in the yard southwest of the dental school. Dean Goldblatt invites all students,
staff, and faculty to participate with him in this photo tradition. As usual,
Rocky Rothrock of IU’s Medical Illustrations department is arranging for a
med school photographer to shoot from a position on the dental school’s roof to
make sure he can fit all of us into the picture frame. Let’s hope the weather’s
not as sweltering as last year! (Although we’re still a terrific-looking bunch
of people, even when a little sweaty around the edges.) You’re going to be
facing the sky, so don’t forget your sunglasses. The photo shoot takes just a
few minutes — please join us if your schedule permits. (Rain date is tomorrow.)

FACULTY AND STAFF CONFERENCES. Staff meet at the dental school and faculty at
the Montage at 8580 Allison Pointe Blvd. Staff registration is closed. Faculty
should register online inside the Intranet, even if they are unable
to attend.
The IUSD Faculty Council will meet from 11 a.m. to noon at the Montage.
As you have seen in previous mailings from Elizabeth Hatcher, director
of Staff Development and Support, and Lorinda Coan, clinical assistant
professor of dental hygiene, both staff and faculty conference organizing
committees have worked hard this year to pull together stimulating programs that
will be both educational and fun.
Staff members, don’t forget that you’re invited to complement your conference
theme of "Memorable Moments in IUSD History" by wearing something that
represents a memorable moment in your own personal history. What article of
clothing holds special memories for you? A high school or college football
jersey? Commencement cap and gown? Homecoming crown? Steady-Sweater?
Angora-encased class ring? Prom tux? Maternity top? "I Love Grandma" tee shirt?
Wear – and share – your special memories today.
No classes or clinics this Friday except for the DDS Class of 2010, which is
taking a biweekly exam from 8 a.m. till noon in DS114 and DS115.
6-15 (Fri.-Sun.)
The IU School of Dentistry will once again be represented during BI-NATIONAL
HEALTH WEEK, a collaborative effort of many governmental agencies, community
organizations, and universities in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. This event is
part of a larger program of cooperation between North and Central America "to
improve the health of Latino immigrants who live and work in the United States
and Canada." Guatemala and El Salvador are also participating this year.
Dr. Angeles Martinez Mier and Dr. Armando Soto, both assistant
professors of preventive and community dentistry, are serving on the organizing
committee for the regional program covering Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and
southern Illinois. Of the numerous activities taking place this week, Drs.
Martinez Mier and Soto have arranged four programs:
SEAL INDIANA mobile unit volunteers will provide dental screenings, sealants,
and education at a Health Fair at the Citizen’s Clinic, 1650 N. College, from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 7.
Alumni of the Calnali, Mexico, Alternative Spring Break program will discuss
Service-Learning Experience in Mexico: The Dental Student Perspective at the IU
School of Dentistry, room DS S116, on Fri., Oct. 13, from noon to 1 p.m.
Two presentations are offered by guest speaker Gustavo Martinez Mier,
MD:
Wed., Oct. 11, 8-9 a.m., Ruth Lilly Auditorium, Riley Outpatient
Center: Transplant Tourism — How to Negotiate a Smooth Trip on Both Sides of the
Border
On Thurs., Oct. 12, Dr. Martinez Mier will discuss Surgery in Hispanic
Patients as one of the speakers at an all-day conference at Columbus (Ind.)
Regional Hospital, 2400 E. 17th St.
Dr. Gustavo Martinez Mier is a transplant surgeon in the Organ
Transplantation service at the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Veracruz,
Mexico; chief of the Organ Transplantation service at Veracruz General Hospital;
assistant professor of surgery at the University of Veracruz School of Medicine;
and chief of research at the newly founded Universidad Cristobal Colon School of
Medicine. (He also happens to be Angeles’ brother.)
All of the programs and activities associated with Bi-National Health Week
are free, open to the public, and require no pre-registration. Click here to see
a list of all the activities.

The Niña, the Pinta, the, uh, Mariagalante? In observation of COLUMBUS
DAY, you might want to check out an online IU Research report that describes
efforts by a team of IU archaeologists that believes it is getting close to
discovering some of Christopher Columbus’ lost ships, including perhaps the
Mariagalante, which was the flagship on his second journey to the New World.
Faculty and graduate students have been undertaking yearly explorations in the
Dominican Republic for a decade, and they recently found a 300-pound anchor that
could date to Columbus. For the story and images, go to
http://www.research.iu.edu/news/stories/0076_columbus.html.

Interest Group hosts a forum with speakers from the Mexican community of Central
Indiana and IUPUI who share an interest in Mexico. The group will discuss the
challenges and benefits of a core strategic partnership, and its primary aim is
to produce a document that will define the parameters of a partnership with
Mexico that is based upon campus and community input. The session is open to all
faculty, staff, and students. For questions, contact Hilary Kahn,
hkahn@iupui.edu or 274-3812. To learn more about this proposal, go to

RESEARCH COMMITTEE, 9 a.m. in DS S421
A New Twist on a Terrific Fundraiser — We Get to Be Pretty (and Handsome) in
Pink Without Ditching the Denim! Debra Lanning, longtime coordinator of the
dental school’s involvement in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s
fall fundraiser, tells us that this year we should be prepared to go
PASSIONATELY PINK FOR THE CURE™. Although this event replaces Lee National Denim
Day, you can still wear jeans if you donate a minimum of $5 to the cause. And be
sure to wear pink! (Does anyone among us have some ultra-cool pink jeans?) If
you don’t have lots of pink to choose from in your wardrobe, think pink
fingernails, pink lipstick, or even just a pink Komen ribbon pin if you’re
feeling low key. Contact Debra if you’re ready to give a donation or if you’d
like to help her collect: dlanning@iupui.edu. Debra does a great job with this
event every year – let’s give her all the support we can.

"At 10 a.m. on Oct. 20, 1987, I was treating a patient in the Department of
Prosthodontics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Suddenly my
patient, who was listening to a small portable radio, looked quite concerned. I
stopped my work to ask him what was wrong. He said a plane had just crashed into
the Indianapolis Airport Ramada Inn. The hotel was on fire and there were
casualties. So began my first experience in forensic dentistry."
Those words are the opening to a prize-winning paper David All, then a
fourth-year dental student, wrote about the contributions he made to the IU
dental school’s forensic involvement in the aftermath of a crash of a small U.S.
Air Force jet into the Ramada. While en route from Pennsylvania to Nevada, the
pilot lost power south of Indy and then ejected after an attempt at a
"dead-stick" landing at the airport failed. The plane slammed into the Ramada
after hitting a bank’s roof. Ten people in the hotel died in the disaster, and
the hotel was permanently closed.
When the call came in to the dental school asking for forensic services,
three faculty members responded: two who are now retired and Dr. Cecil Brown,
now acting chair of the Department of Endodontics. David All was allowed to
assist the faculty because he had taken the school’s intramural course on
forensic dentistry. The dental team worked with IU medical school pathologists
and personnel from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s office.
Together, they identified the four victims who had been badly burned. Describing
it in his paper as an "unforgettable experience," David won the Block Drug
Company’s Fourth-Year Essay Award at his graduation in 1988. Today, Dr. All
resides in Deland, Fla.
21 (Sat.)
IUSD students are hosting DENTAL DAY for individuals who are interested in a

career opportunities in the health professions. The program includes
presentations and panel discussions led by faculty, students, and practicing
dental professionals. Registration for this event is now closed.

People, Places, and Things
CARL DRAKE IS ASDA’S DELEGATE OF THE YEAR. Congratulations to one of our own:
Fourth-year dental student Carl Drake has been named national Delegate of
the Year by the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), the student
equivalent of the American Dental Association. He accepted the honor during the
organization’s recent annual session in Baltimore. As president of ASDA’s
Indiana chapter, Carl serves on the Indiana Dental Association’s Board of
Trustees as well as its Council on the New Dentist and Council on Dental
Education and Practice.
"My award is a reflection of what our entire chapter has done," says Carl,
who orchestrated a drive that boosted ASDA membership in Indiana by 50 percent.
Part of the Indiana chapter’s strategy was to reach out to members of the dental
class of 2010 before they even arrived on campus. "We held a scrubs fundraiser
with this class, and helped the incoming students open online Facebook
accounts," says Carl.
The Indiana chapter has recently initiated a Speakers Series for its members
and is currently working with the dental school administration to reexamine
school attendance policies primarily to make it possible for students to use
excused absences to engage in professional development activities. Last year,
Carl and other ASDA representatives wrote letters to the state governor and
attorney general in a campaign that helped bring about the Indiana State Board’s
recent changes to dental licensing laws in Indiana. All regional licensing exams
are now recognized, and Indiana’s licensing exam has been discontinued.
For these and other accomplishments, IU was also honored in Baltimore as
ASDA’s Most Improved Chapter.
"I have personally gained so much from ASDA," says Carl. "I think the major
reason we have been recognized by ASDA on the national level is because our main
goal has been to make sure all local dental students are aware of the
association and its benefits. We have encouraged everyone to participate, and we
have found specific ways to get students involved."
FROM TEST REVIEW TO TEST CONSTRUCTION. After completing her term on the
National Boards Test Review Committee this month, Dr. Margot Van Dis,
professor of dental diagnostic sciences, has now been asked to serve on the Test
Construction Committee for Part II Component B as the representative for Oral
and Maxillofacial Radiology. Dr. Van Dis is certified by the American Board of
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and the American Board of Oral Medicine. She
served a five-year term on the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology, and was the board’s president in 1997. Dr. Van Dis has also
co-written textbooks in the specialty.
DRS. M. KOWOLIK, MAUPOMÉ IN THE PAGES OF THE STAR. Dr. Michael
Kowolik, professor of periodontics, and Dr. Gerardo Maupomé,
professor of preventive and community dentistry, were recently interviewed for
the lead story in the Healthy Living section of the Indianapolis Star
titled "Brush Up on Good Health." The article discusses periodontal disease and
its possible relationship to heart disease, diabetes, and other illnesses. To
read the article by Star health and medical writer Shari Rudavsky,

In the same Star issue, IUSD alumnus Charles Poland (DDS’68) is
the featured dentist in Rudavsky’s Q&A column titled "Taking Care of Child’s
Teeth Should Begin Early in Life":

RESEARCH GROUPS FOR IUSD STUDENTS. Newly elected officers of the 2006-2007
IUSD Student Research Group, an organization for predoctoral dental students,
are: Brooke Shank, third-year, president; Bart Hott, third-year,
vice-president; and Ryan Pulfer, third-year, secretary-treasurer.
According to Dr. Richard Gregory, director of the PhD and Student
Research programs, this year’s group is planning an exciting year of research
interactions, and members will be meeting on a regular basis to talk about their
projects through the biweekly Student Research Presentation Program. If you’d
like to know more about the SRG, contact Dr. Gregory or one of the officers.
The IUSD Graduate Student Council is also revved up for the new school year.
The 14 representatives, two from each area of study, are Diana Kozlowski
and Amy Westerman, Pediatric Dentistry; Zhiyun (Cloud) Chen and
Rodrigo Viecilli, PhD program in Dental Science); Eva-Marie Powers
and Kazuhiko Tsuchiya, Prosthodontics; Karim Elkholy and Sarah
Herd, Periodontics; Theodoros Aneziris and Mindy Van,
Endodontics; Richard Adcook and Panida Bulpakdi, Operative
Dentistry; and Steven Gajda and Rebecca Ortenzio, Orthodontics.
Dr. Kozlowski represents the council on the IUPUI Graduate Student Organization,
and Drs. Powers and Elkholy are alternates.
A FACULTY FELLOW AND A JADA COVER STORY. Dr. Dominique Galli,
associate professor of oral biology, has received a two-year, half-time
appointment from IUPUI as a Faculty Fellow in the Office of Academic Affairs.
And in September, an article by two other IUSD faculty landed in a prestigious
and high-profile position as the cover-story feature for the Journal of the
American Dental Association: Dr. Margherita Fontana, associate
professor of preventive and community dentistry; and Dr. Domenick Zero,
associate dean for Research and OHRI director. If you missed either one of these
announcements as published in Inside IUPUI, go to

(Dr. Galli) and

(Drs. Fontana and Zero).
LET’S USE IT (SO WE DON’T LOSE IT). Thanks to a three-year federally funded
program, students, staff, and faculty on this campus now have free access to
IndyGo’s new bus route linking IUPUI to downtown Indianapolis. Read all about
it, then hitch a ride on the Red Line Circulator to eat, shop, or wander about
in the heart of the city:
