Recognition Month for IUSD's
Secretaries

Have you completed the federally mandated HIPAA SECURITY TRAINING yet? If not, you've got just 20 more days to do so. The training will acquaint you with the new HIPAA Security Rule, a series of procedures established to ensure confidentiality of electronic protected health information. The Rule goes into effect on April 21, so ALL IUSD students, staff, and faculty (in every category, including volunteers) must complete the online training by Wed., April 20. (Noncompliance could result in significant penalties for this institution and the university.) The training should take about an hour, and can be done at your workstation, at home, or in the library's computer lab, the latter of which has been reserved exclusively for this training on 10 dates in April, as listed below. To get started, log on to the Intraner. From the Internet Survey Wizard, choose "HIPAA IT Security Privacy Policies and Procedures." Your successful completion of the training will be electronically registered for documentation purposes. For more information, contact Dr. Chris H. Miller , executive associate dean and HIPAA Security Officer.

IUPUI SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY luncheon, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. By invitation. The program annually recognizes a select group of individuals, companies, and organizations that have made substantial contributions to IUPUI through gifts and voluntary service.

The School of Dentistry's honored guest in 2005 is Mrs. Martha Pauline Barney , who has made a major impact on the renovation of the dental school's preclinical laboratory with a gift given in honor of her father, the late Dr. Charles Priest . A 1904 Indiana Dental College graduate, Dr. Priest was a practitioner in Marion, Ind., who devoted much of his life to the self-study of restorative dentistry. He was particularly interested in helping advance knowledge in the area of immediate dentures, which was a new technique in dentistry at the turn of the century. He invented an anatomical denture grinder that was sold in Europe, South America, and India as well as in the U.S. Described by the Indiana Dental Association in the 1940s as one of its "best known and loved members," Dr. Priest presided over the state organization in 1924.

Mrs. Barney has donated funds to name the instructor's station in SB05 in memory of her father, and also to sponsor one of the lab's simulator units.

People, Places, and Things

A PRESIDENT'S GAVEL IN ONE HAND, A DIPLOMATE'S CERTIFICATE IN THE OTHER. Dr. James Hartsfield Jr ., professor of oral facial genetics, orthodontics, and medical and molecular genetics, has taken the helm of one organization and received some very good news from another. In March, he accepted the presidency of the Craniofacial Biology Group of the International Association for Dental Research, a post he will hold for a year. In preparation for the presidency, he chaired the Craniofacial Biology section of the 2005 IADR/AADR meeting in Baltimore, Md. Now in the top position, he will preside over the group's 2006 AADR meeting in Orlando, Fla., and the 2006 IADR meeting in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Hartsfield has also been notified by the American Board of Orthodontics that he has successfully completed all of the requirements necessary for board certification in the specialty. He is now a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, which represents the second time he has earned such status. Dr. Hartsfield has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics since 1990. At IU, he holds joint faculty appointments at the dental and medical schools.

STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED. The Oral Health Research Institute is recruiting persons ages 18 to 30 to be in a dental study that will look at the possible relationship between dental plaque and heart disease in African Americans and Caucasians. Participants will be paid to attend a screening visit to determine if they qualify for the study. Qualified subjects will participate in a three-phase study over 11 weeks that will require a weekly visit for blood draw and dental exams. Since the study involves a "no brushing" period, subjects will be compensated well for their participation. The benefits and risks of the study will be explained at the screening visit. Call 274-8822 and ask for the person screening for the plaque/heart disease study.

NIDCR GRANT AWARDED TO DR. MARTINEZ-MIER. Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier , assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry, has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for a project titled "Development of Objective Methods for Fluorosis Diagnosis." The first year of the study is funded for $151,500, with provisional funding of $227,250 to cover the project for an additional year.

Methods currently used to diagnose dental fluorosis rely on subjective measurements based on epidemiological indices. This has resulted in a lack of diagnostic sensitivity and specificity and has led to inconsistencies in the summarization of data. Dr. Martinez-Mier's proposal aims at developing objective and quantitative methods for fluorosis diagnosis using two types of imaging technology (Quantitative Light Fluorescence [QLF] and digital intraoral photography) as well as visual examination. The study will consist of both in vitro and clinical phases, with children ages 7 to 13 participating in the clinical portion.

Dr. Martinez-Mier and her research team will use image analysis software to develop a method to quantify photographic images. They will also develop a method to quantify fluoride-related hypomineralization using microcomputed tomography (Micro-CT) imaging, a radiographic technique that provides much greater detail of an image than a traditional CT scan.

The goal of the study is to provide a methodological framework that can help resolve the discrepancies that currently make it difficult to compare results of studies dealing with epidemiology and the biological and esthetic effects of dental fluorosis.

NEW FACULTY MEMBER IS NATIONAL ORTHODONTIC GROUP'S TOP FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENT. Former graduate student Dr. Riyad Al-Qawasmi , who accepted a full-time appointment on the IUSD faculty only a few months ago, is off to an excellent start in academic circles. He was recently selected by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation to receive the organization's Willie and Earl Shepard Fellowship, the top award of 12 Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowships that are being given in 2005. Dr. Al-Qawasmi is an assistant professor of orthodontics and oral facial genetics.

The awards program was created by the AAOF to recognize individuals who are preparing for, or beginning careers in, orthodontic education. The Shepard fellowship, which is presented to the applicant having the most outstanding faculty development proposal, carries a $15,000 award. Dr. Al-Qawasmi will use the funds to further his research on a proposal he submitted to the AAOF titled "Genetic Determinants of Root Resorption Susceptibility."

DR. STOOKEY RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL AWARD. Congratulations to Dr. George Stookey , distinguished professor emeritus of preventive and community dentistry, who received the IADR's E.W. Borrow Memorial Award during the association's annual session in Baltimore, Md., in March. The Borrow award is given to recognize and stimulate research in oral health promotion for children, with a priority for caries prevention research that uses fluoride in different formats. Dr. Stookey is currently hard at work preparing for his responsibilities as host of the 52nd Congress of the European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA), to be held July 6-9 at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown hotel. ORCA is composed of the world's leading scientists in the field of dental caries, and will draw about 350-400 participants. It is an enormous honor for Indianapolis to be chosen as a host city for this congress, which has met outside Europe only one other time in ORCA's history. IUSD and its Oral Health Research Institute are also serving as event hosts.

NEW KUDOS FOR AN OLD MOVIE. Last month, the 1986 movie classic "Hoosiers" momentarily slipped back into both the global and local spotlights - this time, as a special DVD re-release and as the subject of a special screening at the Indianapolis Spirit & Place Spring Festival, which also featured "Hoosiers" author Angelo Pizzo . This tale of a hard-luck rural Indiana high school basketball team's triumphant journey to the state finals starred four people whose work is familiar to many of us here at the IU dental school: actors Gene Hackman , Dennis Hopper , and Barbara Hershey - and a fellow by the name of Steve Hollar , who was unknown to us back then but would eventually show up on IUSD's doorstep to enroll in dental school. Three years before his arrival at IUSD, Steve, who is a high school basketball legend in his hometown of Warsaw, Ind., beat out about 8,000 other men who auditioned for coveted roles as members of the fictional basketball team, the Hickory Huskers. Today, Dr. Hollar, a member of the DDS Class of 1993, practices in Warsaw. According to the Indianapolis Star, "Hoosiers" was voted the No. 1 sports movie by USA Today, and in 2004 was named by ESPN as the best sports movie of the past 25 years. (It also garnered an Oscar nomination for Hopper.) You can read Roger Ebert 's four-star review of "Hoosiers" at www.rogerebert.com.
