SAYS: SURPRISE, LARRY! When Dean Lawrence Goldblatt attended a campus
luncheon on March 23, he thought he was there to participate in a surprise celebration
that Chancellor Charles Bantz had arranged in honor of a mutual colleague.
But Dr. Goldblatt soon found that he was the subject of a well-planned switcheroo:
Our dean was himself the "man of the hour."
With help from Chancellor Bantz, who hosted the gathering of Dr. Goldblatt's fellow
deans, the Simon Youth Foundation (SYF) recognized Dr. Goldblatt for his "selfless
devotion" to the foundation by presenting him with a Volunteer Award of Excellence.
He received the award for this work in support of at-risk and economically disadvantaged
youth across the country.
The Simon Youth Foundation fosters educational opportunities and career development
for at-risk youth through its Education Resource Centers (ERC), which enable students
to complete high school, and through a scholarship program that helps graduates
to pursue additional education opportunities.
In conjunction with Jim Pipino , Youngstown, Ohio, who received his award
earlier in the month, Dr. Goldblatt was instrumental in the formation and implementation
of an initiative called the Committee of 200, which raised $202,000 in just 18 months
for SYF and its network of 21 alternative high schools in 11 states. The fund supports
capital needs and scholarships for each location.
In his nomination letter, Dr. Richard Markoff , SYF executive director, said:
"Dr. Goldblatt is a highly successful and incredibly busy professional and community
leader. And yet, his dedication to at-risk youth has made a definite impact on the
lives of numerous ERC students, today and for many years to come."
THE CABLE CONNECTION. If you've done any strolling on Michigan Street on the far
eastside of campus lately, you've probably noticed that the Mary E. Cable
building has been torn down. Originally an Indianapolis Public Schools' building
and later on a facility used by IUPUI until 2005, the school was named for a prominent
Indianapolis educator from the first half of the 20th century and the first president
of the Indianapolis chapter of the NAACP.
Mrs. Cable was a highly accomplished woman, but until recently we didn't know that
she was also the mother of an Indiana Dental College graduate â€" and a famous one
at that! Thanks to some extensive research undertaken by sports historian Dan O'Brien ,
a former sportscaster for WTHR-TV, we now know that Theodore Cable , a 1919
graduate of the IDC (IUSD's predecessor), enrolled in our school after achieving
recognition as one of the leading hammer throwers in the world. During his undergraduate
studies at Harvard University, he won the 1912 national intercollegiate championship
in the hammer throw, the first African American to do so. He won again in 1913.
In a book he wrote in the 1980s about African American athletes, tennis legend Arthur
Ashe referred to Dr. Cable as "black America's first star in field events."
Ted Cable also excelled as a long jumper before he pursued a distinguished and civic-minded
career in dentistry, first in Indianapolis and then in New York City. His humanitarian
efforts included the creation of an Indianapolis dental clinic, named for his mother,
that he operated free of charge for children in need; and an award, named for his
father, George Cable , that was presented annually to African American citizens
who demonstrated exemplary volunteerism in the community.
Dr. Cable will be featured in the next issue of the IUSD Alumni Bulletin,
to be published in April. (Extra copies will be available in the basement hall outside
the cafeteria.) We are grateful to author Dan O'Brien for sharing this story with
the school, and we also extend a special note of thanks to Dr. Michael Baumgartner ,
clinical assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, for alerting us to Dan's biographical
work on Dr. Cable.
STAFF EXCELLENCE. Congratulations to Fran Haywood , the newest recipient of
the IUSD Staff Council's Staff Excellence Award. Fran is a senior administrative
secretary for the Comprehensive Care Clinics, and an employee of IUSD since 2001.
Her award is the result of nominations from a large group of co-workers who hold
Fran in high regard as a critically important team player in Comp Care. "Fran immediately
immersed herself in her job as soon as she was hired," says a nominator. "She always
volunteers to help co-workers with extra projects."
Fran fulfills an enormous role in her division, including the responsibility of
ensuring there is adequate faculty coverage in each of the school's seven Comp Care
clinics every weekday â€" a total of 28 positions. "She does this flawlessly, and
with the highest degree of professionalism and cordiality," says a nominator.
She also expertly keeps track of all the laboratory cases that are submitted by
the Comp Care directors. "With her wonderful organizational skills, she accepted
the difficult task of revamping the manner in which out-sourced lab invoices were
processed," says another nominator.
Fran's first-rate skills as a troubleshooter have not escaped the notice of her
co-workers, either. "Fran anticipates potential schedule problems weeks in advance,
and notifies the appropriate faculty so that we can correct or alleviate these situations,"
an administrator says. "When problems do arise at the last minute, Fran will frequently
have already developed potential solutions."
Fran is one of the hardest workers we have here at IUSD," says another colleague.
"I can't think of anyone more deserving."
AN OFFER THEY COULDN'T REFUSE? THE SOPRANOS SHOOT IT UP (WITH CAMERAS) AT NYU DENTAL
COLLEGE. New York University College of Dentistry recently found a new use for its
preclinical simulation lab: Loaning it out as background scenery for HBO's popular
series, "The Sopranos."
In the show, the series' star, gangster Tony Soprano, has a daughter, Meadow, whose
boyfriend, Finn, is a dental student. When the producers needed to film a dental
school scene for an episode that aired in March, they turned to NYU for assistance.
About a dozen real-life NYU dental students playing extras helped lend a realistic
touch to Finn's educational environment. To read and see more, go to
