People, Places, and Things
CHAIRSIDE ASSISTANT EXTRAORDINAIRE. "As a chairside
assistant, she is amongst the best that I have worked with," says an
appreciative faculty member in the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental
Programs. "She maintains a very friendly attitude with patients that puts them
at ease as well as allows the operator to perform treatment very efficiently."
Diana Yates'
excellent rapport--not only with dentists and patients in the patient-care
setting but also with everyone else who works or studies at IUSD--is one of many
reasons she's been chosen as the latest recipient of the IUSD Staff
Council's Staff Excellence Award. Diana was hired by the dental school in 1974
after she earned her IU dental assisting certificate, and today she serves as
the clinic coordinator in the periodontics division of her department. "She is
an extremely caring person and is always concerned about the welfare of all
those around her," says a nominator.
Like a lot of other winners of the Staff Excellence Award,
Diana realizes that dedication to one's job often translates into long hours.
Ordering supplies and stocking the periodontics division must often take place
after 5 p.m., an important task that Diana never leaves undone. "Willingly
stays behind" is a recurring theme in her praise from others--an invaluable
trait in a department where surgical procedures can sometimes extend well beyond
their appointment times.
Diana's contemporary colleagues hold her in high esteem
and recognize her extraordinary work ethic, as did her colleagues of the past.
Early in Diana's career, the internationally respected Dr. Timothy O'Leary, then chair of IU's Department of Periodontics--and
one of the most exacting clinicians and researchers the dental community has
ever known--was impressed enough with Diana's work to take her to Europe to
assist him with a research study he was conducting in Scandinavia.
(I can't resist adding a personal note for Diana, who
started her IUSD career on May 28, 1974, the same day and year as I started
mine: You're a most-deserving candidate for this award, Diana. IUSD can count
itself fortunate to have had a professional of your caliber in its services for
nearly three decades so far. Congratulations to a terrific person and excellent
employee!--Sue Crum)
RESEARCH DAY HONORS. Congratulations to the two faculty
members, two staff members, 18 students, and one postdoctoral research fellow
who were honored at an awards ceremony held during IUSD's 10th annual Research
Day on April 1.
Dr. Eric Everett, assistant
professor of oral facial genetics (School of Dentistry) and dermatology (School
of Medicine), received the IUSD Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty
Award for Research. He is the principal investigator on a grant funded by
the National Institutes of Health and a coinvestigator on others. He is the
author or coauthor of two dozen research articles and 37 abstracts, and he
presents invited lectures on research topics related to genetics. Active in the
international research community, Dr. Everett has served during the past year as
president of the Society of Craniofacial Genetics. He directs the school's
Mineralized Tissue and Histology Research Laboratory, which is located in the
Department of Oral Facial Development. In addition to directing two modules in
the predoctoral curriculum, Dr. Everett serves as a research mentor for several
graduate and undergraduate students. He has been a member of the IUSD faculty
since 1996.
Dr. Edwin Parks,
associate professor of dental diagnostic sciences, received the IUSD Alumni
Association Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. Dr. Parks serves as
course director for three graduate courses, and he is a PBL tutor and director
of four modules in the predoctoral curriculum. He also directs the school's
Patient Screening Clinic and chairs the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Parks
complements his very full teaching schedule with activities in professional
organizations, and he is frequently invited to give talks to various
professional groups. He receives excellent student evaluations, and has been
cited for making a special effort to present the most up-to-date information in
his courses using current teaching technologies. Dr. Parks served for a couple
of years on the IU faculty after completing IU's degree program in dental
diagnostic sciences in 1994. He returned to IU as a full-time teacher in 1997.
Two staff members received the John O. Butler
Company's Staff Awards for Research Excellence:
