March 31 (Wed.)
Tonight is a special evening for 17 of IUSD's graduating students, who are being

in the fields of dental hygiene and dentistry. A banquet at University Place Hotel
welcomes NEW ALUMNI MEMBERS OF SIGMA PHI ALPHA AND OMICRON KAPPA UPSILON. By invitation.

th
Edition of Renowned Text Introduced in 2004 . On this day 58 years ago, Indiana
University hired Dr. Ralph McDonald as an instructor in what was then known
as pedodontia. Dr. McDonald swiftly rose through the ranks both at IU, where he
served as head of children's dentistry and then as dean of the dental school; and
on the national front, where he became a well-respected leader in pediatric dentistry
as well as editor, in 1969, of a first-edition textbook titled
Dentistry for the
Child and Adolescent.
Through the years, Dentistry for the Child and Adolescent became one of the
best known dental textbooks in the country. For the 3rd edition, in 1978, Dr. McDonald
invited a young colleague, Dr. David Avery , who is now the Ralph E. McDonald
Professor of Pediatric Dentistry, to join him as a co-editor.
In 1985, Dr. McDonald retired from his distinguished career at IU but not from his
position as a leading authority in children's dentistry. He and Dr. Avery continued
to produce their text, and with publication of the 7th edition in 2000
the book surpassed all other pediatric dentistry texts in the nation in number of
editions. Some editors might have been tempted to rest on their laurels at that
point, but instead Drs. McDonald and Avery invited Dr. Jeffrey Dean , associate
professor of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics and chair of the Department of
Oral Facial Development, to join them on production of the 8th edition,
which has recently come off the presses.
Published throughout its existence by Mosby, the new 769-page edition is composed
of 30 chapters written by 37 dental and medical educators, practitioners, researchers,
and hospital administrators from around the U.S. and Canada, including many current
and former IU faculty members and alumni of IUSD's graduate programs. The text is
designed for both predoctoral students and pediatric dentistry residents and as
a reference book for dentists.
The highly regarded Dentistry for the Child and Adolescent has been a 35-year
source of pride for Indiana University and the dental school's faculty, students,
staff, and alumni. We wish Drs. McDonald, Avery, and Dean great success with their
2004 edition.

We hope second-year dental hygiene student Erika Cole has rested up from
the banquet she attended on Wednesday as a new alumni member of Sigma Phi Alpha,
because she's being honored yet again this evening as one of IUPUI's "Top 100" undergraduate
students during a banquet and ceremony at the Westin Hotel. The TOP 100 STUDENT
RECOGNITION DINNER honors the campus's top junior and senior students for excellence
in academic performance, involvement in campus life, and service to the community.
Among those who will be in attendance to help honor Erika tonight are Nancy Young ,
associate professor and director of dental hygiene; and Elizabeth Hughes ,
clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene. The whole school is proud of you,
Erika. Enjoy your much-deserved celebration!

the chair of the oral facial development department; and Elizabeth ("Beth") Wyeth ,

PROF. HUGHES' NEW APPOINTMENT PUTS IUSD IN THE ADEA LEADERSHIP. A hearty congratulations
goes to Elizabeth Hughes , clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene,
who was elected secretary of the American Dental Education Association's Section
on Dental Hygiene Education during ADEA's annual session in Seattle, Wash., in March.
In accepting this leadership position, Prof. Hughes has made a three-year commitment
that will include a year as chair-elect in 2005 followed by service in the top position
as section chair in 2006.
DR. GARETTO ADDS A NEW FACET TO HIS CAREER. Many of our students will become members
of the "Class of 2004" in May -- and so will faculty member Dr. Lawrence Garetto ,
although instead of a diploma he's being handed a unique opportunity to share his
visions of student learning with some of the finest teachers in the IU system. Dr.
Garetto, director of teacher training and development and an associate professor
of orthodontics, recently learned that he's one of 17 IU educators to be chosen
this year for membership in FACET, the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching,
a Presidential Initiative of the university. The selection committee, composed of
faculty from all IU campuses, chose the members of the FACET Class of 2004 in recognition
of their "special distinction in teaching" and "demonstrated commitment to student
learning."
Dr. Garetto will be among the class members honored at the annual FACET retreat,
to be held May 21-23 at the Fourwinds Resort & Marina near Bloomington. At this
conference, he'll not only meet the FACET alumni but also participate in seminars
and workshops and enter into dialogues with colleagues from a range of disciplines
across the university. As an ongoing member of the group, Dr. Garetto will promote
excellence in teaching and learning through such avenues as the FACET-directed IU
Faculty Leadership Institute, Associate Faculty Conference, and Future Faculty Teaching
Fellows Institute. He will also help give shape and substance to future FACET programs.
