ANNUAL IUSD GROUP PHOTO with Dean Lawrence Goldblatt, 12:15 p.m. in
the yard southwest of the dental school. Dean Goldblatt invites all students,
staff, and faculty to participate with him in this photo tradition, now in its
14th year. As usual, the med school’s illustrations department is
sending over its team of photographers to take our picture, which will be
displayed in the hallway across from Elevator C throughout the year. It’s a good
idea to bring your sunglasses, and grab a sweater if there’s a chill in the air.
The photo shoot takes just a few minutes — please join us if your schedule
permits. (Rain date is Oct. 17, same time and location.)
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announces the first of its 2005 NOBEL

Representatives of the IUSD Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry
and the Indiana Hispanic Dental Association (IHDA) are helping to make the fifth
annual BINATIONAL HEALTH WEEK, a collaborative effort between Mexico and the
U.S., a big success. The Mexican ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs and
the Institute of Mexicans Abroad have joined forces with many U.S. state and
federal agencies and universities with a goal of providing “health-related
interventions and health promotion activities, on a yearly basis, to low-income,
uninsured, and underserved Latin/Hispanic and Mexican populations.” The IU
School of Dentistry is pleased to be participating as an official sponsor.
The state of Indiana kicks off its weeklong activities with a breakfast and
program hosted by the Indianapolis Urban League on Oct. 8. Dr. Angeles
Martinez-Mier, assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry,
and Dr. Sarah Stelzner of the IU medical school are coordinating
Indiana’s scientific program, while the IHDA, currently headed by Dr.
Milagros Toro-Arrivillaga, a postdoctoral fellow at the Oral Health Research
Institute, is overseeing IUSD volunteers for several clinical and educational
events scheduled this week at a variety of churches and other community sites.
Among the scientific presentations is a noontime talk here at the school on
Tuesday, Oct. 11, by Dr. Daniel Gomes, clinical assistant professor of
periodontics, titled “Comparing the Oral Health of Hispanic Migrant and Rural
Populations in Mexico” (room DS S116).
On Thursday, Oct. 13, Dr. Martinez-Mier joins Dr. Stelzner, Dr. Mary Riner
of the IU nursing school, and Dr. Laura Cornejo of Universidad
Automoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH) in a presentation titled “Service,
Research, and Education: The IU/UAEH Model,” which is based in part on IU’s
annual International Service-Learning Program in the Mexican city of Hidalgo.
Their talk is from noon to 1 p.m. in the Petticrew Auditorium at Methodist
Hospital.
Dr. Martinez-Mier and her colleagues will also present this topic at the
opening ceremonies of Binational Health Week in Chicago, where First Lady
Laura Bush and Mexico’s President Vicente Fox will be among the
dignitaries in attendance. The educators’ contributions as panelists in Chicago
will be as members of a health policy forum titled “Transnational Health of
Mexican Immigrants in North America.”
All Binational Health Week presentations are free and open to the public,
including IUSD’s faculty, staff, and students.
This program represents an exciting opportunity for IUSD to further build
upon its community connections. We are proud of our multi-talented faculty and
other IUSD volunteers who are helping to give shape and substance to this
important collaboration with Mexico.

AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PROSTHODONTISTS annual session, Los Angeles
27 (Thurs.)
Nanette Fabray, actress, comedienne, and longtime advocate for the
hearing impaired, turns 85 today. In the late 1970s, while she was starring as
“Grandma Romano” on the hit TV series “One Day at a Time” (and a few years
before she would star on the mega-hit “Coach” as Hayden Fox’s mother-in-law),
Miss Fabray startled an IU School of Dentistry employee by suddenly appearing in
the reception window in what used to be the school’s Complete Denture department
(now the reception room for the Dental Hygiene clinic). Miss Fabray wasn’t
checking in to see about a denture appointment — her teeth, and smile, were as
lovely as her personality. She had arrived on the dental school’s fourth floor
at the recommendation of her friend and doctor, famous Los Angeles ear
specialist Dr. Howard House, who wanted the actress to see IU’s M.M.
House Memorial Museum honoring the work of Howard’s father, Milus House,
a 1903 graduate of the Indiana Dental College. Milus was a brilliant inventor of
articulators, casting machines, and tooth molds, and also the father of Dr.
James House, former chair of IU’s Complete Denture department. Much of Miss
Fabray’s adult life was complicated by hearing problems, until a series of
surgeries restored her hearing. Milus House died in 1959, and Howard House,
whose patients also included Howard Hughes, Bob Hope, and former
President Ronald Reagan, died in 2003.

NIH GRANT AWARDED TO DR. JACKSON. Dr. Richard Jackson, assistant
professor of preventive and community dentistry, is the principal investigator
on a research project recently funded by the National Institute of Health’s
National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Titled “Health Literacy
in an Ethnically Mixed Panel of Mothers of Toddlers,” the one-year project got
under way on Sept. 1 with funding of $75,750.
The project gives the Oral Health Research Institute an opportunity to expand
upon data currently being collected and analyzed in another of its NIH-funded
studies, a caries-risk study of mothers and toddlers that is about at the
half-day point and headed by Dr. Margherita Fontana, associate professor
of preventive and community dentistry. Dr. Fontana also serves as Dr. Jackson’s
co-investigator on the new project.
Researchers in the first study are using a novel health-perception
questionnaire to query the mothers on a wide variety of subjects, such as diet,
culture, socio-economics, and health beliefs and perceptions that may affect
transmission and development of caries as well as general-dental health and
access to care in populations at highest risk for developing early childhood
caries. Of particular interest are African American and Hispanic populations,
which the 2000 U.S. Surgeon General’s report on oral health determined to be
among the country’s high-risk groups.
Using the new grant, Dr. Jackson’s team will query the same group of mothers
on yet another factor that may play a role in the development of early childhood
caries: health literacy. They will administer the Simple Test for Functional
Health Literacy in Adults, a questionnaire that is well recognized among the
research community as a valid means of measuring one’s knowledge of health
matters. Dr. Jackson’s group will correlate data from both studies, with a
long-term goal of using the information to develop appropriate materials or
provide appropriate chairside assistance that can more effectively reach
children who are at highest risk for developing early childhood caries.
SOUTH BEND TRIB TURNS TO IUSD. When the South Bend Tribune wanted
to alert its readers to the warning signs of oral cancer, the newspaper sought
the advice of Dr. Susan Zunt, chair of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and
Radiology. The information Dr. Zunt provided ran alongside a Sept. 28 article by
reporter Howard Dukes, who is writing a series of articles about his own
personal battle with the disease. To read Dukes’ account, enter 9-28-05 at the
bottom of the page at http://www.southbendtribune.com. (You can also access the
first article in the series by entering 9-25-05.)
THEY’VE GOT THIS ASSIGNMENT COVER-ED. Of the six persons joining IUPUI
Chancellor Charles Bantz in the photo gracing the cover of the latest
issue of IUPUI Magazine, an alumni publication, two are from the School
of Dentistry faculty: Dr. Angeles Martinez-Mier and Dr. R. Dale Lentz,
an IUSD alumnus who volunteers his services as a part-time clinical assistant
professor of oral surgery. The photo illustrated the issue’s theme, “Building a
Great Urban University,” which required each of the participants to wear
construction workers’ hard hats and tote tools of the trade (Angeles holds a
builder’s level and Dale, an oversized wrench).
IUSD CONFERENCE AWARDS. Congratulations to the faculty and staff members who
were honored during the dental school’s September conferences:
Dr. Steven Blanchard, assistant professor of periodontics and director
of graduate periodontics, received the Indiana Dental Association’s
Outstanding Teacher of the Year award for academic year 2004-2005. The
recognition, which comes only three years after Dr. Blanchard joined the IU
faculty, is due to the excellent evaluations he receives from his students and
an extensive teaching schedule that includes lecture, seminar, lab, and clinical
courses for dental, graduate dental, and dental hygiene students. Dr. Blanchard
is a dental graduate of the University of Michigan and an alum of two U.S. Air
Force residencies: one in general practice at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois
and one in periodontics at Lackland AFB in Texas. He also earned a master’s
degree in periodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San
Antonio. Before coming to IU, he was a periodontal training officer in the
Advanced Education in General Dentistry programs at Langley AFB, Va., and
Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C. He is a diplomate of the American Board of
Periodontology.
Dr. Judith Chin, assistant professor of preventive and community
dentistry, received the 2005 Faculty Community Service award for her
extraordinary commitment to populations in need within the community, both as a
volunteer practitioner and as a service-learning mentor for IUSD’s students. Dr.
Chin has taken on substantial roles in most of the dental school’s ongoing
outreach programs, including her service at the Amish Dental Clinic in northern
Indiana, the American Dental Association’s annual Give Kids a Smile event based
in part at IUSD, and the Shelter Sealant and SEAL INDIANA programs. As Central
Indiana liaison and a key media spokesperson for the Indiana Dental
Association’s Give Kids a Smile, Dr. Chin has made many television appearances
to boost community awareness of this program. She also volunteers with Habitat
for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis.
Maria Ramones, clinical services representative at Cottage Corner Dental
Clinic, received the Staff Council’s fourth-quarter Staff Excellence
award one month before celebrating her fifth anniversary at IUSD. Maria is
valued by her co-workers for a wide range of reasons that include her
outstanding rapport with faculty, staff, students, and patients; the leadership
skills she demonstrates in helping to keep an “ever-changing” clinic running
smoothly; and her ability to multi-task “like she’s got 10 arms.” Maria provides
invaluable assistance as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients not just
at Cottage Corner but also at other IUSD locations and clinics beyond the dental
school. “People will call our clinic and ask to speak with Maria because she
always shows a friendly, helpful, caring attitude,” says an award nominator.
Maria is working on a degree in accounting at the Indiana Business College, and
in her free time she helps raise funds for schools by volunteering at Colts
games and other events.
Julie LeHunt, administrative support specialist for Oral Pathology,
Medicine, and Radiology, received the 2005 Staff Community Service award
for her longtime dedication as a volunteer for Hemophilia of Indiana, Inc.,
which is affiliated with the National Hemophilia Foundation and the Hemophilia
Federation of America. At the IU dental school, Julie’s highly successful
poinsettia fundraising sales for Hemophilia of Indiana are as synonymous with
the holiday season each year as bells that jingle and trees that light up. She
currently holds a position on the organization’s board of directors. Does Julie
plan to hit the malls with her Community Service award money? No. With an eye on
those who have suffered through Katrina, she’s donating the funds to the
Hemophilia Federation of America, which is based in hurricane-traumatized
Louisiana. Cool move, Jules.
ADDRESSING THE LEGISLATURE. Dr. Judith Chin and Dr. Domenick Zero,
associate dean for Research, accepted an invitation from the Indiana Dental
Association to address the Indiana Health Finance Commission, a study committee
of the Indiana Legislature, at the Indiana State House in September. The
commission is looking at the impact soft drinks have on child health. Dr. Zero
described the dental caries and tooth erosion that can result from soft drink
use, and Dr. Chin talked about patient care and the treatment “fallout” of soft
drink use in school-aged children.
SCOUTS’ HONOR. If you can name all the parts of a molar, describe where the
nerves and blood vessels enter the tooth, explain how to save a tooth that’s
been knocked out of a mouth, or discuss at length such topics as fluoride and
bacterial plaque, you’re probably a dental practitioner. Then again, you might
be a Boy Scout.
Dr. Ginat Mirowski, a part-time associate professor in Oral Pathology,
Medicine, and Radiology, and Dr. Jeffrey Dean, chair of Oral Facial
Development, recently hosted 15 Boy Scouts from Indianapolis Troop 56 at Riley
Hospital as the scouts completed some rigorous requirements for the Boy Scout
Merit Badge in Dentistry. You can read the sizable list of badge requirements at
http://www.meritbadge.com/mb/040.htm. As an extra reward for their hard work,
all the scouts went home with their own custom-fabricated mouth guards,
compliments of the Oral Facial Development staff.
WHO’S YOUR DADDY? What do musicians Doc Severinsen and the late
Miles Davis have in common besides their fame as ultra-smooth trumpet
players? Both grew up as the sons of dentists. Davis’ dad was Dr. Miles Dewey
Davis Jr., of East St. Louis, Mo., and Severinsen got his nickname “Little
Doc” because of the occupation of his dad, Dr. Carl Severinsen, of
Arlington, Ore. Legendary but short-lived Hoosier-born actor James Dean
was the son of Winton Dean, a dental technician in Marion.
