NDA AWARDS SCHOLARSHIP TO IUSD GRAD STUDENT. Congratulations to Dr.
Jennifer Barnes, a second-year graduate student in operative dentistry, who
has been awarded the Dr. Bessie Elizabeth Delaney Award from the foundation of
the National Dental Association (NDA), the largest and oldest organization for
minority oral health professionals in the U.S. The $10,000 scholarship,
supported by the NDA and Colgate-Palmolive, was presented to Dr. Barnes during
the NDA's national conference in Dallas, Texas, in July. The Delaney award,
which specifically recognizes a female graduate degree candidate, was one of
three $10,000 scholarships the NDA presented at the meeting. Before arriving at
IU for graduate studies, Dr. Barnes earned her dental degree from Meharry
Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. The woman for whom the scholarship is named
was a dentist who lived to be 104 years old. A 1923 graduate of the Columbia
University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, Dr. Delaney became the second
African American woman to be licensed to practice dentistry in New York City.
3 STUDENT LEADERS REPRESENT IUSD AT NATIONAL ASDA MEETING. As officers of
IU's section of the American Student Dental Association, Garth Hatch,
Emily Eberhardt, and Jeremy Sorhus took part in ASDA's 32nd
annual session held in Portland, Ore., over the Labor Day holiday. ASDA leaders
from across the nation met to discuss and vote on resolutions, elect a new
executive committee, and attend educational sessions. The main topics of this
year's session, Emily reports, were diversity, dental licensure, and executive
committee restructuring. Indiana's students also helped elect a new Region 7
trustee, Jon Nickelsen, who is in his final year of studies at the
University of Illinois at Chicago. Participants "enjoyed the beautiful scenery
of the Pacific Northwest as well as a boat ride along the Columbia River on the
‘Spirit of Portland' " says Emily. "Next year's annual session promises to be
just as eventful and will take place in Philadelphia."
ASDA's officers and representatives for the 2002-2003 school year are:
Garth Hatch, 4th year, President and lst Delegate
Emily Eberhardt, 4th year, Vice President and 2nd
Delegate
Jeremy Sorhus, 3rd year, Secretary and Alternate Delegate
Joshua Souweine, 3rd year, Treasurer
Tyson Smith, lst year, Legislative Liaison

FACULTY AND STAFF AWARDS. Several awards bestowed in September paid tribute
to the achievements of 3 faculty members and a member of the staff.
The Indiana Dental Association's annual faculty awards and an IUSD award
recognizing community service were presented during the Faculty Conference.
Dr. B. Keith Moore, professor of dental materials, received the IDA's
Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for excellence in teaching during the
2001-2002 academic year. Dr. Moore began his career on the IU faculty in 1977,
joining the school's famous team of researchers in materials science led by Dr.
Ralph Phillips. After earning a Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from
the University of Illinois, Urbana, he taught biological materials for several
years at Northwestern University before coming to IU.
Dr. Moore currently lectures or presents seminars for 13 courses and directs
4 courses as well as a module. He also is involved with all aspects of the PBL
program. His job as graduate program director in Dental Materials demands much
of his time as well--in the past year, he served on 28 graduate student research
committees and chaired 2 of them.
Dr. Moore has written or co-written hundreds of research articles and
abstracts, and he carried on as coeditor of the 5th edition of Dr.
Ralph Phillips' text, Elements of Dental Materials: For Dental Hygienists and
Dental Assistants, after Dr. Phillips' death.
IUSD isn't the only institution that has benefited from Dr. Moore's talents
as a teacher. He is an adjunct professor at Loma Linda University in California
and a former visiting professor and an ongoing consultant at Nihon University in
Tokyo, Japan.
The IDA's Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award went to Dr. Joseph Legan,
clinical associate professor of endodontics, for his continuous record of
quality teaching, scholarly activity, and service. Dr. Legan joined the IU
faculty in 1990 after retiring from the U.S. Air Force. He is a dental graduate
of Western (now Case Western) Reserve University, and he received his master's
degree in endodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at
Houston.
Dr. Legan is a diplomate of the American Association of Endodontists and a
past president of the Indiana Association of Endodontists.
He manages a heavy academic load at IU, teaching in 19 courses and directing
10 courses in the predoctoral, graduate, dental hygiene, and dental assisting
programs. He also serves as a student adviser and as a member of graduate
student research committees. Dr. Legan's teaching skills have not escaped the
notice of IU's dental students--he's been recognized as the favorite full-time
faculty member by the DDS classes of 1999, 2000, and 2001. He also holds two
teaching awards sponsored by IUPUI, and he was the 2001 recipient of the IUSD
Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching.
Dr. Don-John Summerlin, associate professor of oral pathology,
received the school's second annual Faculty Community Service Award. A faculty
member here since 1988, Dr. Summerlin has an extensive record of community
service. He has used his expertise in the field of oral and maxillofacial
pathology to educate and inform the citizens of Central Indiana about oral
cancer and cancer prevention. As the longtime director of the oral cancer
screening clinic at the Little Red Door Cancer Agency, he also plays an
invaluable role in cancer detection. The agency is a non-profit organization
serving those in need within Central Indiana. In 1999, the Mayor of Indianapolis
presented Dr. Summerlin with the Mayor's Volunteer Partnership Award.
Dr. Summerlin's efforts received high praise in a recent letter to the school
from Angela Holliday, who oversees all of the agency's screening and
detection programs. She said in part: "To name just a few of the ‘extra' things
he does to care for his community: Dr. Summerlin has been known to make special
arrangements with our clients for further evaluation and care, make house calls,
give up his much-valued Saturdays, provide education and instruction, make phone
calls to be sure clients follow up with care, and provide additional resources
or ‘places for people to turn to' when all avenues have been exhausted. Without
Dr. Summerlin's devotion to this agency, his community, and the clients he
serves, the program would not be the success it is today."
At the Staff Conference, the latest Staff Excellence Award from the Staff
Council was presented to Sharon Gwinn, the infection control coordinator
at the Oral Health Research Institute and a member of the OHRI team for 27
years. In the words of a nominator, Sharon "has contributed a great deal to the
advancement of knowledge relating to the field of infection control and to the
overall success of our Institute."
As the behind-the-scenes coordinator of all the clinical and laboratory
studies, Sharon performs a thorough assessment of each study's needs, often
working 50 to 60 hours a week. She has organized and streamlined the process to
enable the Institute to conduct virtually any type of study, including one in
Puerto Rico involving 2,500 schoolchildren, 10,000 dental examinations, and
radiographs over a 4-year period. "We basically could not conduct a study
without the expertise and assistance of Sharon and her infection control team,"
a nominator reports.
As one might imagine, Sharon also excels in communication skills. "Sharon's
ability to communicate infection control needs and logistics of a particular
project to the involved parties is excellent," a letter reads. "One major
project was the early caries detection equipment and pilot studies. This
involved devising a system for infection control of the handpieces used and
determining how to conduct the exams off-site in complete darkness."
And finally, we'd like to mention Richard Kerkhof, the previous Staff
Excellence Award recipient whose candidate information didn't arrive in time for
the previous calendar.
An ability to keep calm--and to calm others--is one of Richard's strong
characteristics in his role as a dental laboratory technician in Restorative
Dentistry. Richard's workplace, lab SB05, is vividly remembered by many alumni
for its frenzied pace and an atmosphere often leaning toward the tumultuous.
Richard's composure and his low key, respectful manner go far in keeping life on
an even keel in one of the school's busiest places. Richard received a cluster
of recommendation letters, including one on behalf of the letter writer and 23
dental students. "He is kind, nice to all, courteous, and gentle with his
comments," the letter says in part.
Richard is referred to as an exceptional laboratory technician who takes
great honor and pride in his job, and who is adept at anticipating the needs of
everyone in the lab, especially the module directors. "He is so efficient in his
management of the pre-clinic lab that I have yet to receive any negative
feedback about Richard," reports another nominator.
Richard has enjoyed a long and successful history with IU. He was first hired
in 1980 as the laboratory director for the pediatric dentistry program at Riley
Hospital for Children. He moved into his current position at the dental school
in 1997.
NEW GRAD RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD. He's only been gone from IU for
a few months, but periodontic graduate Dr. Robert De Poi has already
captured the admiration of the national leadership in his specialty. At
September's meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in New
Orleans, Dr. De Poi received the AAP Foundation's Gerald Kramer Award, which
honors the nation's most outstanding third-year graduate student in periodontics.
Dr. De Poi and 2 other finalists were flown to the meeting, where they were
interviewed by the academy's awards committee. A resident of Melbourne,
Australia, Dr. De Poi took home the $10,000 award--and an extremely proud group
of periodontic faculty headed back to IU to share the terrific news. Dr. De Poi
earned his MSD degree in May 2002 after defending a thesis titled "In Vitro
Oxidative Response of Human Monocytes to Surface Modified Commercially Pure
Titanium."
